Abstract

This research focuses on analysis student problems in learning to speak English at Vocational High School number 1 Jambi City. This research used qualitative research design. The aims of this research was to find out what problems students faced in speaking English during the covid-19 pandemic and the solutions students made to overcome these problems. In this case, a direct analysis of the problems faced by students in learning to speak English in the classroom during the covid-19 pandemic. This research took six students of class XI Accounting 1 as research subjects. This research used interview sheets and interviewed students to collect data. Based on the results of the study, regarding the problems of students in learning to speak at Vocational High School number 1 Jambi City, there were several student problems during the pandemic, located in the sixth question about the difficulty of speaking English, namely, lack of confidence, embarrassed to speak English, online learning made students feel less confident. self-confident. learning time in class, so that the problems faced by students are lack of pronunciation, fear of making mistakes when speaking English, lack of motivation of students in speaking English, students get into trouble because it is based on problems experienced and experienced by themselves. that happens in everyday life. In learning to speak English, and based on interviews, there are solutions to the problem, such as, using more English, translating sentences on Google, by listening to English music.

Abstract

This research was done to find the effect of scientific approach toward students’ writing achievement at tenth grade of SMA N 8 Kota Jambi Academic Year 2019/2020. The researcher used a quantitative method and quasi-experimental design as the research methodology with simple random sampling. The purpose of this research is to find out whether there is any significant effect or not of scientific approach toward students’ writing achievement. The sample of this research was the tenth of science grade students at SMA N 8 Kota Jambi. The instrument of this research was tests. This study involved 56 students of the tenth grade students at SMA N 8 Kota Jambi academic year 2019/2020 as the object of the study and divided into two classes. Students’ writing achievement is effect after treatment using scientific approach learning method which is proven with students writing achievement higher than before treatment. The average pre-test control class 48,6 and post-test control class 78,8. Average pre-test experimental class 53,5 and post-test 90,5.  Using scientific approach in teaching writing descriptive text makes learning activity more effective and students can well understand learning material in treatment process. Thus the alternative hypothesis is accepted, the value of t-test higher than the value of t-table (3,93>2,004). Based on the finding above, it can be concluded that using scientific approach as learning method has significant effect of students writing achievement at tenth grade students of SMA N 8 Kota Jambi.Key Words: Effect, Writing Achievement, Scientific Approach.

Abstract

AbstractCode mixing becomes phenomena of language. the code mixing can be applied among social interaction in bilingual. The aim of this Research is to provide a complete overview over the phenomenon of code mixing. The phenomenon in this research occur in social media. In this research, researcher presents why the strudents mix their language by status in social media. The researcher also match the type according what they in social media, The kind of research is qualitative research. The data are collected from WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook status by screenshoot. The participant were fourth students class B English Education the Study Program Batanghari University Academic year 2018-2019. Students in the class fourth B there are 15 people. Sample from random sampling method. Method of collecting data used in this research are interview to get information arround their knowledge and reasons to use code mixing and documentation which is taken social media by screenshoot the status to be evidence. The result of this research shows that the most type they use is. Research also shows the result of the reasons is talking about particular topic as the highest result. This is showing that students potentially insert their words with foreign language expecially English.Keywords : Code Mixing, Social Media

Abstract

This study aimed to find out students' achievement in writing analytical exposition text at the Eleventh Grade of SMAN 8 Jambi. This research took this title to find out what the student's lack of understanding the writing analytical exposition text and it is needed to know students' achievement in writing analytical exposition text as a learning tool to evaluate the learning process during pandemic covid-19. This research has 19 respondents and the methodology of this research is quantitative research. This study chose to research SMAN 8 Jambi because wanted to know students' achievement in writing analytical exposition text. In this research, there are three indicators of writing analytical exposition text were a thesis, argument, and reiteration. The student has the writing test based on the topic by This research and writes it with three indicators of analytical exposition text. From the result, This research found that there were 7 or 36,8% of the students who got a very good and good score. It means that there were students who got a standardized score from their test. 2 or 10,6% is for the students who got a fair score. And the last, 3 or 15,8% for the students who got the poor score. It means that there were students who suggest retaking or considered failing the test.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify whether or not there is a correlation between students‘ reading interest and their achievement in reading comprehension at the second grade of SMP N 5 Jambi city. This research used quantitative approach. The population of the research at the second grade was 375 students and class VII F is the sample of the research. The members of sample in this research were 36 students. The data of this research were collected by using two kinds of instruments. The first was Questionnnaire, and the second was reading comprehension test. The questionnaire was aimed at finding out the students‘ reading interest, both individual and situational interest. The reading comprehension test aimed to get the data of students‘ achievement. Based on the result of data analysis By Pearson Product Moment formula, the researcher found that r = 0.83. It indicated that the correlation was very strong. From the result of hypothesis testing of Tcount formula, it was gotten that Ha had a significant correlation. The correlation of students’ interest and their achievement in reading comprehension was accepted. More over, Ho showed that there was no significant correlation between students’ interest and their achievement in reading comprehension it was rejected.Key Words: Students’ Interest, Achievement, Reading Comprehension.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aim to find how the teacher’s questioning strategies enhance students’ concentration at X grade SMA PGRI 2 Jambi academic year 2017/2018. The design of this research is experimental design type one group pretest and posttest design, ie only take one experiment class without control class or comparator class. Subjects in this study were students X IPS 3 which amounted to 35 peoples and an English teacher who teaches class X IPS 3 SMA PGRI 2 Jambi. While the object in this study is the concentration of students before and after treatment. To find out the concentration of students, the students' behavior was observed at the pretest and posttest. Then the data that has been collected will be analyzed statistically descriptive, after that interpreted quantitative by comparing the result before given treatment and after given treatment. The data will tested with Mann-Whitney U Test formula to make the conclusion.From this study found that the increased concentration of students after treatment. Before being given treatment, the concentration of students was 35.5% and after being given treatment the concentration of students increased to 62.55%. And the statistic result of Mann-Whitney U Test the hypotesis is accepted.Keywords: Teacher’s Questioning Strategies, Students’ Concentration, English Class

