Tamaddun is a multidisciplinary peer reviewed and open access journal in language, literature, and culture. The aim is to publish conceptual and research articles that explore the application of any language in teaching and the everyday experience of language in education. Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) has a role in developing the students’ competence if the learning programs and materials are designed and developed based on their needs. Language coverage in ESP in certain cases is different from general English. ESP programs and materials are goal-oriented, therefore it needs to be understood that English has function and role as a tool of communication in conveying thoughts and feelings to others. The well-designed and developed ESP programs and materials are expected to have a role to improve their English competence specifically. Thus, it is expected that the graduates of English language and literature will be able to master their fields and English in other science fields specifically.

Abstract

UMI Arabic language lecturers using audio-visual will be helped in learning Arabic. The development and advancement of technology provide a variety of audiovisual alternatives. The reality is that UMI lecturers generally use audiovisuals which are still limited to tapes and videos whose numbers are very limited. For this reason, in the process of learning Arabic, it needs to be great attention from lecturers in preparing teaching materials accompanied by media that can support the occurrence of active, innovative and productive learning processes, so that students not only memorize and know vocabulary but are able to apply all the vocabulary and grammar he understands in everyday conversation. This study aims to describe the effectivenessof learning Arabic with audiovisual media. This type of research is field research using a descriptive qualitative approach. The object of the research is the application of audiovisual media in learning Arabic Language students of West Asian Literature, Faculty of Literature and Students of Arabic Language Education, Faculty of Islamic Religion, University of Indonesia. Methods of collecting data with questionnaires, interviews, observation, and documentation. Data processing methods are carried out in three stages, namely preparation, data collection stage and data processing stage. The process of data analysis using data triangulation methods,namely: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The three components are interrelated and carried out together in the process of concluding the final results of the study. The output that will be achieved is the publication of effective audiovisual use textbooks in learning Arabic.

Abstract

This study discusses the use of speech acts by lecturers and students in the learning process and their implications for increasing student interest in learning Arabic at the Muslim University of Indonesia. The method used is a qualitative analysis method with a speech act analysis approach. Lecturer and student communication events are an important indicator in the learning process because they have an impact on the level of student interest in learning towards the learning material presented in the lecture. The purpose of this study was to analyze the types of speech acts used by lecturers on students and to analyze the impact of their influence on the level of student interest in learning in the learning process at the Arabic Literature Department. This research is expected to theoretically be able to contribute to the development of pragmatics, especially speech acts. and practically this research is expected to make a positive contribution to the development of the alma mater and language character education which creates positive duplication in speech and contains ethical and proportional cultural values. The results show that seen from the way of delivery, the speech acts used are more direct, which is called the meaning of locus than the way of delivery that is indirect (indirect) or is called the meaning of illocution. However, in perlocution, the lecturers' speech acts towards students received a positive response or attitude from most students (ranging from 60-65 percent). It can be argued that although most of the direct speech acts are used, they can be colored by the use of utterances according to the guidance of the quranic speech act patterns, so that the acts.

Abstract

This paper discussed what values exist in the ceremony of Maccera Tappareng in Wajo Regency. This is intended to express all kinds of values in the ritual system of Maccera Tappareng, especially in Wajo Regency. This paper used the qualitative method with a descriptive approach and the data collection was done using triangulation are interviews, observation, and documents. The results of this study show the ceremony of Maccera Tappareng as local culture gives information about the values still exist in this culture in preserving the ceremony of Maccera Tappareng in Wajo regency.

Abstract

This research investigates cohesive devices errors in paragraphs written by the seventh semester students at UMI Makassar. This graduating paper intends to be a descriptive qualitative research which consist of a detail linguistic description and explanation of cohesive devices errors. It explains how cohesion is used erroneously in the students’ writing. The objectives of this research are to know whether there are any cohesive errors in English essays written by the seventh semester students at UMI Makassar, to find out the types of cohesive devices error committed in those paragraphs, and to describe the dominant of errors in using cohesive devices in those paragraphs. The results show that a total of 25 errors are identified in those paragraphs include errors on the use of reference, conjunction and lexical cohesion. Errors on the use of substitution and ellipsis are not found. The percentage of errors on the use of reference is 64%, conjunction 24%, and lexical cohesion 12%. From percentage of each types of errors on the use of cohesive devices, reference becomes the first dominant error, conjunction as the second dominant error, and lexical cohesion as the last dominant error.

