Abstract

In the Indonesian context, students who learn English face some problems in spelling words. They often make spelling errors in essay writing. This study aims to explore and categorize spelling errors made by Indonesian secondary school students and the primary sources contributing the errors based on Error Analysis (EA) framework. The participants consisted of 38 students chosen from a secondary school in Lampung, Indonesia. The data were obtained from documentation of student’s written essays, and responses in the questionnaire analyzed based on Carney’s (1997) categories of spelling error and Richards’s (1980) types of error sources.  The findings showed that errors under categories of variant, slip, and the split was the most frequently found as the students were mistaken in choosing among the competing letters and sounds and also careless with the correct spelling. Besides, the major error sources were associated with the Indonesian (L1) interference when students transferred their mother tongue to the English (L2) spelling and the inconsistency between English spelling and sounds. The study implies that the learners’ better understanding of L1 and L2’s different systems of spelling as well as pronunciation rules will help them enhance their spelling performance. It is, therefore, suggested that the teachers give students more practice to drill and to pronounce the frequently misspelled words simultaneously to develop their spelling accuracy.

Abstract

Multimodality has been studied in relation to a variety of text genres, but it has yet to be used to textbook covers. This paper is aimed at examining the representational meaning of visual resources in the covers of selected English textbooks and how the verbal and visual modes strengthen each other’s meaning. This is a qualitative research that uses a multimodal discourse analysis paradigm. Visual and verbal data were gained from two covers of selected English textbooks. The analysis includes representational meaning (Kress van Leeuwen, 2006), text generic structure (Cheong, 2004),  and intersemiotic complementarity (Royce, 2007). The findings indicate that the representational meaning consists of  narrative and conceptual representations within the structures of   lead, display, announcement and emblem. Through the relationships of repetition, synonymy, and meronymy, verbal and visual modes help each other build cohesiveness. The cohesion signifies the relation between visual images and  verbal texts to convey meaningful messages of the covers. Certain implications were also elaborated in this study.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the level of foreign language anxiety (FLA) experienced by senior-high-school English language learners (ELLs) and to explore plausible factors that contribute to the learners’ anxiety. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach, involving thirty-four twelfth-grade ELLs from SMA 4 Banda Aceh, Indonesia, as participants. In gathering the data, Horwitz et al.'s (1986) Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) and semi-structured interview were used as instruments. The findings revealed that the majority of the ELLs were at a moderate level of anxiety, with more than half of them being at “Mildly Anxious” level and with no “Very Anxious” learners. The findings also indicated that the ELLs’ FLA was caused not only by teacher factors but also student factors. The teacher factors include oral presentation task, incomprehensible input, and teachers’ attitude, while student factors comprise learners’ fear of being laughed at, their’ beliefs about L2, and lack of preparation.
