Abstract

This paper focuses on the challenges and strategies of Islamic education in Indonesia facing ASEAN Community in 2015. Using qualitative approach the writer finds that Islamic education in Indonesia has encountered a serious number of problems. The majority of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) are still run in traditional ways (salafi). In addition, the majority of  the school leaders do not posses higher education background. Similarly, higher education level has also dealt with another problematic matter in whichunder graduatestudents are dominant with 93% compare to graduate students with only 7%. These phenomena would be serious problem for Islamic education in Indonesia facing 2015 ASEAN Community. The question is whether Indonesian Muslims are able to compete with other ASEAN member countries, such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. Another challenge is that the shifting paradigm from the traditional society to the secular-materialistic one. In this context, therefore, the Islamic education in Indonesia is urged to play its pivotal role.

Abstract

The social structure of Madurese society gives a high position to kyai for playing roles both politics  and religion, as well as social and culture fields. Roles they say “bhepa’ bhebu’ guruh ratoh.” These affirms that Madurese people should regard parent first, then teacher (kyai), and at last ruler (ratoh). Yet, practically, people give more affection, loyalty, devotion, and dedication for the kyai than to their parent. From this reality, this paper aims to elucidate the inter-connection between politics and religion, in the process of local election of Pamekasan 2008. It articulates how the kyai intensively participated in local election using both social and religious domains. The study showed that  the roles of the religion, social structure, and politics “communicate” each other.b

Abstract

This article discusses the concept of democracy and the Islamic rule of law. Democracy is the supreme sovereignty of the people hands. On the other hand,  Islam is considered to theocracy, the highest of power is God's sovereignty. Both are different, but that there is an idea that  Islamology discourse ignores the contradictions between them, such as the concept of theo-democracy and concepts of Islam substantially. Both assume that Islam is relevant to democracy, such as tolerance, justice and equality. This ignores the formality of Islam, and does not emphasize a formal implementation of sharia. Islamic law (shari'a), can be implemented in a modern state, especially in Indonesia, by following the procedures in the legal system and modern law. The steps which being taken are the formulation, socialization and political stages.

Abstract

This article tries to map the political competence of legislative candidates and voters. It also attempts to formulate the simulation of the future democracy reality and formulate character education, which could be a comprehensive reference in political education. This becomes important matter for the democratic process,  which is initiated from a comprehensive political education based on plausible values and reasons. Employing qualitative-phenomenological approach, the results of analysis show that the competence of incumbent legislators are low and they are unable to convince the voters. This condition is caused by the failure of political education and the weakness of political system. The emergence of transactional motive among the voters is an effect of the failure of political education. The writer argues that this condition should be elucidated through political education which builds character and guides the voters to vote for the politicians with good morality and ability.
