Abstract

AbstractThe period of nation-building following Indonesia’sindependence is still little documented. The creationof Bali’s tourist industry during the colonial period isbetter documented that the re-creation of the industry inthe post-War period. This period is important because itwas Balinese who became the main agents of the rebornindustry. The industry was built on three main pillars, theprovision of accommodation, the creation of souvenirsthrough the “Artshops”, and the creation of itineraries.Building on the remnants of the colonial period, Balineseresponded to interactions with a number of key Westernfigures, using them as guides to Western tastes and needs.Although the strategy of “Cultural Tourism” is usuallyascribed to the Suharto era, it was a product of Balineseagency in the period between 1950 and 1971.

Data was collected by literature study, non-participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and surveys. They were nalyzed by habitus theory and the product planning theory. Abstract

Mortuary practices might have represented social stratification during the prehistoric period in Bali. Disposal treatment of the decease, burial goods, and containers that were utilized for burials may correspond with social identity and social persona of the deads and their family. This article will explore social stratification on the basis of  burial systems and burial goods that were utilized during the prehistoric period in Bali. Field survey and study on documents have also been done for data collection. In addation, Postprocessual theory has been applied in this study. It seems that global contacts and access for exotic goods might have stimulated the ranked or social stratification during prehistoric period in Bali. Metal objects, which raw materials are absence in Bali, including stone and glass beads, gold foil eye covers that were utilized as burial goods might have represent a status symbol during prehstoric period in Bali. Local elits in Bali utilized material objects as well as burial systems as a symbol for social differentiation and hierarchies in the soceity. Abstract

AbstractThis paper discusses two novels and two short storiesby examining modern teacher’s characters by Balinese fictional authors. These four literary works are a novelin Balinese language entitled Bukit Buung Bukit Mentik (Buung and Mentik Hills) by Agung Wiyat S Ardhi, a novel in Indonesian language Senja di Candi Dasa (Twilight inCandi Dasa) by Aryantha Soethama, and two short stories in Balinese language Sertifikat(si) (A Certificate (ion)” by I Made Lewis, and Ngabdi (Serving) by I Nyoman Alit Suwarbawa. By reading them in parallel way, these four works offiction are analyzed using the theory of New Historicism. It is found that the images of teacher characters in the writers mind are identical with that in real life. The teacher characters in these four stories seem to have changed from that of the traditional images of the past. Then, teachers were described as wise, knowledgeable and idealistic men. These kind of quality only are found in the Bukit Buung Bukit Menti. Where as, in Senja di Candi Dasa, Sertifikat(si) and Ngabdi, such moral fibers are changing because of the increasingly glamorous lifestyle. The analysis also concludes that these fictions andfacts appear together, complementing one another. If fictions are a story and facts are history, then both appear simultaneously.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the trade networks and dynamics of maritime history in the waters of Bali, especially in the 19th century. There is an interesting aspect in the study of maritime history in Bali namely the importance of Benoa Bay marine area to be the entrance to Bali since many centuries ago. Benoa Bay region directly opposite the Indian Ocean is also associated with Lombok and Bali Straits that become the entry point of the sea trade between Asia and Australia. The study used historical and ethnographic methods. The historical method as well as ethnographic were used to discuss maritime cultural dynamics to the community around the region of Benoa Bay of Bali waters. The results showed that Benoa Bay area turned into the arena of cultural interactions resulting in he mixed culture (mestizo) which produces a different customs from other regions. The occurrence of cross-cultural and civilization contacts put this region as a typical region or special zones outside the sphere of Islamization as the Sea of Civilization.

Abstract

AbstractRecent decades have seen a shift in Balinese sensibilitiesregarding the use of the island’s traditional script, andof the texts that are written in that script; and this shiftappears to be linked to a series of wider-reaching changesin the way people set about embodying, cultivating andcontesting shared ideals of agency, community and thecollective good.1 That is to say there seems to be a linkbetween, on the one hand, the material practices of scriptand writing and, on the other, broader styles of what Iwould call social and practical reasoning. I wish to suggestthat this empirical observation may have some ratherimportant implications for how we think about culturalpreservation, and perhaps especially the challengesfacing those working to safeguard the future of Balineselanguage, script and literature. I would like to present thisargument with specific reference to the idea of ‘languageendangerment’, not only on account of its prominence incurrent debates on language and cultural heritage, but alsoas the questions it raises have special bearing on the issues at stake in contemporary Bali. The recent controversy overthe place of Balinese language instruction in the NationalCurriculum offers a useful way into the problem.
