Abstract

As part of carbon pools, forest soil stores soil organic matter (SOM) that contains many elements including organic C, N, P, and K. These elements contribute nutrients for biogeochemical cycles within the ecosystem. This study was done to determine the ecological value of forest soil organic matter at tropical evergreen Aglaia-Streblus forest of Meru Betiri National Park (MBNP), East Java, Indonesia. The data were sampled along gradient topography in Pringtali tropical forest of TMBNP. Direct measurements of soil moisture, temperature, and pH were taken in the field. The soil samples were extracted from 6 points of soil solum using soil auger, and then oven-dried to get value of dry-weight. The elements content of organic C, N, P, and K were analyzed and estimated at the laboratory. The ecoval of SOM was appraised using developed ecological valuation tool. The result showed that SOM contributed higher ecoval of organic C (66.03 Mg ha-1) than other elements. Compared to P and K elements, N had the highest stock of element content. However, comparing to other two tropical forest ecosystems of Asia the ecoval of SOM elements in TMBNP was relatively low because of its natural geomorphological features.The ecoval of SOM elements in TMBNP was relatively low because of its natural geomorphological features. The ecovals contributed about 2.440,64 - 6.955,50 USD or  31.271.923,73 - 89.120.837,23  IDR per hectare of ecological value (d) to the ecosystem. This value was mainly contributed by organic C stock in the TMBNP forest SOM. It means the forest SOM had higher element content of organic C than N, P, and K elements. This d value is an indicator for TMBNP to protect the SOM elements meaning protecting their resources to sustain the biogeochemical cycles in the forest ecosystem. All the management and policy correlated to this protected area should consider this valuable information for their plan and actions.

Abstract

Land Suitability and Purposed Land Use of Selaru Island, West-Southeast Moluccas Regency (MP Sirappa, ED Waas and AN Susanto): Research was conducted in Selaru Island, West Southeast Moluccas Regency which has areal 32,217 ha. The purpose of the research was to study land suitability class and directive of land use for developing food crop and estate plant. The results  indicated  that Selaru Island was suitable land (S) for upland rice, corn, peanuts, mungbean, sweet potato, calladium, and coconut which had areal of 28,312 ha, 19,330 ha, 19,330 ha, 19,330 ha, 19,330 ha, 28,312 ha, and 12,886 ha, respectively.  Land which was not suitable creteria (N) for upland rice, corn, peanuts, mungbean, sweet potato, calladium, coconut, and cacao were 3,905 ha, 12,887 ha, 12,887 ha, 12,887 ha, 12,887 ha, 3,905 ha, 19,331 ha, and 32,217 ha, respectively. Llimiting factors of land use for dryland food crop and estate plant in survey location were high temperature, root media (shallow soil solum), retention of nutrient (rather alkaline - until alkaline), medium erosion level and terrain (wavies, rock at soil surface and rock outcrop). Purposed  land use for food crop dyland and estate plant based on land suitability class were (1) public coconut estate with main commodity coconut in the areal of 1,947 ha, (2) food crop dryland-1 with main commodities corn, mungbean, purplish edible tuber, and calladium with a wide was 5,299 ha, (3) food crop dryland-2 with main commodities upland rice, purplish edible tuber, and calladium in the areal of was 8,982 ha, and (4) food crop dryland-3 with main commodities peanuts and mungbean in the areal of 14,031 ha

Abstract

Landform of Gunungsewu karst topography dominated by positive forms consists of hills and negative forms of dolines. On the micro toposequen of karst,   most of dolines dominated by red soils which hue 2.5 YR – 5 YR, whereas on hills by soils which hue 5 YR – 7.5 YR. The aim of research was to study of soil minerals status on karst micro toposequent. Results showed that soil minerals of sand fraction on dolines dominated by quartz, opaque, and iron concretion, whereas on hills dominated by labradorite, and mafic minerals. Clay minerals on doline dominated by kaolinite whereas on hills by halloysite. The high concentration of kaolinite, quartz, opaque and iron concretions of soils on dolines appropriate with degree of  soil weathering  which in a line with decreasing of soil pH, silt/ clay ratio, and  hue of soils on dolines redder than hue of soils on hills.  The origin of soil parent material suggested come from volcanic materials.

