Abstract

Although Japanese society is known as a collective society, basically, Japanese self-existence is not merging with itscommunity as it is. Japanese characteristics that are oriented to the community – as they are reflected in their vertical society concept and how people differentiate the concept of uchi / soto – do not eliminate Japanese self-existence nor their individualistic. This writing describes about Japanese self-existence in their language by considering the following factors: predicates psychological, addressing and kinship, honorofic and polite expresion, donatory verb, the pronoun jibun, and private/public expression. It can be said that, in order to describe about Japanese self-existence, it is important to identify their absolute/relational self and public/private expression. Keywords: Japanese self-existence, uchi/soto, absolute/relationalself, psychological predicates, Pronoun Jibun

Formalism is one of the approaches aimed at finding out what and why the motor of the story works in the literary texts. Daphne du Maurier’s was analyzed using the formalism approach. The main character obsession is the one that runs the story, which arouses various conflicts among characters. Abstract

Responding to questions is an important skill to develop.Sometimes students cannot give suitable responses to somespecific questions. In order to be able to give suitable response to a question students have to understand what a given questionexpects. Failing to anticipate what the question asks will lead thestudents to give unsuitable response. Giving feedback to thestudents in anticipating what a question asks is believed to be able to improve their abilities to respond to the questions appropriately. I conducted classroom research on the teacher’s feedback to improve the students’ question-response skill in my listening class in EFL setting. Sixty-nine participants were the fourthsemester students taking Listening IV in 2005. They were asked to listen to and answer the recorded oral questions taken from a standardized model test. The test results were evaluated and the researcher gave feedback to the students by giving the key and discussing the case specific to each question item. After giving teacher’s feedback, the participants were asked to listen and respond to a number of questions and the result, again, wereevaluated. This cycles were iterated for 3 times. The teacher’sfeedback comprises sound recognition, guessing the word’s orphrase’s meaning, and grammar. The research findings showed significant improvement on the students’ question-response skill indicated by the increased mean score especially after implementing the third cycle. Keywords: feedback, action research, cycles, sound recognition, meaning, grammar