Abstract

This study raises issues about what it means and how to apply sipakatau, sipakalebbi, sipakainge in Bugis culture. This study aimed to get an idea of the meaning sipakatau, sipakalebbi, sipakainge, in Bugis culture and to know how it is applied in Bugis culture. There were two benefits in this study, the benefits of theoretical and practical benefits. The model of this research was qualitative models. The stages in this study were under preparation, data collection, and data processing stages. Data were analyzed based on the words, sentences and paragraphs. Analysis of the data in this study presented informally, by formulating with ordinary words. The result of this study indicate that the meaning of sipakatau is mutually humanizing, sipakalebbi is mutual understanding or respect and sipakainge is remind each other. Based on the observations stated sipakatau, sipakalebbi, sipakainge days ago still heal tightly by Bugis community of Wajo, because they think that this culture that has a message from the ancestors. Whereas in the present, in urban culture, the bugis culture is heading to extinct due to globalization, but in rural areas there is still a applied well.

Abstract

The reseach objectives are to know whats ymbols are performed in Lariangi dance and what meaning are conveyed in the symbols performed in Lariangi dance. The research used descriptive qualitative method to take information. The writer obsereved the house in Liya village and took some informations from them and interviewed and documented by using recorded and camera. This research also took the datum from some books, articles, internet which associat with the symbols in Lariangi dance in Wakatobi Southeast Sulawesi. The research resulted in the part of symbols in Lariangi dance start from dress, accessories, movement of the dance and the songs of Lariangi dance. The result of the research was consisted in four part. First, the symbols found in dress there are six namely Kombo Monihi, Kombo Meha, Punto/Wuray Nibelo Biru, Laka/Wuray Meha, Kambero, and Lenso/Saputangan symbolyzes sweat rag of King Buton. The second, there are eight symbols and their meaning found in accessories, namely Panto and Pintoru, Hepupu/Konde, Kamba Konde, Toboy Kamba, Hebindu/Sangi-Sangi, Kalo, Naga, Sekori Keponto Posusu symbolyzes degrees nobility. The third, there are four symbols found in movement of Lariangi dance namely, Hematu kepooli le..le, Pajogi/Nyibing/Ngifi, Nabu/Tau, and Lariangi symbolyzes Lighting. The last is symbols found in song of Lariangi dance there are nine songs namely Mangu-Mangu, Ole-Ole, Doumaraia, Denda Aule, Sailila, Waindi-Indi, Rongande, Jojongana, and Salatu symbolyzes as thankful to Allah SWT.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know the local culture in Sinjai. As we see today is the technology and foreign cultures that keep us from the life and culture of our ancestors gradually been worn. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive method that given images or facts. The writer needed library research, field research, observation, interview, and documentation to support the data. Marimpa Salo is dispels activities from upstream to the mouth of the fish is done in two villages namely Sanjai Village and Bua Village, both of which are mediated by Appareng River. This tradition has been carried out in the time of Bulo Bulo kingdom are still preserved Sinjai district until now. The results of this study are expected to be fruitful thought "let 's preserve our culture for posterity and for Indonesia”.

Abstract

Sejak munculnya Agama Islam perhatian terhadap bahasa sangat besar artinya ini disebabkan karena tak satupun pembahasan dalam kajian keislaman baik itu fiqih, tafsir, hadits yang tidak menggunakan bahasa sebagai acuan pertama dan utama. Seiring dengan munculnya ilmu filsafat kedalam kajian Islam maka bahasa mengalami perkembangan yang luar biasa sebagaimana kita saksikan pada abad kedua dan ketiga hijriah, lahirnya para pakar ilmu bahasa yang membahas bahasa dari segala aspek, bukan hanya aspek nahwu, saraf semata tapi sudah masuk ke pembahasan filsafat bahasa bahkan akhirnya munculah macam-macam kajian bahasa seperti sosiolinguistik, psikolinguistik, dll. Hal ini membuat para pengkaji baik bahasa baik di timur tengah maupun di Barat terjadi saling melengkapi.

Abstract

In order to improve the quality of learning English, especially listening skills, students of the English Literature Study Program and the English Language Education Study Program submitted the research title "Improving the Skill of Student Multimedia Comprehension Listening Through Multimedia-Based Song Media." The specific objectives of this study were to: 1) improve listening skills in English-speaking students of the English Language and Literature Study Program at the Faculty of Letters of UMI; 2) developing listening learning models with multimedia-based song media. This research was conducted in the UMI English Literature and English Language Education Study Program at the Faculty of Letters with targeted results as follows: 1) in one year this was a valid draft model for learning listening with multimedia-based song media. The method used in this study is action research with a population of 156 students. This study produced a draft listening comprehension model, the results of the study showed that the learning process of Listening comprehension used multimedia-based songs with subtitles of positive student responses. From the questionnaire / questionnaire / close questionnaire shows ≥ 75% of students respond more easily and prefer the learning process to understand meaning and understand what is heard from native speakers in learning listening comprehension. This study recommends for listening lecturers to use songs as one of the media in learning that will improve student skills
