Abstract

Ngalaksa ceremony is an expression of thankfulness to the God for His gift allowing the the rice harvest. The ceremony is conducted by six villagers in district Rancakalong Sumedang regency and lasts six days and nights with the accompaniment of tarawangsa and jentreng music played countinously. This ceremony is held once in a year following the rice harvest and at the same time regarded as the preparation of the next plant season. Apart from the thankfulness expression, ngalaksa is also considered as an honour of people toward Dewi Sri (the rice Goddess) and as a meeting and communicating arena of the people. Ngalaksa is commenced with the making of laksa (a kind of porrage made of the rice flour, wrapped with congkok leaves {a sort of leaves similar to coconut leaves}, which have been steamed before). The certain people believe that if the number of laksa packages is more than those in the last year, the result of harvest in the next year would be better. There are usually hundreds o/laksa distributed to all participants of the ceremony. The process of making laksa spends four to five days. In the seventh day, regarded as the ultimate days, there is an activity to get the rice into the barn (lumbung) as a symbol of getting rice back to the higher place. At that time, the participants dance with spontaneous movement that is accompanied with tarawangsa am/jentreng music. They are sure that at the time, ancestor spirits including Dewi Sri get down to the earth and dance together with them.

Abstract

An Impression of the Silence of Sounds is the title of a musical composition that put emphasis on the silence in either a sensible or insensible reality. The phenomenon of sounds as both real and not-real is attempted to be expressed through this composition, after going through the stages of scientific study of acoustics (as represented in symbols) and imagination. This composition was inspired by the works of musical composition and natural phenomena that are identical to silence itself. This musical work was realized, first, through some processes or methods, such as initial stimulation, ideation, exploration, improvisation, and formation that ended up in presentation. The composition intends to integrate two musical media; of Western and Eastern (Gamelans). Moreover, it encompassing all three movements; adagio, allegro, and returns to the beginning of the adagio section. In its own context, the composition represents an affirmation of the existence of sounds in a silence as has been demonstrated in natural science disciplines. Further, it attempts to criticize public perception that the beauty of art is solely a sensual pleasure. Keywords: Impression, Silence, Sounds, acoustics, imagination.

Abstract

Sialang is an ethnical music performance inspired by honey bees collecting nectars. The idea evolved into a concept of life that comprises three elements of the interacting and interdependent creatures. Sialang is a tree that shelters the bees until they produce honey; from early life into adulthood, they are persistent to deal with natural selection and to survive amidst the challenges they are facing such as bad weather, attacks from other animals, and uncertain climate. From the life they had never live before until the life with full of threats to their survival. Therefore, human, plant and animal should establish a mutually beneficial life in order to realize a harmonious life. Such phenomenon is manifested because of the tangle of three elements that play a major role in fostering a mutually beneficial relationship. The one and the other elements are welded together to form a unified whole. This phenomenon can be expressed in the form of intertwining circles as the food chain that works on a cyclical basis in an ecosystem.   Keywords: honey, concept of life, Sialang.