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out whether the writing task in “Pathway to English” textbook appropriate with the criteria of writing task as suggested by Paul Nation, in Nation’s theory. There are four kinds of tasks that suggested. Each of tasks has the following type : (1) Experienced Task (linked skills, draw and write, ten perfect sentences, partial writing, setting your own questions), (2) Shared Task (reproduction exercise/dicto-gloss, blackboard composition, group-class composition, writing with a secretary), (3) Guided Task (translation, picture composition, delayed copying, writing with grammar help, answer the questions, correction, complete the sentences, back writing, put the words in order, follow the model, what is it?, change the sentences, join the sentences, writing by steps, marking guided writing), (4) Independent Task. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative. To analyzed the data, the researcher used qualitative content analysis method. Research findings there are 54 types of writing task: 2 Experience task (1 Partial Writing, 1 Setting your own question), 1 Shared task ( 5 group class composition), 8 Guided task (1 translation, 7 look and write, 1 picture composition, 7 writing with grammar help, 10 answer the question, 4 correction, 11 complete the sentences, 2 put the words in order, 1 Independent task (6 independent).  The result of this research was that there are criteria are found that match with the criteria as suggested by Paul Nation, this proves that this book is appropriate with the criteria as suggested by Paul Nation.Key Words: Writing Task, English Textbook, Task Analysis

Abstract

This study deals in the slang word analysis in Avril Lavigne song lyrics “Head Above Water” album. This study aimed to identify the types of slang word found in Avril Lavigne song lyrics “Head Above Water” album, to find out the meaning of slang word in Avril Lavigne song lyrics “Head Above Water” album, to analyze the slang word which are realized in Avril Lavigne song lyrics “Head Above Water” album. Descriptive qualitative research was applied in this study. The data of research were taken from Avril Lavigne song lyric “Head Above Water” album, 74 words found in this song. The data were analyzed by identifying the song into four types of process, classifying the word in each type of slang, analyze the data into the slang word. It was found that there were four types of slang in selected Avril Lavigne song lyrics “Head Above Water” album namely blending, coinage, clipping, and compounding. The writer found the most widely types of slang namely clipping among words of slang in selected 8 songs lyrics of Avril Lavigne “Head Above Water” album. The researcher was realized that the words where the slang word which was found in Avril Lavigne song lyrics “Head Above Water” album by reading all the lyrics in detail and analyzing the word by trying find the correct word or the real meaning, then the researcher can decide the word was called the slang word.Key words: Analysis, Slang Word, Avril Lavigne Song Lyrics

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine students’ motivation in learning English. This research is one of the influential factors in increasing student learning motivation. Learning success depends on the motivation of high or low students’ in learning. Motivation can encourage students to achieve learning goals in school. The research design in this study is descriptive quantitative survey research. The population of this study was all 11th grade students at SMAN 8 Kota Jambi. The sample used is random sampling. The researcher took students in each 11 IPA class with a total of 15% from each class in taking a sample of 6 people, and from all 11th grades IPA were 48 people as samples. The research instrument was a questionnaire, analysis of data using Likert analysis, percentage formula and to strengthen research, researcher also added interviews. The results of this study are indicated by students' answers in the questionnaire. There are 30 questions in the questionnaire. 15 questions for intrinsic motivation and 15 questions for extrinsic motivation. The calculation shows that students' intrinsic motivation score is 62% and extrinsic students are 38%. This means that students at SMAN 8 Kota Jambi have intrinsic motivation that is higher than extrinsic motivation in learning English.Keywords: English Learning, Motivation.

Abstract

Abstract This research is aimed at improving teaching Writing Skills for Recount Text especially Junior High School students at SMP Negeri 2 Kota Jambi. By using qualitative method this research tries to reveal some difficulties faced by the students in writing Recount Text and giving a resolution to overcome its difficulties. The sample was taken from Eight Grade Students at SMP Negeri 2 Kota Jambi which applied a qualitative research as mentioned by Creswell (2013:334) that Qualitative research is an inquiry process of understanding based on distinct methodological traditions of inquiry that explore a social or human problems. The researcher builds complex, holistic picture, analyze words, reports detailed views of informants, and conducts the study in a natural setting. Findings of this research is considered to be good in category with the percentage of students’ level skills is 6% in very good level, 14% classified in good level, 22% classified in fair level, 28% classified in weak level and 30% classified in poor level. The students’ of writing skills in recount text that weak category, because the students have learnt recount text more than 4 meetings and the teacher have explained seriously. The findings of the research will be useful for the English teachers and the students at Junior High School in using its results as teaching strategy and learning material for the teacher and the students as well.Keywords: Recount text, writing skills, Teaching strategy, Learning materials.
