Abstract

This research develops the ability in generic thinking to the future physics teachersthrough modern physics learning such as: understanding in sense of scale andsymbolic languages, doing inference, comprehending causality, and doingmathematics modeling. The subject of the research was teacher students who tookmodern physics in third semester. They were encouraged to be actively involved in thelearning process individually in the classroom and was assigned indepedent tasksoutside the class by relying on the resources on the Internet. The result of the researchshowed a significant improvement on five generic capabilities for high GPA groupand four generic capabilities for low GPA group. The only one skill that did notimprove is capability in doing mathematics modeling for low GPA group. It issuggested that there is an expansion of the implementation of physics learning whichis oriented towards the development of generic thinking, including its subskills.Kata kunci: berpikir generik, fisika modern, mahasiswa calon guru

Abstract

This study departed from the fact that often teachers find difficulties in selectingappropriate materials. It is assumed that the students low grade in basic competenceto write short story is attributed to their poor ability and motivation to write as well asthe teachers poor selection of learning materials. In response to this situation, thepresent study developed a book specifically designed to improve the students abilityto write a short story. To bring this aim into practice this project took 30 junior highschool students and 6 teachers of three junior high schools of Pekalongan District,Central Java. All were purposively selected. Following research and developmentmodel of research suggested by Borg and Gall (cited in Sukmadinata 2008:169), thisstudy found that: (1) in terms of the profile of the book, the students were interestednot only in its interesting cover but also in its handy form. Besides, it used easilyunderstood language and the price was reasonable; (2) the experts examinationshowed that the prototype of the book could feasibly be used for supporting theteachers instructional practice; and (3) the book was effective to support teachersinstructions. This study is preliminary in nature however, and therefore a furthercomprehensive study is needed in the future to fill in the gap this study may still leave.Kata Kunci : menulis cerpen, buku panduan, siswaSMP

Abstract

Compared to other literary works, drama is the most unique one. It is based on thedefinition that drama is made to be performed. For the reader, these images of actioncome to life when we interact with the combination of dialogues and stage directionswe call a script. The printed page does not make drama itself. The activating ingredientis our living response to what we read. And the two most important resources we haveas readers are our powers of imagination and empathy. Drama analysis as one of thesubjects learned in a university has become a class that is tiresome and timeconsuming.Students often do not enjoy or even understand the text. It is due to themethod of learning which focuses on the structural elements of the text. To avoid suchconstraint there are two alternative approaches provided by the writer, they are readerresponse and intertextuality. Those two methods are the combination of readers, text, and how the readers respond to the text. They can be applied as a solution of studentsboredom in a drama analysis class. By using the approach of reader response andintertextuality students can enjoy the class more than before and even be able toperform all the skills of response such as describing, engaging, explaining, interpreting, connecting, as well as judging. The provided activities require thestudents to develop their sensitivity in analyzing a drama by using their imagination, empathy, sympathy, antipathy, feeling and thought.Kata Kunci : resepsi sastra, intertekstualitas, drama analysis, membaca drama

Abstract

Drama for teaching English for elementary school students is a real communicationinvolving ideas, emotions, feelings, and adaptations. Drama in young learners (YL)classrooms allows shy students to “hide behind” the character when they speakEnglish. There are some reasons underlying the use of drama for teaching English toyoung learners: (a) Drama helps children to activate language and have fun. Itencourages children to speak and allows to communicate, even with limited language, using nonverbal communication, such as body movements and facial expressions; (b)Drama is familiar to children. Dramatizing has been a part of childrens lives sincetheir early age. They pretend to be adults in situations that are close to the reality. Theyalso behave as adults when they play their roles; (c) Drama helps children build theirconfidence. It means that by taking on a role, children can escape from everydayidentity. This is useful for children who are reluctant to use English or who do not likeworking in groups; (d) Drama dynamically nurtures childrens cooperative ability in agroup.Kata Kunci : drama, media pengajaran, young learners
