Abstract

The purpose of this sociolinguistic research is to provide an in-depth analysis of language use as a reflection of power dynamics and social status in Greta Gerwig little Women (2019). This research uses a combination of film analysis and sociolinguistic theory to examine how language is used to communicate and influence power dynamics and social differences among the characters. Data was collected by closely observing the film, focusing on the language choices and communication strategies used by the characters. The analysis explores the complex nuances of language use in the context of social relations, examining differences in language use among different social groups, and the role of gender in shaping language patterns. The results highlight the interplay between language, power and social status in the story of the film "Little Women", providing valuable insights into the field of sociolinguistics and highlighting the importance of language in describing and challenging social dynamics. The analysis focuses on language use in the context of social relations, including language use by characters from different social groups and differences in language use between male and female characters. The research provides insights into the relationship between language, power, and social status in the context of film and makes a contribution to sociolinguistics.

Abstract

Literature is something that cannot be separated from people's lives, and films are one of the most popular forms of literary works today. Mental health is an important focus in everyone's life, to maintain and maintain sanity for a better life. This study discusses mental health problems, namely schizophrenia, with films as research objects. The purpose of this study was to find out the early symptoms of schizophrenia, the impact of schizophrenia, and the role of parents in responding to children with schizophrenia. This research uses descriptive qualitative method where the data collected is in the form of words, pictures and not numbers. Schizophrenia has two types of initial symptoms, namely positive symptoms and negative symptoms. In "FEAR OF RAIN" movie, the writer found that the character Rain (1). experiences positive symptoms, such as hallucinations and delusions. (2). The impact of schizophrenia makes it difficult for Rain to adapt to her family, friends and environment, because relapse can pose serious risks such. (3). In the film, the role of parents is very important like Rain parent’s who always accompany and support Rain in every difficult time. This shows how important the role of parents is in the condition of children with schizophrenia.The conclusion is that in  Fear of Rain movie the main character experiences early symptoms in the form of hallucinations and delusions that cause Rain to experience excessive anxiety and aggressive behavior.

Abstract

Reading has become one of the compulsory skills taught in schools and it is one skill which is tested in National Examinations in Indonesia. The needs to comprehend texts, particularly expositional ones, are indispensable. Therefore, this study has an objective to find out the significant differences in students’ evaluation of reading skills and generic structure in analytical and hortatory exposition. After calculating the data using a statistical application, SPSS, we obtained a significant difference in the second-grade students’ evaluation of MAN Darussalam Aceh Besar in analytical and hortatory exposition based on reading comprehension skills. It can be shown that Tcount is higher than Ttable (3.490 > 2.101). There is also a significant difference in students’ evaluation of detailed information and vocabulary skills. Most students had difficulties in answering inference questions. The calculation result of the generic structure of analytical and hortatory exposition shows no significant difference in the second-grade students’ evaluation of Analytical and Hortatory exposition. It can be demonstrated that Tcount (-1.500) is lower than Ttable (2.101). The generic structure comparison table between analytical and hortatory exposition showed no significant difference in students’ evaluation of the second-grade students in identifying the generic structure of the texts. Still, the students scored the lowest in identifying analytical exposition conclusions and hortatory exposition suggestions.

Abstract

There are lots of schools in Indonesia still use conventional learning method in learning English. That is still using the book as a medium of learning. Learning English using games is still minimal and rarely uses technology as a learning medium. Using games can be used as an alternative learning media that can make the learning process more effective, engaging, and fun. This research aims to develop learning English by using games for young learners. The author uses a case study method to describe and analyze using games at a private school in Darussalam elementary school. The findings of this study are: (1) Students can improve their English skills by using games that have several values that are by student learning which make the game more suitable to be used as a medium for learning English in the classroom for students. With special needs; (2) There are some visible results through the game. First, learning styles suit students so that they feel interested in learning. Second, motivation and background affect each student's learning progress, especially in English.

