Abstract

This study aimed at discovering the characterization of Irewa presented in Dorothea Herliany’s Novel and describe feminism reflected in the characterization of Irewa in the novel .The data of this study were the sentences of characterization of main character found in Isinga novel. The data were collected by using documentation technique. The data were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative analysis. The findings of this study were Irewa’s does, says and other thinks about her character’s described toward feminism. In addition, feminism diverse area of inquiry, dealing with the history of women’s.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to discover the effect of applying Four Square Graphic Organizeron students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. It was conducted by usingexperimental research design. The population of this research was the seventh(VII) grade students of SMP Sultan Iskandar Muda Medan with four parallelclasses. The samples of the research were two classes divided into two groups,experimental and control group which were chosen by using random samplingtechnique. Fifty students were taken as the samples. The experimental group wastaught by using Four Square Graphic Organizer, while the control group wastaught by using freewriting technique. The instrument for collecting the data was awriting test. Pearson Product Moment formula was applied to obtain the reliabilityof the test. Based on the calculation, it shows that the reliability of the test was0,84 categorized as high reliability. Then, after analyzing the data, it was foundthat the value of tobserved was 3,66 with the degree of freedom (df)=48 at the levelof significance p(0,05) = 2,01. It means that tobserved is higher than ttable (3,66 >2,01). The result of this study shows that Four Square Graphic Organizer has asignificant effect on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text.Keywords: writing, descriptive text, Four Square Graphic Organizer,experimental research

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to find out 1) The types of sarcasm in TV Series Friends, and 2) The purpose of sarcasm in TV Series Friends. The data were analyzed in descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research were from the utterance of Friends’ cast or character. The data were taken from all the words, phrases, clauses, sentences in Friends transcript which available on the internet. The result of this research showed that 1) there were four types of sarcasm are used by Friends’ character, namely: like-prefixed sarcasm with a total number 9 utterances (21.4%), lexical sarcasm with a total number 11 utterances (26.2%), propositional sarcasm with total 16 utterances (38.1%), and illocutionary 6 utterances (14.3%). 2) There were five purposes of sarcasm are used by Friends’ character, namely: sophistication with a total number 19 utterances (45.2%), evaluation with a total number 5 utterances (11.9%), tool for politeness with a total 5 utterances (11.9%), the persuasive aspect with a total number 7 utterances (16.7%), retract ability with a total 1 utterance (2.4%) and group affiliation with a total number 5 utterances (11.9%).

Abstract

Abstract This study deals with the improvement of the students’ achievement by using Outline technique. This research was conducted by applying classroom action research in two cycles. The subject of this research was one of a class in the first year student of SMU Yayasan Pendidikan Sultan Iskandar Muda. There were 35 students that participated in this research. The quantitative and qualitative data were gahtered in administrating  writing test and diary notes. The result of quantitative data obtained that the score of the students inproved from cycle I to cycle II which the mean of the pre-test was 70.6, the test of cycle I was 75.8, and the test of cycle II was 85,2. The result of the quanlitative data described that the using of the Outline technique help to improve the students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph.   Key Words : writing, writing achievement, paragraph, outline, references.

Abstract

This study deals with the Error Analysis on English Department Students’ Thesis Backgrounds in State University of Medan. The objective of this research are: 1. To find the types of errors are frequently found in thesis background written by graduated students of English department at State University of Medan. 2. To find the source of the errors that found in the thesis background of graduated students  of English Department. Related to the object of the research, the researcher used the descriptive qualitative method. The research was conducted at Reading Room Faculty of Lamguages and Arts. The object of this research is 30 theses. The result of this research showed that there are 103 errors of Misformation that happened because the students write the  sentences  in  present tense, while  the thesis background study has to be written in past tense. The highest recapitulation showed that the most source of error is “intralingual transfer”. Keywords: error analysis, thesis backgrounds

Abstract

This study attempts to  improve students’ vocabulary achievement by using Personal Vocabulary Notes. This research was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this study was VIII-B class SMP Santa Maria Medan which consisted of 46 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The result showed that the improvement of the students’ scores from the first test in orientation test to the third test in cycle-II test. In the first test in orientation test, the mean was 46.95, in the second test in cycle-I test, the mean was 64.86, and the third test in cycle-II test, it was improved to be 80.45. Based on the diary notes, observation sheet, and questionnaire, it was found that the teaching learning activities ran well. Students were active and enthusiastic during the teaching learning process in the second cycle than the first one. The result of the researcher showed that the use of personal vocabulary notes significantly improved students’ vocabulary.   Keywords: Vocabulary, Action Research, Personal Vocabulary Notes

