Abstract

AbstractTeacher‟s questioning may function to assist students comprehend more reading materials and to enable them to be proficient readers. Yet, the students may be less benefited from which if the teacher neither provides sufficient explicit reading strategy nor involves higher-level questions. Consequently, the teacher should pay more careful attention on the followings: 1) the teacher should involve both lower-, and higher-level questions; 2) the teacher should equip students with explicit reading strategy; 3) the teacher should be aware of the activities should be executed in reading phases: pre-, during-, and post-reading.Keywords: lower- and higher-level questions, explicit reading strategy, and reading phases

Abstract

AbstractThe objectives of this research were (1) to know about the students’ ability in writing recount text after being taught without using wh-question as teaching guidance, (2) To know the students’ ability in writing recount text after being taught by using Wh-question as teaching guidance, and (3) To know whether there is a significant improvement of the students’ ability in writing recount text who taught by using wh-question.The hypothesis of the research are (1) There is no significant improvement of the students’ ability in writing recount text who taught by using wh-question (H0) and (2) There is a significant improvement of the students’ ability in writing recount text who taught by using wh-question (H1).This research is using an experimental design and quantitative method. In collecting the data, the researcher used pre-test and post-test. The hypothesis was tested by using t-test.The research findings have shown the result of control class which is their average score at pre-test is 55, 51. Then, their score at post test is 60, 89. Meanwhile, the result of experimental class showed an improvement score from 55, 7 at pre-test and became 69, 28 at post-test.By seeing the result of hypothesis testing, it is gained that at the significant level of 0.05 (5%) t-ratio (4.09) is higher than t-table (2.00) or 4.09 > 2.00, so that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Therefore, the hypothesis of this research is proved.Key words: Writing recoun-text, wh-question, experimental design.

Abstract

AbstractThere are some skills must be achieved to have capability in using English well, such as structure, listening, reading, writing and speaking.Reading is a productive capability which can combine many activities and achievements in language art, it is also essential in education and occupation, because most of informations and references are written in English. One can be a good reader if he has motivation to read and know how to use the strategy in reading activity.The students usually read the text carefully and try to translate all words in the text to understand reading materials, they waste their time and don’t have enough time to answer the questions based on the text, especially when they are doing a test. Worse than that, they often misunderstand the text because they translate the words in the text one by one.This research presents a reading strategy, that is skimming. Using this strategy, it is hoped that the students can read fast and get more informations in a text, that they can answer the questions based on the text quickly and correctly.This research is done towards the second semester students of Education and Teachers’ Training Faculty of State Institute for Islamic Studies Raden Intan Lampung. Research methodology used is experiment method with factorial design 2x2 and held in 8 times of meeting, 2 x 45 minutes for each.After doing the hypothesis, the results are:(1) Reading comprehension of students who are taught by using skimming strategy is better than those who are taught by using scanning strategy. (2) Reading comprehension of higher reading interest students who are taught by using skimming strategy is better than lower reading interest ones. (3) Reading comprehension of lower reading interest students who are taught by using scanning strategy is better than lower reading interest ones. (4) Reading comprehension of higher reading interest students who are taught by using skimming strategy is better than those who are taught by using scanning strategy. (5) Reading comprehension of lower interest students who are taught by using scanning strategy is better than those who are taught by using skimming strategy. It is easier for them to answer the questions by finding certain facts or information in the text than understanding the whole text. (6) There is a significant influence of reading strategy and reading interest towards students’ reading comprehension.The conclusions of this research are:(1) It is effective to use skimming strategy in teaching reading process to increase students’ reading comprehension. (2) Reading interest is influenced students’ reading comprehension, the higherer their interests in reading the better they can get the comprehension. (3) It will be more effective to teach higher interest students by using skimming strategy because they are trained to comprehen the whole text quickly without reading each word in the text. (4) Generally, reading comprehension of students who are taught by using skimming strategy is better than those who are taught by using scanning strategy. But as a matter of fact, scanning strategy is effective to increase reading comprehension for lower interest students. Because by using this strategy, they are trained to reach where the needed information in the text quickly, so if they read questions based on the text, they can find the answer fast. (5) Students’ reading comprehension is depend on what strategy the use and how high the interest they have to read. If they use the right strategy and have high interest to read, they can get the reading comprehension faster and easier. It is clear that there is an influence between reading strategy and interest towards students’ reading comprehension.Keywods: Reading strategy, skimming, scanning.

