Abstract

Background: Cocoa’s (T. cacao) pod husk extract substances is one of many natural ingredients that can potentially be used as an alternative to root canal irrigation. The particle size of this active substances will affect its ability to cross the cell membrane. Further research is needed on which extraction method is better to use. Objective: To determine the effect of maceration and ultrasonic methods on the particle size of T. cacao pod husk. Methods: Cocoa pod husk powder was measured using Particle Size Analyzer (PSA) and then extracted by maceration and Ultrasonic Assisted Extraction (UAE) using 80% ethanol as solvent. The particles of both extracts were re-measured using PSA. Data analysis was carried out using paired T-Test and independent T-Test. Result: The particle size of T. cacao pod husk extract with maceration had a significant difference (p<0.05) compared to T. cacao pod husk extract with ultrasonic with a p value of 0.025. The particle size of T. cacao pod husk extract using ultrasonic has a smaller average particle size with an average difference of 114 nm. Conclusion: T. cacao pod husk extract using UAE has a smaller average particle size. This particle size can increase the antibacterial activity of the T. cacao pod husk extract.

Abstract

Background: In 2018, Indonesian Baseline Health Research stated that the prevalence of dental caries in Indonesia is 88.8%, which indicates that it has the highest prevalence of oral and dental health issues in Indonesia If left untreated dental caries can cause issues that negatively affect someone’s quality of life. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, dentist appointments have been on a decline, due to fear of contracting COVID-19. Furthermore, PDGI have released a circular letter that urges direct dentist practice to be done only in emergency and advised dentists to give dental health service through teledentistry instead. This is supported by the regulation implemented by the Indonesian Medical Council and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia regarding the use of telemedicine. Objective: The purpose of this research is to determine if the usage of teledentistry is effective in screening dental caries. Methods: The Scoping Review method on this research is systematically done in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines and uses the data basis of Google Scholar. Result: There are six journals included on this research, and each of them studied the use of teledentistry to screen dental caries. Conclusion: The research found that during the COVID-19 pandemic, early examination can be done with teledentistry which is proven effective in screening dental caries before patients are given further treatment by dentists, despite the limitations.

Abstract

Background: Sodium hypochloride (NaOCl), which is the gold standard for irrigation solutions, has low bactericidal activity against Enterococcus faecalis, the main cause of root canal treatments failure. This resistance due to its proton pump, which can also be found in Escherichia coli. This research was conducted using a combination of NaOCl with lansoprazole, the latest generation proton pump inhibitor. Objective: To determine the antibacterial effect of the combination of NaOCl with various concentrations of lansoprazole against E. faecalis and E. coli. Method: Laboratory experimental research in vitro with the diffusion method which was carried out in the MiCORE laboratory, Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Trisakti. The independent variables were 5.25% NaOCl combination of 4% and 8.5% lansoprazole, 8.5% lansoprazole, 5.25% NaOCl combination of omeprazole 8.5%, 5.25% NaOCl and aquadest. Results: There was no inhibition zone of E. faecalis and E. coli in 8.5% lansoprazole, 5.25% NaOCl combination of omeprazole 8.5%, and aquadest. Inhibition zones of E. faecalis and E. coli were formed in 5.25% NaOCl combination of 4% lansoprazole, 5.25% NaOCl combination of 8.5% lansoprazole, and 5.25% NaOCl. The mean value of the inhibition zone of E. faecalis were 14,4±2,10 mm, 10,89±0,68 mm, and 25,9±1,46 mm respectively. Meanwhile, the mean value of the inhibition zone of E. coli were 19,48±2,48 mm, 10,89±0,76 mm, dan 30,22±1,10 mm. Conclusion: The antibacterial effect of 5.25% NaOCl combination of 4% and 8.5% lansoprazole was less effective than the antibacterial effect of 5.25% NaOCl.

Abstract

Background:Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease that can be life-threatening. The prevalence of DM increases every year along with obesity. There are a lot of oral manifestations of DM so dentists play an important role in the treatment of DM. The most common oral manifestations found in DM patients is periodontal disease which has a two-way relationship with DM. Dentists can also be the first to know the presence of DM in their patients. Therefore, it is important for dentists to have good knowledge and attitudes regarding the oral health of DM patients. Objective:To determine the knowledge profile and attitudes of dentists regarding the oral health of DM patients. Methods:Descriptive observational study using a validated questionnaire consisting of 30 questions about knowledge and 12 statements about the attitude of dentists regarding the oral health of DM patients.. Questionnaires were distributed via google form to dentists who are members of the West Jakarta PDGI. Results:The number of respondents in this study were 62 dentists, members of the West Jakarta PDGI. 100% of respondents agree that DM will affect the wound healing process and cause loose teeth. However, 45.16% of respondents did not agree that periodontal treatment (scaling and root planing) can improve glycemic control in DM patients. Only 46.77% of respondents always do scaling and only 19.35% of respondents do root planing for DM patients. 64.52% of respondents do not always update their knowledge about DM. Conclusion: Most dentists understand the prognosis, complications, and risk factors for DM, but do not really understand that periodontal treatment can help improve glycemic control.
