Abstract

The aim of this research is to discover the maxims that the main characters in the film "I Care a Lot" break, as well as the many forms of conversational implicatures that occur in the film. This research focuses on film analysis using Grice's implicature theory and cooperative principle (1975). The information was then evaluated using a qualitative descriptive approach. The goal of this study was to improve readers' understanding of pragmatics, particularly those connected to conversational implicatures. In addition, this study might be used as a source of information for future research. The findings demonstrate that the researchers detected 33 conversational implicature utterances, 21 Generalized Conversational Implicature utterances, and 12 Particularized Conversational Implicature utterances among the 225 utterances of the main character in the film "I care a lot." The researchers discovered 34 statements that violated the maxims based on the sorts of maxims proposed by Grice (1975). As a result, the main character frequently violates the rule by using Generalized Conversational implicature.

Abstract

The movie "Your Name Engraved Herein," by Kuang-Hui Liu, is the subject of this study. The main character in the movie is homosexual, and the writer aims to explore homosexuality through character. This study applied Alan Swingewood's sociological literature theory, which sees literary works as direct reflections of society. In other words, literary works cannot be separated from the social realities that exist in society. This study aims to find out (1) conflict that experienced by main character as gay (2) the way taken by them to overcome the conflict, and (3) the perception of Taiwanese society towards homosexuals reflected in the movie. The results of this research indicate a correlation between real-life conditions in Taiwan in 1987 and the situation depicted in the movie. In the movie, homosexuality is viewed as a mental illness and disorder. Society believes that keeping gays around them will have a negative impact and may lead to others become same-sex lovers. This state is reflected in Kuang-Hui Liu's and his lover's fear of public judgment.

Abstract

Figurative language is a means of giving words an additional dimension. Poets use figurative language because it allows them to express their ideas more creatively and subtly than if they used direct and flat language. The purpose of this thesis is to identify the many figurative language styles used in the works of William Shakespeare. There are 12 types of figurative language according to Perrine ides. Qualitative descriptive method was used in this study. In this study, sonnets 29, 73, 94, 98, 116, and 131 were sampled. The initial aim of this study was to describe the many figurative language styles used in William Shakespeare's sonnets. Using Perrine theory, the findings of this study indicate that there are nine types of figure of speech found, including simile, metaphor, personification, symbol, synecdoche, hyperbole, paradox, irony, and disparaging. Simile is the most common form of figurative language in selected poems. The second objective of this study is to examine the significance of each figurative phrase used in William Shakespeare's sonnets. The underlying concept, emotion, or mood that poetry expresses is known as meaning. So, the meaning of poetry is the explicit or implied message conveyed by the poet using Leech's theory which divides seven kinds of meaning. Research findings are presented in 25 extracts. Researchers did not find all of them but only found five meanings, namely conceptual meaning, connotative meaning, social meaning, effective meaning, reflection meaning, collotative meaning, and thematic meaning. The most widely used types of meaning are connotative meaning and social meaning.
