Abstract

This series of children’s literature focuses on discrimination among children based on their race, sex, disability, physical attractiveness, and social class. The goal is to find the ways children discriminate against their friends and also the ways they cope with discrimination. To do so, this creative thesis uses the concept of prejudice and discrimination and also the theory of Coping. From the series, it is shown that children can verbally, behaviorally, and relationally discriminate against their friends and that children can use problem-focused coping to cope with discrimination. Therefore, by understanding ways discrimination manifests itself and knowing how to cope with discrimination, children can detect discrimination and learn to cope with it.Keywords: Discrimination, Picture Books, Children’s literature, Realistic fiction

Abstract

Promotional blogs for [NEW] Bold MUKU Project were inspired by the current situation when Indonesian teenagers have no big interest in reading books because of the digital media. In 2011, a book-sharing movement, Bold MUKU Project, tried to track back Indonesian teenagers’ reading interest and yet did not work successfully due to the unspecific target market, the lack of planning, sources, and member structuring.  Therefore, the promotional blogs must be created based on the interest of the target audience and relevant concepts. The results of the surveys and the concepts of Internet consumer behavior and theory of copywriting by Rob Bowdery are considered to create promotional blogs for [NEW] Bold MUKU Project, that is, the main blog and an Instagram account. The main blog provides information and discussion among the community. The second promotional blog is Instagram as a place to attract viewers to open the main blog. In conclusion, in order to have successful promotional blogs, the contents of the promotional blogs must fit to the target audience’s interests and needs.
Hamilton: An American Founding Father—or an Other? Gabriela Lika Inga Moekoe; Dwi Setiawan

Abstract

Hamilton is a highly successful musical, both critically and commercially, which has been applauded for its revolutionary inclusivity: the musical famously casts people of color, despite its characters being based on historical, living people who were not of color, including the towering figures of America’s ‘founding fathers’. A group of critics, however—minor yet nonetheless vital voices—have denounced this as superficial diversity that perpetuates the erasure of people of color from history; as no main character is based on a historical person of color. While certain writers and reviewers have offered rebuttals, there is yet to be critical exposition that the character Hamilton himself, rather than a representation of the founding father, is instead a representation of what postcolonialists term ‘the other’; therefore making the work the opposite of an erasure of societally othered minority groups. As such, this paper examines, and later finds, that Hamilton’s Hamilton is indeed the epitome—and thus a prime representation, signaling undeniable presence—of the other in the text. Keywords: Musical Theater, American Literature, Postcolonialism, The Other, Immigrants.

Abstract

This paper tries to deal with the causes of Bella’s anxieties and the ways Bella overcomes them in The Twilight Saga: New Moon. To analyze the causes, I use two theories of anxiety; they are reality and neurotic anxiety. The two causes of Bella’s anxieties are insecure environment and traumatic experience. Bella uses four defense mechanisms to overcome her anxieties. They are denial, sublimation, acting out, and fixation. Bella denies her reality anxiety by denying her loneliness in the insecure environment. Besides, she uses acting out in order to release her reality anxiety and convert it to pleasure and satisfaction. Then she sublimates her anxiety into something useful, through studying. She is also fixating her anxiety to overcome both her reality and neurotic anxiety.

Abstract

During my internship at an apartment equivalent to a three-star hotel, I found that the receptionists, who were mostly graduates from vocational high schools in hospitality major, had difficulty in giving information to foreign guests in English appropriately. As a result, the receptionists made the guests dissatisfied and unable to give a satisfactory service. From this communication problem, I thought that a video guideline on giving information in English would be the best solution for the problem. A guideline in a video will help the receptionists easier to learn about the guideline because they can just easily watch the role plays and listen the conversation. This video guideline which contains the steps and procedures for asking and giving information about check ins, hotel facilities, and check outs in English will help the receptionists to handle foreign guests appropriately and help hotels to maintain their customers by giving satisfactory services to the guests.

Abstract

This study was conducted to find out the types of lexical errors that high and low proficiency learners produced in their writing, and find the differences and similarities from the production of the two groups. To answer the research questions, the writers used the theory by James (2013) about lexical error classification. This study was a qualitative study. The sources of the data of this study were the lexical errors from 32 writing drafts. The writers divided the students into two groups: eight students from high proficiency level and eight students from low proficiency level. The findings showed that the high proficiency learners produced five types of formal errors and four types of semantic errors, while the low proficiency learners produced two types of formal errors and six types of semantic errors. In conclusion, the high and the low proficiency learners’ lexical error productions are due to the learners’ lack of knowledge in sense relation and collocation, and the learners’ wrong terms of near-synonyms production. Keywords: lexical errors, high proficiency learners, low proficiency learners, error analysis