Abstract

A field experiment was conducted on an Arenic paleudult in the rainforest zone of Southern Nigeria to determine the response of an improved variety of peanut (Arachis hypogea L. var. Samnut 23) to phosphorus, under different land preparation methods. Selected land preparation methods were “slash and burn” (SB) and “slash and mulch” (SM), and the phosphate fertilizer rates were 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg P ha-1.  The experiment was laid out as a randomized complete by block design. Each land preparation was divided into plots. Macro- and micro nutrient contents of peanut plants were determined, and the growth and yield components were also assessed. Results showed that the pre planting soil analysis for the SB management had a pH of 5.77, N (1.8 gkg-1), P (2.05 mgkg-1) and K (0.11cmol (+) kg-1), while that of the SM had a pH of 5.95, N (0.9 g kg-1), P (0.86 mg kg-1) and K (0.07cmol(+)kg-1).  Plant height was not significantly different (pd” 0.05) in the land preparation methods, but leaf area was significantly different. However, plant height and leaf area responded better under the SB treatment with 90 kg P ha-1 rate of phosphorus fertilizer than the SM treatment under the same rate. Fresh pod weight of 908.6kg ha-1 and dry pod weight of 558.0kg ha-1 was obtained at 60 kg P ha-1 under the SB treatment and was significantly different from all other treatments including the SM. Significant differences were also observed in the nutrient concentrations of leaves and roots. Highest leaf phosphorus content (3.502 mg kg-1) was recorded at 90kg P ha-1 in the SM treatment while the highest nutrient content of P in the roots (0.272 mg kg-1) was recorded at 30 kg P ha-1 also in the SM treatment. However, the SB treatment recorded the highest peanut seed pods / shell at 60 kg P ha-1. Abstract

Effectivity of the Earthworms Pheretima  hupiensis, Eudrellus sp. and Lumbricus sp. on the Organic Matter  Decomposition Process (E.K. Anwar): The earthworms  are the one of soil fauna  component in  soil ecosystem have an important role in organic matter decomposition procces. The earthworm feed  plant leaf  and plant matter up to apart and dissolved.  Earthworm  metabolisms  produce like faeces that mixed with decomposed organic matter  mean vermicompost. The vermicompost fertility varies because of some kind of earthworm differ in “niche”  and attitude. The experiment was to study the effectivity of earthworm  on organic matter decomposition which has been conducted in Soil Biological and Healthy Laboratory and Green House of Soil Research Institute Bogor, during 2006 Budget Year. The three kind of earthworms i.e  Pheretima hupiensis, Lumbricus sp. and Eudrellus sp. combined with three kind of organic matter sources i.e rice straw, trash and  palm oil plant waste (compost heap). The result shows that the Lumbricus sp.  are the most effective decomposer compared to Pheretima hupiensis and Eudrellus sp. and the organic matter decomposed by  Lumbricus sp. as followed:  market waste was decomposed of 100%, palm oil empty fruit bunch (compost heap) 95.8 % and rice straw 84.9%,  respectively. Earthworm effectively decreased Fe, Al, Mn, Cu dan Zn.

Abstract

The study of the external hyphae of AMF was conducted for getting data of the soil hyphae distribution from the observation using thin section preparation. The experiment was arranged in factorial fully randomized design. The 1st factors are dosages of P application: 0; 45; 90; 135; and 180 kg ha-1.  The second factor was AMF spore inoculation: with inoculation and without inoculation.  The observations were conducted to roots and shoots oven dried, absorption of P, P32- fertilizer and P31 from soil.  The soil was separated from T-pots and to prepare for making the thin section of soil for observation to hyphae distribution at every 2 cm level.  The experiment results showed that the prepared of thin section was documented at the 200 µm x 200 µm (= 40.000 µm2) dimension can be used for external hifas observation.  In the 400 µm2 areas of soil without AMF inoculated has about 24 to 27 external hyphal, so at the  40.000 µm2 areas has 2.400 until 2.700 hyphae.  The soil was AMF inoculated has 19 to 25 hyphae at  400 µm2 areas of soil, and in the 40.000 µm2 areas has  1.900 until 2.500 hyphae and the length of hyphae about 67-75 m g-1.  The diameter hifas at soil without AMF inoculation about 8-10 µm, and at the soil with AMF inoculated has hyphae diameter about 8-11 µm, and the long of hyphae about 53-69 m g-1.  The growth speed of hyphae about 0.74-0.89 m day-1 or about 0.031-0.035 m hour-1.  The inoculated plant with AMF spore gave more in contribution to P32 fertilizer and soil P31 than that in uninoculated plant, but the yield of shoot and root oven dried was higher for plants without inoculated AMF spore.  The inoculated soil with spore of AMF caused to sum of AMF spore and soil P availability was higher than that in uninoculated soil.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to study the decline of organic functional group through the process of burning in peat. In addition, this study was also to examine the relationship between water content in peat and organic functional group after combustion (burning).  Peat drying was conducted in an oven at a temperature of 75°C with the interval of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 hours.  Each time interval had three replicates within two sets of experiments so that the total number of samples were 42 (experimental units).  Variables measured were moisture content, total acidity, COOH groups, and OH-phenolate.  The relationship between the water content with total acidity, COOH groups and OH-phenolate were determined by the equation y = bx + a.  The results showed that the relationship between the water content with organic functional group was linear.  While the relationship between peat water content with organic functional group after burning was irregular, although water levels through the process of burning have been greatly reduced. Keywords: Burning peat; organic functional groups; water content [How to Cite: Said R, FH Yusran, A Haris and S Asmawi. 2014. Abstract

