Abstract

Deaf students’ learning characteristics should be accommodated in their teaching and learning material. This article reported the results from the preliminary implementation of learning media for teaching mathematics to deaf students. The developed media consist of verbal and nonverbal communication, and implementation results suggested that there was students’ preferential difference in responding to a particular type of communication. Further research with large scale samples is still needed to determine the effect of the media in improving deaf students’ mathematics achievement and how preference in a learning mode influences mathematics achievement.

Abstract

Three tier test is one of the instruments which can be used to detect conception level of the students. This developed-three tier test instrument consists of three levels of question. The first tier is multiple choice, the second tier is reason to choose the answer, and the third tier is affirmative question about the belief of the answers chosen on the first and second tier. An instrument can be used as it well-qualified; that can be seen from its validity and reliability value.  One of the methods that used to measure the instrument’s validity is Content Validity Ratio (CVR) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) while a method that used to measure the instrument’s reliability is cronbach test.  The quality of tree tier instrument test, based on CVR result in an average 0.64, indicates that the instrument had owned conformity content with the measured-domain, and CFA in a MSA-average 0.805, indicates that the instrument had been valid and can develop the construct that measured in accordance with the developed-indicators as well as the three tier instrument’s reliability in Cronbach’s Alpha value 0.927 insists that the three tier instrument that developed has a quite good reliability value. Among 27 instruments that had been analyzed, 12 instruments of them considered valid based on CVR and CFA examination result.

Abstract

Mental model plays an important role in giving reasons, describing, explaining, predicting, testing new ideas, and solving problems. Research on the mental model still needs to be done, especially regarding acid-base which is revealed by using Interview About Event (IAE). The purpose of this study was to analyze the students' mental models on the Arrhenius acid-base concept, the concept of Brӧnsted-Lowry acid base, and acid-base strength. The study was conducted on six students of class XII IPA in one high school in Bandung by using interviews that ask students to explain the given phenomenon. The answers of each student are mapped so as to derive their mental model profile. Based on the pattern obtained, there is found misconception experienced by students that all substances having atom H or OH group on chemical formula is Arrhenius acid or base, proton transfer on acid-base reaction Brӧnsted-Lowry occurs from acid to its conjugate base or from base to conjugate acid , The arrow of the reaction both in the perfect ionisation reaction and the partial ionization reaction is the same ie the arrow one (), the solute particles present in the solution in the ionizing agent are only partially ions (in the absence of molecules). Findings are useful for developing learning strategies, textbooks, media and other learning tools by linking the different levels of chemical representation to build meaning so that students' understanding is better. Keywords: acid basa, Interview About Event (IAE), misconception, mental model.