Abstract

ABSTRAKBerdasarkan pengalaman peneliti dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar di kelas, pemahaman wacana bahasa Inggris mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris IAIN Raden Intan Lampung masih kurang. Hal ini terlihat banyak mahasiswa yang masih mengalami kesulitan dalam menganalisis sebuah wacana bahasa Inggris terutama dalam kajian tindak tutur. Sebagai respon dari kekurangan tersebut, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: 1) mengetahui dan mendeskripsikan jenis ujaran dan situasinya dalam novel The Beautiful and the Damned karya F.S. Fitzgerald, 2) mengetahui dan mendeskripsikan jenis tindak tutur dan situasinya dalam novel tersebut. Jenis penelitian ini deskriptif kualiatif. Penelitian berusaha mendeskripsikan fenomena kebahasaan tindak tutur performatif dari data alami yang diambil dari novel bahasa Inggris. Analisis dilakukan dengan memberikan interpretasi secara verbal tentang fenomena tersebut.Data penelitian berupa 391 ujaran performatif yang ditemukan dalam dialog-dialog dalam novel tersebut.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada 4 jenis ujaran yang ditemukan dalam novel tersebut yaitu: deklaratif, interogatif, imperatif, dan eksklamatif. Ujaran deklaratif dinyatakan dalam 17 situasi: 1) pleasure, 2) assert, 3) inform, 4) confirm, 5) promise, 6) predict, 7) describe, 8)accept, 9) refuse, 10) like, 11) dislike, 12) hope, 13) part, 14) greet, 15) apologize, 16) threaten, 17) thank, sedangkan untuk ujaran interogatif, terdapat 7 situasi: 1) question, 2) suggest, 3) request, 4) like, 5) confirm, 6) permissive, 7) dislike. Selanjutnya ujaran imperatif mempunyai 5 situasi: 1) command, 2) prohibit, 3) request, 4) permissive, 5) invite, sementara itu ujaran eksklamatif mempunyai 4 situasi: 1) refuse, 2) pleasure, 3) dislike, 4) sorrow. Terdapat 4 macam tindak tutur performatif yaitu representative, ekspresif, direktif, dan komisif. Tindak tutur representatif mempunyai 13 situasi: 1) assert, 2) inform, 3) confirm, 4) assent, 5) predict, 6) conclude, 7) suppose, 8) hope, 9) describe, 10) dissent, 11) remind, 12) exclaim, dan 13) offer. Tindak tutur ekspresif dinyatakan dalam 11 situasi: 1) pleasure, 2) greet 3) accept, 4) praise, 5) like, 6) dislike, 7) apologize, 8) part, 9) thank, 10) sorrow, dan 11) refuse. Selanjutnya, tindak tutur direktif mengandung 7 situasi: 1) question, 2) command, 3) suggest, 4) prohibit, 5) request, 6) permissive, 7) invite, sedangkan tindak tutur komisif mempunyai 2 situasi: 1) promise, dan 2) threaten.

Abstract

AbstractThis is a critical review of article entitled Early Language Acquisition on thebook of Psychology of Language by David W. Carroll. The discussion covers topics such as introduction, pre-linguistic communication, early phonology, acquisition of lexicon, grammar and sign language. Based on the structure and content analysis, the article was systematically well-arranged with an interesting presentation by using dialogs as illustration. Moreover the article was also provided with the valid and authentic data supported by logically strong argumentation and interpretation. Thus this article certainly gives a big contribution to the development of psycholinguistics especially in the early acquisition of language.Keywords: Psychology of language, language acquisition, early languageacquisition.