Turnover of organic matters to the soil can increase the efficiency of chemical fertilizers, improve the plant growth and sustain the environment. Field experiment was carried out in the Buyut Udik Village, Gunung Sugih District, Central Lampung from May to August 2009.  Rice straw was composted by three kinds of decomposer (bioactivator A, B, and C). Rice straw compost (2 Mg ha-1) was applied to the paddy-field soil that was planted by rice (Oryza sativa) of Ciherang Variety. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with three replicates. The results showed that application of rice straw compost reduced the numbers of empty grain per tiller compared to control (without compost) in which control had the highest percentage of empty grain (15.9%). The application of rice straw compost that was decomposed by bioactivator A gave the highest numbers of grain per panicle and yield per plot as followed 162.5 seed and 33 kg plot-1, respectively.  Application of various rice straw composts that were decomposed by three kinds of bioactivator increased the rice grain up to 13-26% compared to control.

Abstract

Increasing of “Keprok” Citrus Production in the Andisols of Karo by a Local Compound Fertilizers (E Tuherkih and Sukristiyonubowo): The improvement of “keprok” citrus production in term of quantity and quality depends on soil properties and fertilization.  Many factors affected efectiveness and efficiency of fertilizers i.e. soil, climate, plant species, growth period of plant, plant productivity, and type and rate of fertilizers. Study on the effect of SUMUT-1 and SUMUT-2 compound fertilizers on keprok citrus production was carried out in Sukadame Village, Tanah Karo District from January to December 2008. The purpose of the research were to evaluate the effectiveness of new compound fertilizer SUMUT-1 and SUMUT-2 on leaf nutrient content, quality and quantity production of “keprok” citrus as well as to determine the optimum rate of SUMUT-1 dan SUMUT-2. Ten treatments were tested and arranged into a randomized completely block design with three replications. The fertilizer application rates of SUMUT 1 and SUMUT 2 were 400, 550, 700, dan 850 kg-1ha-1year-1, meanwhile dosages of fertilizer recomended application of NPK originated from single fertiliser namely urea, SP-36, and KCl and farmer practice were used as control.  The results indicated that application of SUMUT-1 and SUMUT-2 were more effective than fertilizers coming from single NPK fertilizer with RAE value >100%. Furthermore, SUMUT-1 was better than SUMUT-2 in improving N, P, K contents in citrus leaf. The optimum application rate of SUMUT-1 was 700 kg-1ha-1year-1 reaching the citrus production of 36,29 Mg-1  ha-1  year-1 with fruit grade of about  51% AB and 49% CD. These matched with the SPO (Standard Procedure Operation) for citrus of about 20 Mg-1 ha-1 year-1.

Abstract

Tin mining produces a by-product sand tailing from soil leaching with characteristic low pH and total organic carbon, and can be reclaimed by providing a suitable ameliorant.  When available in situ, ameliorant materials can be economically used as they are required in large amounts. Fortunately, Bangka Belitung has sample stock of such kaolinite-rich minerals that can be utilized for improving soil chemical properties. Extracted organic materials, such as humic substances, can also be utilized as they influence the complex soil reactions, and promote plant growth. Thus, this study aimed to assess the effects of mineral, humic materials and interaction of both material on soil chemical properties and nutrient uptake of Pennisetum purpureum Schumach. A completely randomized design with 2 factors and 3 replications each was employed. Factor 1 was mineral matter is 0; 420; 840; 1.260 Mg ha-1 while Factor 2 was humic material is 0; 0.46; 0.92; 1.38 kg C ha-1. Air-dried samples of tailing were applied with oil palm compost then mixed evenly with mineral and humic materials.  Penissetum purpureum Schumach was planted after 4 weeks incubation, and maintained for another 4 weeks. The results demonstrated that the addition of mineral matter significantly increased soil organic carbon content, total N, exchangeable K, Fe, Mn and boosted nutrient - total Ca, Mg and Mn – uptake of the plant. But the application of humic material increased only soil organic carbon content. The interaction of both materials only lowered soil pH.
