Abstract

Conducting a macro research on population which covers the entire territory of Indonesian and compiling the findings on maps appears to be an arduous procedure. In this respect, population distribution maps may save much time and funds. Although scarcely available, population distribution maps may yet be taken into consideration if it concerns geographical population studies. Comparison and interpretation of phenomena such as population changes in every province may already reveal distribution patterns and interrelated factors. The shortcomings of the used distribution maps for this article are complemented by secondary data.

Abstract

Abstract

Publications on toponimy in Indonesia are still small in number. The term toponimy has not been widely known by the .society, although the problems that can be observed are among others: inaccuracy in providing geographical names, change in spelling, a great number of local languages, change in names in foreign languages into Indonesian, all of which have given rise to various difficulties, obstacles or confusion in identifying geographical features. In this paper stress is placed on the basic concept of toponimy and the problems of geographical names in Indonesia in the framework of national standardization.

Abstract

This paper deals with employment opportunities in the urban areas of Indonesia. The informal sector is present in almost every city in this country. The existence of the informal sector is usually associated with the lack of labour absorption capacity of the formal (modern) sector. The informal sector serves as a buffer against the lack of formal employment opportunities and the consequent unemployment. Nearly one third of the working force in Indonesia cities work in the informal sector Those active in this sector usually are in the fully economically productive age brackets. The Informal sector can serve as a buffer power against the employment opportunity and unemployment. This can be seen from the fact that nearly one third of the working labour in cities work at the informal sector. Whereas, those who are engaged in the informal sector are at the fully productive age.

Abstract

Current information of landuse and landuse type change within a certain period of time is chiefly needed in a landuse planning. The information of landuse type change is obtainable through overlapping landuse maps of one period. However, the common problem is inavailability of the latest maps, especially those of the areas where the landuse change is rapid. The aerial photographs and remote sensing image can be used to solve the problem. Nevertheless, another problem which is not less important is the need for rapid analysis with high accuracy. For this purpose, computer well-known as Geographical Information System (GIS) is used . One of the GIS components is software, while USEMAP is one of the various hinds of software. The use of USEMAP for landuse change analysis is very effective, especially for the quantitative one. However, USEMAP has some shortcoming, namely this can only be used to analyze seven landuse types.

Abstract

A preliminar study on rainwater quality was conducted in the municipal area of Yogyakarta (Central Java) to reveal its chemical characteristics and spatial variation within the municipality. Seven rainwater samples were collected within the municipality and one sample to the north of Yogyakarta. The samples have been analyzed on major chemical elements and the general physical characteristics. The analysis shows that rainwater in the municipal area contains relatively high concentrations of some specific chemical elements. In the central part of the city HCO3 , Ca, Mg, and SiO2 and the electrical conductivity appear to be substantially higher than in the suburban areas. The relatively high concentrations are thought to be the result of urban activities, in particular combustion waste from motorised traffic and dust production which dissolves in rainwater.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to introduce the aplication of Thornthwaite formula in stimating the potential of water resources in a certain part of Yogyakarta Special Region. By using the climatological data of that area, quantitatively the water resource potential can be immediately calculated and recognized. In this study, Parangtritis and its surroundings, were used as a model. Calculation of the water resource potential results in an average value of the water resource potential of 1,2 - 2 x 106 m3 /12,,n22 /year

Abstract

Apart from its function as a soil cover, forest also plays a positive role in preserving water and sediment in a river basin. Rain water which is abundant in the rainy season is caught and stored underground, so that the erosion and flood hazard can be eliminated. In the dry season groundwater becomes reservation to minimize and even eliminate the risk of water shortage. This preliminary study is to monitor suspended sediment transport with respect to the forest area of upper Citarum River Basin at upper Citarih Sub - River Basin. On the basis of the preliminary study results, it can be said that for a river basin where percentage of the forest area is smaller (i) the suspended sediment concentration is higher and (ii) the total sediment per area unit is greater. These indications were found during the study period, from September 1987 to February 1988. The preliminary study was conducted in a sub-river basin where the soil type is a mixture of andosol and brown regosol, and the terrain is undulating, hilly to mountainous with slope more than 15 percent.
