Abstract

Education serves as a means to develop intelligence, abilities, and skills to shape students' personalities. Education must be linked to reality, close to students, and relevant to society in order to have human values. The importance of strengthening character education is needed along with the weakening of the nation's character. Therefore, educational institutions in Indonesia can implement education based on local wisdom. Education-based on local wisdom is education that is based more on cultural values. Besides, character education based on local cultural wisdom also has the aim of changing the attitudes and behavior of existing human resources in order to increase work productivity to face various challenges in the future. This study aims to obtain a picture of the internalization of the value of local wisdom mappatulung as a reinforcement of character, and efforts in its preservation. This type of research is qualitative research, which is a series of studies relating to observation, data collection, and concluding. With learning based on local wisdom, it is expected to be closer to the lives of students and the community as well as to recognize the noble values of the nation's culture as reinforcing their character.

Abstract

This project was an investigation on the utilization of social media and academic performance of students in Geography in Nsit Atai Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Four schools out of six public secondary schools in Nsit Atai Local Government Area were selected for the study. The population size was 1108 students, while the sample size was 100 students. The correlational research design was adopted for the study. The instruments for data collection were Social Media Utilization Questionnaire (SMUQ) and Geography Achievement Test (GAT). The instruments were validated by the supervisor and tested for reliability; a reliability coefficient of 0.78 was obtained using the test-retest method reliability test. Two research questions and null hypotheses, respectively were stated to guide the study. Data obtained from the students using the SMUQ and GAT were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMC).The hypotheses were tested at .05 alpha level of significance. Concerning the findings of this study, it was deduced that there was a fragile positive relationship between students’ utilization of Whastapp, as well as Facebook social media and their academic performance in Geography. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that social media utilization should be encouraged among students as this will help them develop excellent communication skills, build interactions, share ideas and enhance collaboration between students, teachers, and parents alike. 
The Attitude of Teachers and Parents of Students towards the Implementation of School Management Committee (SMCs) at Elementary Level

Abstract

The main purposes of the present study were to analyze the attitude of the teachers and parents towards the implementation of School management Committee as elementary level and to examine the significant difference in the attitude of parents (rural and urban) and teachers (male and female). The descriptive survey method was adopted for conducting research, where 20 elementary schools (10 rural and 10 urban) of Sambalpur district, Odisha were taken, from which 160 samples were selected randomly composing both parents and students as a whole. A five-point attitude scale was prepared for collecting relevant data from the sample groups, and the simple percentage technique and ‘t’ test was applied to analyse the obtained data. The findings of the study revealed that Majority of parents and teachers agreed that the formation of the School management Committee at the elementary level is a good step taken by the Government. Both rural and urban parents differed significantly in their attitude towards the implementation of the School Management Committee. In comparison to rural and urban parents, rural parents had a more favourable attitude than urban parents towards SMC. There was no sign of the difference between male and female teachers towards the implementation of the School Management Committee. Both showed an equal favourable attitude.

Abstract

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in now a day plays a very strategic role in the transforming phase of education. Thus government also taking many initiatives and tried to integrate ICT to teaching learning process like the introduction of ICT@School Scheme. But the problem lies in its effective use in classroom. Is teacher being competent enough in use of ICT in classroom, what are the some of the changes teachers are making when they used ICT tools with their students in the classroom and how strategies are changing, what contributes to the change, and what is the change in classroom dynamics and traditional time structures? These were the few issues which addressed in the present study. For this purpose, a qualitative approach with an interview study was adopted for the study. Further, it delimited to Cuttack district of Odisha and ten secondary schools and total thirty teachers, three from each school was selected as its sample by using purposive sampling method. The investigator makes classroom observation, extensive field notes and interview with the respondents for collection of data. The collected data was analyzed by thematic description related to foregoing issues with specific reference to the four key themes: the changing role of the teacher, classroom dynamics, teacher predictions of ICT in school and the concept of the classroom. The findings of the study revealed that the ICT in the classroom influenced the process of learning and in order to integrate ICT effectively, teachers are adopting different teaching strategies. Further it has also been revealed that they need drill for the power shift in the classroom because often students had more knowledge of ICT than them. The findings also revealed that the dynamic of the classroom was also changing due to ICT. Finally, the teachers needed time to learn about the technology and to understand how to integrate ICT into the curriculum. 
Buzz Group Technique to Increase Writing Skill at EFL Students of Junior High School in Indonesia

