Abstract

This study focuses on identifying the teachers’ perceptions regarding the flipped classroom method of using Google Classroom during the Covid-19 pandemic at a high school in Jambi city. Since the flipped classroom method utilizes technology to help the material delivery and teaching-learning process, then this study describes teachers' perceptions, experiences, and feelings as a participant and reveal how they apply the flipped classroom method using technology during the pandemic. This study uses qualitative methods because the analysis is in the form of descriptions, not numbers. The data were utterances containing the perception of the English teacher about the flipped classroom method, and the data source was from 2 female teachers who use this method in four classes. Some data were collected through open interviews in an observational study. The study revealed that there were some obstacles and merits to flipped classroom method of using Google classroom. In addition, researchers also suggest additional applications to assist teachers in teaching using Google Classroom to overcome ineffectiveness in providing instant feedback to students.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate teachers’ perceptions toward the use of English textbooks in teaching English and identify the teachers' obstacles to using the textbook. The participants of the study were two English teachers at an Islamic elementary school in Jambi. The study used a descriptive-qualitative approach and data collected through an interview. The results indicated that teachers had a positive attitude toward the textbook. Teachers employed textbook adaptation strategies by modifying tasks and adding and removing materials when using the textbook. Teachers encountered two major challenges: the level of difficulty of the material and limited instructional tools. The study's findings are likely to enhance teachers' knowledge of appropriate textbook criteria and to create meaningful and communicative purposes for future textbooks. Abstract

This study aimed to discuss about English students’ strategies to speak English of sixth semester English Education Department of The State Institute for Islamic Studies Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. The design of the study is Qualitative Method with a case study approach. Subjects of the study are the Sixth Semester Students of English Education Department and Faculty of Education and Teacher Training of The State Institute for Islamic Studies Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. In the collecting of data, the researcher used Observation and Interview. The analyzing technique is the data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The results of the research show that most of English students have strategies applied to increase their ability to speak English. They use learning strategies from watching movies, absorb the structure of English through Silent Period and Improving Fluency. Researchers did not find the learning strategies of Native Speakers applied by English students because very difficult to find native speakers in their areas. Researchers also find difficulties faced by English students to speak English such as Pronunciation, Vocabulary and Meaning and Grammar. But researchers have also found the other difficulties faced by English students which are fearful or nervous and the lack friends / partners who want to speak English with them to increase their speaking skills.

Abstract

One of the challenges to improving education quality is promoting reading and understanding of what is being read. Understanding reading skills is still a problem that is still crucial for language learners, especially in senior high school. Therefore, it is necessary to use interesting learning methods to help students improve their reading skills. In this regard, this study aims to know the effect of online newspapers to enhance students' reading skills. This study used experimental design. The researchers conducted this research at one of the senior high schools in Padang. A control class (n: 35) and an experimental class (36) were included in this study. then researchers use online newspapers originating from "TheJakartaPost" to teach experimental classes. At the same time, the chart is used as a teaching medium in the control class. Based on the findings. The researcher found a significant difference in the experimental class's pretest (76.10) and post-test (85.14) results. These results indicated a positive effect of online newspapers as media in reading achievement. Several recommendations and suggestions have been proposed for further studies to get more improvement.

Abstract

Many different types of study, including Project-Based Learning (PBL) studies conducted in English language teaching areas, have required a systematic review in order to be evaluated. The systematic review's evidence base incorporates the leading research hypotheses as well as empirical information based on subject-matter expertise. The several journal publications about PBL in English language teaching are methodically explained in this review. 13 articles from 1,194,338 from 2019 to 2022 were extracted with the use of three databases—ERIC, Research Gate and Google Scholar—and after taking inclusion and exclusion criteria into consideration. In general, this review is beneficial to teachers because it informs them of the journal papers that can be used to identify PBL research gaps.

Abstract

The presence kinds of applications are paramount ways to enhance students learning of English, particularly students’ enthusiasts. In this case, the researcher used Google Map to improve students' speaking skills in learning English, as well as to describe the students' responses to this application. Google Maps is one of the media that can be used in English learning because it is a collaborative tool, interactive, and innovative way to increase students' visualization of English material. The design method used by the researcher was Classroom Action Research. The information was gathered from the seventh grade and who was learned using Google Maps. There were ten students in total. The study discovered that each cycle made more progress in terms of students’ participation. Students appeared to be excited about putting their existing insights to use. The improvement is significant, particularly in terms of students’ participation and performance. It was possible to see this by comparing the researcher's notes, student interviews, observation sheets, and student tasks from cycle to cycle three. The use of Google Maps as a learning medium contributes to providing an enjoyable learning medium in English teaching and learning. On the other hand, three students were not actively involved, two were redundant to English, and two had difficulty recognizing unfamiliar words. Nevertheless, in each cycle they show improvement; the students are motivated and there was a desire to learn. Keywords: Speaking Ability, Google Map, Application, Contextually.