Abstract

This study deals with the characterization of Ronggur as the main character in Toba Dreams Movie and it was aimed to knowing the characteristics of antisocial personality of Ronggur in the movie. It was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data was taken from Toba Dreams movie and the data were which showed actions and dramatic statements from Ronggur and other characters in the movie. The findings of the study showed that the characteristics of antisocial personality of Ronggur are : (1) failure to conform to social norms and respect lawful behaviours with 2 items, (2) deceitfulness with 10 items, (3) impulsivity with 5 items, (4) irritability with 33 items, (5) reckless disregard for the safety of self or others with 7 items, (6) Lack of Remorse with 3 items. The method of characterization and antisocial characteristics used on the main character in Toba Dreams have different meaning. Which in Robert & Jacobs theory of characterization methods presents antisocial personality characteristics, whereas in Schwartz theory antisocial characteristics apply to see the depiction of antisocial personality.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study dealt with the improvement of students’ narrative writing achievement through Experiential Learning. The objective of this study was to find out whether students’ achievement in narrative writing can be improved if the students are taught by using Experiential Learning technique. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of this study was class XI IA-1 of SMA Negeri 4 Pematangsiantar, consisted of 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles; each cycle consisted of three meetings. The instruments of data collections were writing tests for the quantitative data, and observation sheets and diary notes for the qualitative data. By the end of Cycle II there was an improvement as much as 25.56 points in the mean of the students’ score or 50.7% higher than the preliminary test. The research findings proved that Experiential Learning can significantly improve students’ achievement in narrative writing.   Keywords: Narrative Writing, Experiential Learning, Students’ Achievement

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the principle of cooperation that occurs at the Hotman Paris Show and the reason for the participants to violate the maxims. The method used by researchers in this study is qualitative research with data sourced from the Hotman Paris Show youtube account that uses #trending in the publishing process so that 17 videos are obtained. Data collection techniques using documentary techniques as data collection instruments. The analysis technique used is: 1) Identify the types of maxims and factors that violate the principle of cooperation that occurs at the Hotman Paris Show 2) Reducing irrelevant data sources with maxims and factors that violate the principle of cooperation 3) Classifying the data to its types 4) Interpreting the expressions of the principles of cooperation and factors that violate the principle of cooperation that occur in the conversations of the participants and 5) Drawing the conclusions based on the research problem of this study. The results of this research principle of cooperation on the maxim of quantity with the number of 65 utterances (64%), the maxim of quality with the number of 19 utterances (19%), the maxims of the relationship with the number of 8 utterances (8%) and manner with the number of 9 utterances (9 %). In the analysis of reasons, there were 83 errors made by participants which were divided into understatements of 20 data (24%), irony17 data (20%), overstatements 13 data (15%), extreme 10 data (12%), sarcasm 8 data (10%), ambiguous statements 7 data (8%), irrelevant statement 6 data (8%), and metaphors 3 data (4%).

Abstract

Abstract This study concerrns with improving students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text through anticipation guide.The objective was to investigate improvement of students’ reading comprehension by applying anticipation guide. This research was conducted by using action research method. The subject of the study was grade VII students of SMP SWASTA TAMAN HARAPAN MEDAN totalling to 30 students. They were taught reading comprehension by anticipation guide. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data and qualitative data (observation sheet and questionnaire sheet). Based on the test score of quantitative data, students’ score kept improving in every evaluation. In the orientation test the mean was 51, in the cycle I test the mean was 67,6. In the cycle II test the mean was 79,6. The percentage of orientation test was 16,6 %, cycle I test was 30 % and cycle II test was 73,3 %. The finding of the research showed that applying anticipation guide significantly improved students’ reading comprehension. The qualitative data show that the students were more interested and motivated on reading comprehension through anticipation guide. It is suggested that teachers should apply anticipation guide as one of strategy to improve students’ reading comprehension.