Abstract

This research aimed to find out whether there was a significant difference of writing skill achievement between EFL students who were taught using Buzz Group technique and those who were taught using a conventional method by expecting the Buzz Group technique improved EFL students’ writing skill achievement at SMP Negeri 7 Baubau, Southeast Sulawesi. Design of this research was a quasi-experimental in which there were 22 students in both control and experimental groups. The findings of this research obtained: 1) the mean score of EFL students’ writing skill at pretest in experimental class was 51.09 in low category and the mean score of posttest was 72.18 in high category; 2) the mean score of EFL students’ writing skill at pretest in control class was 49.82 in low category and the mean score of posttest was 56.36 in moderate category; 3) the score of Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) from hypothesis test was 0.000 in which it was less than 0.05. Therefore, this research concluded that there was a significant difference between of writing skill achievement between EFL students who were taught using Buzz Group technique and those who were taught using the conventional method at SMP Negeri 7 Baubau. In addition, the use of Buzz Group technique is better than the conventional method to improve EFL students’ writing skill achievement.

Abstract

The research was conducted on the basis of skills that must be mastered by students still limited to the low-level thinking. It was because the learning process conducted not to develop and to improve the skill of solving the problem. The purpose of this study was to describe the increase in the social problem-solving skills of students. The method of the research was class action research with instruments of the observation sheet, test and questionnaire sheet.There are 24 students of the 5th graders of elementary as the subjects of this research. The data analysis techniques were quantitative and qualitative descriptions. The conclusion of the research was that the social inquiry learning model could improve social problem-solving skills students. In the learning activity, the teacher was the facilitator by observing, guiding, and assessing the students’ activities in solving the problems. The activities of the students in solving the students were defining the problems, finding the alternative in solving the problems, choosing the most appropriate way, predicting the solution and evaluating. After the lesson was over, the students were happy and giving positive response because they were involved directly in solving the problems.

Abstract

Course content is a hub of educational activities. The method of teaching and assessment procedure more or less rely on the nature of syllabus. Being core of educational activities great importance is given to course content.  This study was conducted to investigate the opinion of teachers concerning existing syllabus of intermediate level chemistry subject. The data was gathered through questionnaire based on 5 point Likert scale items. Sixty three teachers of chemistry subject were working at Government Degree Colleges (GDCs) and Government Higher Secondary Schools (GHSSs) of district Peshawar. Among sixty three fifty seven teachers were selected randomly as sample of study. The collected data prevail that the implemented syllabus is mostly based on theory, hence in such circumstance the national aim to produce skill generation as per demand of market seem impossible. The condition of practical work and hand on activities is dispiriting in government educational institutes. The psychological and social need of students has been ignored while designing the syllabus. The text book is a mean of imparting pre-set information, it seems failed to provide valuable engaging activities.

Abstract

The result of a preliminary study conducted by the researcher showed that the information literacy of students at the Elementary School Teacher (PGSD) Program was low. Therefore, this research was done to understand the effect of Empowering 8 model application in improving students’ information literacy. This research used the quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design. The research participants were 66 students, consisting of 33 students in the experimental class and 33 students in the control class. This research utilized some instruments, including pretest, posttest, questionnaires and observation sheets. The results obtained were: the students’ information literacy ability based on ARCL experimental class was in the high category. It revealed that application of Empowering 8 model had a positive effect on the students’ information literacy.
