Abstract

This study analyzed the issue of insecurity and self-acceptance portrayed in Samsung Galaxy A8 advertisement entitled “Lets You Be You”. The main theory for this study is the theory of multimodal discourse analysis by Paltridge (2012) and the theory of body language by Pease (2004) as the supporting theory. Qualitative approach is applied because this study involves the interpretation of both verbal and nonverbal data. The findings showed how the issue of insecurity is reflected through the reaction of the participants in the video before and after receiving a compliment. Furthermore, the construction of the changing process from insecurity to self-acceptance can be seen from the genuine reaction of the compliment, as well as the change of facial expression throughout the video. Key words: Insecurity, Self-acceptance, Multimodal Discourse Analysis, Advertisement, Samsung

Abstract

This thesis is a study of the choice of codes used by the announcers of DJ FM and SS FM radios in their advertisements, consisting of twenty advertisements from both radios. I applied some theories of codes from Wardaugh (2006), Stockwell (2002), and Holmes (2001) as my main theories. Also, I used the theory of Age and Linguistic choice from Coulmas (2005), and Marketing and Language Choice from Victor (2007) as my supporting theories. The subjects are two announcers of DJ FM and SS FM radios which are in the phase of young adulthood. Furthermore, I found that the announcers from both radio stations used Standard Indonesia as their main code. The conclusion is the target audience of DJ FM and SS FM did not influence the way the announcers chose their codes.

Abstract

Going through a divorce is a difficult time for a family, including the children. In this COVID-19 pandemic era, when the divorce rate in Indonesia soars high, I conducted a research to find out how it affects children or how children respond to it, especially when the decision to divorce is taken without their knowledge. To analyze it, I used theories from communication science. From the result of that research, I made a musical script which portrays my findings, in the hopes that readers or audiences can understand children’s perspective of divorce. The findings are the fact that it makes children become aloof and lowers their self-esteem. Even though they have a lot of questions and uncertainties towards the future, they will choose to become distant to avoid the topic of divorce. The reasons being they are afraid that talking about it will bring more drastic change. Other than that, they do not trust their parents as much anymore, since they think that the parents have lied to them. Keywords: divorce, children, communication, aloof, play-with-music, comedy

Abstract

In James Bond movies, there is a formula that becomes the characteristics of the movies. This formula is the pinnacle/basic story plot of the James Bond series. In all of the movies, there are always what so-called Bond’s girls. The Bond’s girls cannot be separated from the plot as they are one of the most famous features of the movies, besides the advance gadget. The Bond’s girls are the formula of the Bond series. They always appear to help James Bond during his duties. Although their roles are always helping James Bond, it often happens that James Bond saves them instead. This attract my attention in analyzing why, in James Bond series, women are represented in such a marginalized way despite their pivotal role. Through my analysis on the four latest James Bond series, I want to reveal the reason behind the marginalized representation of women in James Bond movies. In the analysis, by using theory of representation and encoding/decoding, I find out that they are being poorly, as well as intentionally and marginally represented. They are often sexually objectified. My findings show that the Bond’s girls are represented as dependent, semi strong/ignorant, sexual object, and weak/damsel. These traits are the reflection of how the society views women. Through that kind of representation, James Bond becomes the center of attention. He appears as a better hero because of the Bond’s girls, that is, he saves them all whenever they are in troubles.

Abstract

This study was conducted in order to find out the motivational strategies applied by an English teacher who was perceived successful in motivating students in learning English in a primary school in Surabaya. It was focused on the motivational strategies related to appropriate teacher behaviors and a good relationship with the students; a pleasant and supportive classroom atmosphere; and a cohesive learner group with appropriate group norms in the first grade of primary school. Using qualitative approach, this study is based on Dörnyei’s (2001) theory on motivational strategies. The data were collected from verbal and non-verbal interaction between the teacher and students in the classroom, in two meetings within two weeks. The duration of the class was 70 minutes for each meeting. The findings showed that the English teacher applied motivational strategies related to the first and second motivational components. Mostly, the teacher applied motivational strategies related to the first motivational component. However, the teacher did not apply any motivational strategies related to the third motivational component, since there was no activity related to making groups in the classroom. It can be said that by applying all those motivational strategies, the students could be motivated in learning English and be more active in following the lesson in the classroom

Abstract

This study was done to investigate how narratives on issues or topics of serious concern focusing on COVID-19 pandemic, dated back from April to December 2020, were constructed in the selected Instagram feeds and the existing patterns of regularities could be identified in the narratives. To answer these two research questions, the writer uses theories from Labov (1967, as cited in De Fina & Johnstone, 2015) about narrative construction as the theory. The subjects of this study were the Instagram feeds of three influencers, namely: dr. Tirta, dr. Reisa and dr. Sonia. The findings showed that in general, all of the three doctors’ narratives have five narrative elements: abstract, orientation, complicating action, resolution, and coda. However, two of dr. Sonia's narratives have four narrative elements: abstract, orientation, complicating action and coda. This is due to dr. Sonia's narratives that have less lines than dr. Reisa's narratives.Keyword: Narrative, Instagram, Instagram feeds, COVID-19, Pandemic.

Abstract

This thesis focuses on the way the non-white characters, such as Black and Asian, are portrayed in Harry Potter movies. The non-white people are put in the group of unimportant characters. Their characters seem to be portrayed differently compared to the white characters in term of their characterizations. Using film language theory, such as body language and dialogue, I find there are Stereotyping and Othering towards the non-white characters. I analyze the Stereotyping toward non-white characters such as Cho Chang and Kingsley Shacklebolt as the Asian and Black character using the gestures, facial expression, costumes, and dialogues. I also analyze the Othering towards non-white characters such as Centaurs and Dre Head as the non-human characters using the appearance, accents, and costume. Also, the Yule Ball costume for Cho Chang and Patil twins also shows exoticism because of the races of the characters. Keywords: Racism, Stereotyping, Othering, Representation, Fantasy Fiction