Abstract

The research entitled the effectiveness of Role Playing Game (RPG) examined in this research was how the effect of using Role playing game (RPG) to increase the second grade students reading comprehension at MAN 2 Lombok Tengah. This research was aimed to find out whether the use of Role-Playing Game (RPG) was effective or not to increase the second-grade students’ reading comprehension at MAN 2 Lombok Tengah. This research uses quantitative research methods with a pre-experimental approach in one group pre test and post test. This research was conducted at MAN 2 Lombok Tengah which consist of 112 second grade students in total and Class XI IBB was chosen as a sample with total of 17 students. The instruments used were a test of narrative that consist of 20 multiple choices. The research findings showed that the students’ difference before and after using Role Playing Game (RPG) was significantly effective. The results showed that students' pre-test scores were smaller than post test with mean score of pre test was 60.59. While the scores of post-test after treatment got better score than pre test, with mean score of 77.6. After that, 2 paired sample T-test was applied with a significance value of sig. (2 paired) was 0.001. Because the results obtained are Sig < a or 0.001 < 0.05. Then H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Therefore, based of the findings it can be concluded that the use of Role Playing Games (RPG) is effective to increase students' reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the errors and problems faced by the students in practicing English to Indonesian consecutive interpreting. This study is conducted in an interpreting class of six semester English Letters students of IAIN Surakarta. This study was conducted to know the students’ types of errors and problems in practicing consecutive interpreting. This is a descriptive-qualitative research. It presents the data with a content analysis method. This research uses documentation, error validation, and interviews to answer the research questions. The data were gained by collecting the students’ performance videos in practicing consecutive interpreting and establishing interviews to get additional information. The results showed that among 159 errors, which were occurred during the students’ performances, the errors can be classified into 8 types. They are errors in non-conservation of paralinguistic features, omission, distortion, inadequate language proficiency, literal translation, addition, register conservation, protocol, procedure and ethics. The non-conservation paralinguistic features are the most frequent error with 57 occurrences (35.8%) and the least common error found is protocol, procedure and ethics with 2 occurrences (1.3%). Those errors were caused by the students’ problems. The results show that there are 8 types of problems faced by the students, including nervosity, English proficiency, lack of practice, interpretation partner, classmates, time pressure, confidence and public speaking skills. Overall, the students need more practice and knowledge, especially in English proficiency and need guidance in solving their problems to improve their interpretation skills.

Abstract

Trauma is a condition that arises as a result of a scary experience or event, such as natural disasters, physical violence, sexual harassment, etc. The response caused by trauma is post-traumatic stress disorder, which affects a person's mentality due to the traumatic event he experienced. The purpose of this study is to know the causes and effects of post-traumatic disorders and the types of trauma in general. In this study, the writer used a descriptive-qualitative method. The writer watches the movie and identifies the data, then writes it back in the notebook and categorizes the data based on theory. In this study, the writer found that in the Fallout movie, the symptoms caused by trauma and post-traumatic experiences varied, such as intrusiveness, avoidance, and arousal. As well as the efforts made to get out of trauma, namely by coming to psychology, looking for activities, and being an open person with parents about anything. Hopefully this thesis can educate all of us about the dangers and impact of post-traumatic stress disorder, be useful, and contribute as an analysis of literary works, especially for English and English literature majors.

Abstract

Morphology studies the intricate forms of words and the influence of changes in word forms on word categories and meanings. Morphemes, as the smallest grammatical units with meaning, are the primary focus of morphology. Morphemes cannot be further divided into smaller linguistic units. This research aims to investigate derivational and inflectional morphemes in the lyrics of Calum Scott’s songs in the album “Bridges”. The qualitative method is employed in this study, which reveals the presence of derivational and inflectional morphemes in the lyrics. The analysis demonstrates the existence of various types of derivational and inflectional affixes. Inflectional morphemes, particularly affixes, are found to be more dominant in the lyrics of Calum Scott’s songs in the album “Bridges”. The findings of this research identify 50 derivational and 99 inflectional morphemes. In derivations, 21 types of affixes are discovered, including prefixes such as re-, pre-, a-, sur- and suffixes such as -ent, -le, -ion, -ful, - less, -ing, -ly, -ain, -ed, -ness, -ment, -y, -ry, -er, -ty, -st, and -ical. Furthermore, there are 8 types of inflectional morphemes, namely plural, past tense, past perfect, comparative, possessive, third-person singular, gerund, and progressive.

Abstract

This thesis aims to analysis the use of conceptual metaphors in the songs on the album Petals for Armor by Hayley Williams by focusing on discussing the meaning that is in each song. This study uses a qualitative analysis process on the lyrics chosen based on the use and diversity of metaphors contained in the text of the song lyrics. The data were analysis using a descriptive-analytical approach, which involved identifying and classifying the conceptual metaphors that appear in the lyrics of the song. Based on the results of this thesis analysis, there are 21 conceptual metaphors found in the song lyrics in the Petals for Armor album. The results of the analysis show that the album Petals for Armor contains various types of conceptual metaphors that are used to describe and express the author's experience to be understood by listeners through writing metaphors in each of the song lyrics.

Abstract

English has become an international language, so the mastery of English language skills is important. However, the students still face some problems that make them unmotivated and hinder speaking. Considering these situations and conditions, the teacher must address this challenge and determine the most effective strategy for involving students in the teaching and learning process, particularly in speaking. As a result, YouTube is selected as one of the options for teaching speaking in this article in order to determine how using YouTube to improve students' speaking skills. To find out the use of YouTube video to improve student’s speaking skill, a qualitative approach was used in this research. Qualitative research was utilized to conduct this research. To collect the data for the study, a questionnaire using Google Forms with close-ended questions was utilized. The questionnaire will contain 5 questions that were based on previous research regarding the roles of YouTube in improving English speaking skills. After implementing the action of research, the researcher found that the use of YouTube video in the teaching speaking had enhanced and motivated the students’ speaking English skill.
