Abstract

West Java as a national manufacturing center has experienced industrialization since 1989. This is marked by the continuous increase in the manufacturing sector so that it is able to shift other sectors. Unfortunately, the industrialization that occurred in West Java was not followed by a reduction in the manufacturing labor productivity in West Java. The convergence of manufacturing labor productivity in West Java is an important phenomenon because inequality can lead to a different pace of development and exacerbate inequality. This study uses dynamic panel data regression with the first-different GMM (FD-GMM) method for inferential analysis and Location Quotient (LQ), Klassen Typology and the calculation of the coefficient of variation for descriptive analysis. The results showed that only 7 out of 27 regencies/cities in West Java had the economy dominated by the manufacturing sector and there were fluctuations in the productivity of the manufacturing workforce in these areas. Based on Klassen's Typology, there are still many areas that are categorized as developing and underdeveloped areas. However, there is a decrease in inequality between regions as seen from the results of the convergence analysis. Sigma convergence and beta convergence occurred in West Java with the time needed to close half the gap (half-life convergence) of less than one year. Factors that significantly affect the convergence process of manufacturing labor productivity are the manufacturing labor productivity lag, FDI, DDI, and real wages of manufacturing workers.

Abstract

A high per capita electricity consumption in developed countries is also correlated with high numbers on the human development index. Several studies show the relationship between the level of electricity consumption on economic growth and vice versa. This study aims to explore the relationship between electricity consumption, Human Development Index (HDI), and inflation to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per Capita in ASEAN 5 countries. Using the simultaneous equation for the period 2012 to 2010 with the indirect least squares (ILS) analysis technique, it is found that electrical energy consumption has a positive effect on GDP per capita but HDI (Human Development Index) does not significantly affect GDP per Capita in ASEAN 5 countries. Meanwhile, the obtained inflation variable does not affect GDP per Capita. Then, we develop the second model and third model to test the impact on GDP per capita, electricity per capita, and HDI. The second model HDI as the dependent variable is influenced by the level of electricity consumption per capita and GDP per capita. This result proves that HDI is not influenced significantly by GDP per capita but is influenced by electricity consumption per capita. The third model shows empirical evidence that GDP per capita and HDI affect the level of electricity consumption. The policy implication is that electricity consumption will increase along with the increase in economic growth. The government must be able to increase supply to fulfill the rising electricity demand.

Abstract

The unexpected Covid-19 crisis presents major challenges to Malaysian’s revenue administrator due to worsening economic conditions as they anticipated growing in tax arrears, loss reporting by business and increasing in tax non-compliance and tax evasion. Therefore the objective of this study is to investigate the impact of the crisis on tax compliance and look at the willingness of the taxpayer to ensure the survival of the country while they themselves are facing financial uncertainty due to the pandemic. Adopting convenient sampling method, a survey was conducted among taxpayers in the south region of Malaysia. The findings show that 28.6% of respondents have deferred their tax e-filing and tax payment during the Covid-19 crisis. Nevertheless, those who have filed, make an early submission with intention to get tax refund in facing potential income reduction. Interestingly, 59.3% of respondents are still willing to pay tax, during and after the Covid-19 period at same marginal tax rate. In conclusion, this study provides important input to the tax administrator on the likelihood of future shortfalls in tax collection and suggests how to minimize the anticipated negative effects of the pandemic.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the economic potential of the agriculture, plantation, fisheries, tourism, and trade sectors in Central Lolada. This research is a descriptive study using primary data analysis through interviews with all village heads. In order to raise village competitiveness, mapping of local potential needs to identify and explore potential that can be done by the community it self so that it will be appropriate in village development because the village as a government (head and community) clearly understands the potential of both natural resources and available human resources. The results show that the plantation sector is the main commodity produced, while the fishery sector is still very concerned and needs a touch of policy. For the tourism sector, there is only one tourist destination managed by the government. Meanwhile, for the trade sector, it is dominated by household scale industries. The Covid-19 pandemic doesn't really interfere with people's production activities, there is only the trade sector because it's limited by policy.

Abstract

A possible solution to overcome the dilemma between trade openness and the environment can be done by adjusting the factors that might affect the environmental performance index. However, this can only be done if there is an established relationship between the influencing factors. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of trade openness, energy, technology, and population on the environmental performance index in Sub-Saharan Africa. This type of research is a quantitative research using panel data regression analysis tool. Trade openness, energy, and population have a positive and significant influence on the environmental performance index in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Abstract

The Hybrid New Keynesian Philips Curve (HNKPC) is an update of the Philips Curve. HNKPC discusses the combination of forward looking and backward looking on the inflation rate. In this case, the shock of the inflation rate to the unemployment rate will be analyzed according to the HNKPC. The dynamics of inflation used from the monetary policy aspect is the inflation targeting framework (ITF). This research will also combine the inflation rate of various elements in the new consensus macroeconomic framework in ASEAN-3 as an up-to-date research idea. The object of analysis used is ASEAN-3 covering Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand. The method used in this research is Structural Vactor Autoregression (SVAR) in the first quarter of 2000 – 4th quarter of 2021. The results of the SVAR find that inflation fluctuations are backward looking and forward looking in accordance with the HNKPC concept of the full unemployment rate in Indonesia, according to some in Thailand and not in the Philippines. The ITF is a monetary policy whose annual inflation target is determined by the central bank in accordance with the new consensus macroeconomic perspective