Abstract

AbstractPositive and favorable behaviour towards reading can encourage students to read. Having a lot of reading activities can enhance reading ability. The students who enjoy reading will be more often doing reading activity. The activity can promote knowledge and experiences in reading texts that eventually it can increase reading comprehension. Teacher role in the process of establishing positive behaviour towards reading is needed to create joyful circumstances and internalizing the value of reading advantages. If the students have reading skills and find it is convenient to read, they will have more possitive behaviour towards reading. Abstract

Pronunciation is one of the most important parts of English to communicate to the others since there are differences between symbols and sounds. In Junior high school English subject aims to develop the students’ communication competence. Without proper pronunciation in oral they have difficulties to raise the competence. Those made the writer do the research to find if there any significant influence of English song towards students’ pronunciation ability at the eighth grade students of SMP N 13 Bandar Lampung.The research methodology used was experimental research held in 3 times of meeting, 60 minutes of each meeting. This design used pretest and post test to find out students’ pronunciation ability before the treatment and after the treatment. The population of this research was the Eighth grade students of SMP N 13 Bandar Lampung. The writer took two classes from eight classes. In collecting the data, the writer used instrument in form of words list and text lyrics. After being tried out, the instrument used was for the pre-test and post test, the writer used t-test formula to get hypothesis.After doing the hypothetical test, the T-test showed the result 10.94, the critical value for two tailed test for 59 degree of freedom (df) 0.05 level significance is 2.00it can be concluded that: there is significant influence of using English song towards students’ pronunciation ability at the eighth grade of SMP N 13 Bandar Lampung. In other words it is effective to using English song in teaching pronunciation in order to increase students’ pronunciation ability

Abstract

This study aims at providing description of the language use in radiobroadcasting which focuses on the monthly slogan of OZ Radio Bandung.  There are two problems to be highlighted in this study: 1.  What is the implication of the language use viewed from the pragmatics perspective, 2. Is there any direct speech act performed by the slogan?This study is conducted using the descriptive qualitative method.  The data was obtained from the document, which is analyzed from the pragmatics perspectiveandthe theory of speech act.The result of the study pointed out that the monthly slogan used by OZ radio has intended meaning and include in speech act in directive category.  It is recomended that further study can analyze in detail and use various data collecting technique in order to highlight certain points of language use especially in radio broadcasting

Abstract

Mengintegrasikan studi ilmu keislaman dan ilmu umum di lingkungan IAIN Raden Intan Lampung menjadi satu tantangan tersendiri dengan beragamnya latar belakang pendidikan dan status para dosen, serta pengalaman mereka dalam berperan aktif pada forum-forum intelektual.  Namun, ini harus terus dijalankan agar muncul satu warna tersendiri yang membedakan antara studi di lingkungan IAIN Raden Intan Lampung dengan perguruan tinggi lainnya, khususnya perbedaan antara studi ilmu umum yang ada di IAIN Raden Intan Lampung dengan studi ilmu serupa di perguruan tinggi umum, salah satunya adalah program studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris.  Integrasi keilmuan ini hendaknya tercermin mulai dari kurikulum yang dikembangkan dengan mengadopsi materi-materi keislaman dan nilai-nilai keislaman sampai dengan implementasinya dalam kegiatan pembelajaran.  Ini semua harapannya adalah akan bermuara pada lulusan yang dihasilkan, yaitu sarjana-sarjana Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris yang Islami.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to know the influence of mixed stories toward students’ vocabulary mastery at the second semester of the eighth class at SMP Tri Sukses Natar Lampung Selatan in 2011/2012.The population of this research was the students at the second semester of the eighth class consisted of 69 students in 3 classes. The samples were 2 classes, the experimental class and control class. The writer used an experimental method and in taking the sample, the writer used cluster random sampling technique. In analyzing the data, the writer used statistical formula of t-testFrom the calculation, it is obtained that tratio = 3.05. From the significant level 5% and 1% obtained ttable = 2.02 and 2.70. So the writer concluded that there was influence of using mixed stories toward students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth class at SMP Tri Sukses Natar Lampung Selatan and the average scores of students’ vocabulary mastery who are taught by using mixed stories is higher than the average scores of students’ vocabulary mastery who are taught by conventional technique.
