Abstract

This study, which was guided by three research questions, used the qualitative method of a case study to explore the level of implementation of the academic probation policy in North-Western Nigeria, and how it impacted on academic performance of students. The population for this study included examination officers. The population is not intended to statistically represent a group on campus but is instead a group of individuals who shared a specific educational experience. Data was collected through interviews with Examination officers in the selected colleges and analyzed using the thematic data analysis technique. Findings of the study revealed that the colleges are implementing probation on students whose CGPA is less than 1:00 point in line with NCCE probation policy. It further revealed that the implementation of probation has positively impacted the probating students by making them work harder to remedy their deficiencies, improve their performances and subsequently pass their examinations to meet their graduation requirements. The study also found out that most of the probating students see probation as a punishment, a very difficult process, and an unpleasant situation. The study, therefore, recommended that Guidance and Counselling Units of colleges of education should always guide probating students on the importance of the policy for the improvement of their academic performances, and colleges of education should always make sure that experienced and qualified lecturers handle students on probation.

Abstract

Teaching aids play a vital role in the teaching and learning process. Teaching aids are crucial in helping students comprehend learning theory. However, most existing counter application trainers as teaching aids in digital electronics courses are developed without following the syllabus in vocational colleges and come at a high price. This study aimed to develop a counter application as teaching aids in digital electronics courses to provide low-cost teaching aids tailored to the curriculum at vocational colleges. This quantitative research applied the Life Development System (SDLC) model. This study developed a counter application trainer for teaching the Electronic and Digital Application course in vocational colleges. The findings showed that the product has been validated by experts based on the product design, suitability, and functionality. Further investigation could be conducted by looking into the trainer's safety features, such as adding a cap to the transformer's supply circuit and the on/off switch. Electric shock can be avoided with this cover.

Abstract

Recent studies show limited research on the development of learning media that effectively addresses critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity(4C) characteristics. However, there is an urge for nurturing the 4C characters of vocational high school graduates in the 21st Century, especially critical thinking. Hence, this study aims to develop and discover the feasibility, usability, and effectiveness of critical thinking-based interactive learning media for Basic Mechanical Engineering. This study used the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) development concept. The information design in developing the learning media was based on critical thinking aspects by Facione in ATC21S. The critical-thinking-based interactive learning media (CTBILM) were developed for mobile learning which can be used in IOS and Android. The alpha test showed promising results, especially from material experts. In addition to that, the User Acceptance Test (UAT) also shown a significant score making CTBILM quite feasible. We also argue that the significant change in student critical thinking from the statistical t-test on pretest and posttest are due to CTBILM.
