Abstract

Plurality is an undeniable social reality. But unfortunately, lately there are many phenomena that show tension due to differences in identity. In this article, this is understood as the result of education that is not based on a correct view of human’s true nature. What happens is that education treats humans like programmed machines that can swallow all facts according to the interests of the authorities or elites. This condition is very dangerous because it negates students' ability to understand and reflect on diversity. So that pluralism is only understood as knowledge in theory, not as a reality that occurs every day. Horizontal conflicts are also very prone to occur due to the lack of individual acceptance of multiple realities. Because of this, it is deemed necessary to reorient education so that education is based on the view of the whole human being and enables students to be more adaptive in responding to the reality of plurality. In this article, this effort is made by integrating human ontology of critical pedagogy with the multicultural Islamic religious education. The focus on multicultural Islamic religious education is based on the consideration that religion is an important identity for a person and that Islam is the religion embraced by the majority of the Indonesian population. It is shown here that critical pedagogy understands human nature as an independent, conscious and egalitarian being. This ontology inspires a learning methodology that encourages dialogue, mutual understanding, critical awareness, and produces actions to overcome injustices.

Abstract

Since the 1980s until today, Aḥmad ibn Taimiyyah (d. 1328) has been one of the most quoted medieval scholars by jihadists. From ‘Abd al-Salām Faraj (d. 1981) to Osama bin Laden and his al-Qaeda. Ibn Taimiyyah is frequently cited to justify their doctrine. Ibn Taimiyyah’s fatwa is used to declare a legitimate leader of a country an apostate for not fully implementing the shari’ah and obligating every Muslim to jihād against him, classifying war zones (dār al-ḥarb) and requiring emigration (hijrah) from them, and permitting suicide bombings in the name of jihād. This article examines jihadists’ understanding of jihād as well as Ibn Taimiyyah’s jihād fatwas, specifically the three anti-Mongol fatwas and the Mardin fatwa, which are frequently cited by jihadists. This article addresses two major issues: first, it discusses Ibn Taimiyyah’s three anti-Mongol fatwas, as well as their citation and interpretation in jihadist fatwas; second, it examines the Mardin fatwa, which is always used as justification for jihad against the legitimate government. The article finds that some of the radicalists’ jihād doctrines quote directly from Ibn Taimiyyah’s jihād fatwas, particularly the three anti-Mongol fatwas and the Mardin fatwa, but most of the fatwas cannot be associated with Ibn Taimiyyah when approached holistically. The article also notes that Ibn Taimiyyah’s jihād doctrine is only partially quoted and ignores the majority of fatwas that are closely related to the theme of jihād, such as the concepts of hijrah and critical loyalty to the government. This article also identifies Ibn Taimiyyah’s jihād fatwas as being more frequently cited to legalize the interests of jihadist groups in justifying their acts of terror while ignoring the historical and political contexts that surround them.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the deradicalization of youths and the important position of educational institutions. The perspective used in this paper is the philosophy of ideological criticism of Jurgen Hubermas. This analysis is used to examine more deeply the ideology and character of the radicalism movement and deradicalization programs carried out by various elements of the nation. By critiquing ideology, we can understand the background of the emergence of radicalism. We can also analyze all forms of expression of resistance to the ideology of radicalism through deradicalization programs, especially through youths. Youths are important to be involved because they are a group that is very vulnerable to exposure to the ideology of radicalism. This paper concludes that to carry out deradicalization, the most important thing is to understand the character and ideology of radicalism movements. This strategy is important because in reality incidents of radicalism continue to occur. Even though the security forces have arrested and detained, even shot dead, the perpetrators of radicalism. This reality shows that radicalism has become a growing ideology among its followers, especially youths. By understanding the character and ideology of the radicalism movement, deradicalization programs among youths through educational institutions will be more effective. Deradicalization programs must also be carried out in a dialogical and humane manner. It is in this context that cultural dialogue involving youths across ethnicities and religions must be carried out in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

The study aims to discuss greetings as an essential factor in creating interfaith peace. As a multicultural country, Indonesia needs peaceful efforts to help create a safe and harmonious situation. The article uses qualitative research methods by analyzing primary and secondary sources. Primary sources are based on books or journals resulting from serious research and from authors who are authoritative in the field of peace studies. In contrast, secondary sources are based on journal articles and textual studies of previous research results. This research analysis study used Johan Galtung's thesis regarding the importance of using creative ways to build relationships with a pluralistic religious community. Therefore, as a tradition in each religion, the greeting is not a new but a significant effort to re-make it as a way of bonding peace between religions. The research states that: First, multiculturalism describes the diversity of Indonesian culture and the social conditions of its people; Second, the interpretation and dissemination of greetings in the doctrine of religion means peace. This fact contributes to the creation of good practices in a pluralist-oriented society. Third, greetings become a vital part of the multicultural educational process in educational institutions. In this case, multicultural education as a perspective used to analyze the object of this research has proven to build students' knowledge based on appreciation and acceptance of groups with different beliefs. Therefore, this study confirms that religious greetings can internalize the values of peace in social and spiritual life in Indonesia, especially as part of the learning process in multicultural education.

Abstract

Religious teachings are closely related to the ecological dimension which, after being reinterpreted, eventually led to the term ecotheology. Through previous studies, it was found that one of the religions that contain these values is Islam and Christianity. This study aims to answer the formulation of the problem in the form of how the concept of ecotheology exists in Islam and Christianity and how to compare the concept of ecotheology in the two religions in the study of Soren Kierkegaard's existentialist philosophy. This research is a literature study with a comparative approach. The findings of this study conclude that in both religions there is a strong emphasis on the role of humans as guardians of the environment, the concept of environmental justice, the position of God as giver of responsibility, the existence of collectivity, and spiritual values. in the ecological role of humans. In Islam itself, through the Nahdlatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah organizations, the collectivity is very visible. The main difference between the two lies in the doctrinal footing and organization of the movement.

Abstract

This study examines the Rahmatan Lil-'Alamin paradigm as a distinctive Islamic approach to reshaping the educational environment in Muhammadiyah schools. The need to comprehend how this paradigm, which is based on the idea of universal compassion and justice, affects the pedagogical framework and ethos inside Islamic educational institutions connected to Muhammadiyah is what spurred the study's development.  The methodology utilised in this study entails a thorough examination of curriculum papers, interviews with important figures in the field of education, and classroom observations at a few Muhammadiyah institutions. The study aims to comprehensively understand how the Rahmatan Lil-'Alamin paradigm is converted into educational practises, values, and learning outcomes within the Muhammadiyah school system by triangulating different data sources.  The study's findings show that the Rahmatan Lil-'Alamin paradigm has been subtly woven into the instruction fabric at Muhammadiyah schools. This integration is clear in the curriculum's planning, instruction delivery, and creating a supportive and welcoming learning environment. The study also clarifies how this paradigm affects students' character development by promoting a feeling of societal duty, empathy, and ethical consciousness.  By offering insights into the actual use of the Rahmatan Lil-'Alamin paradigm within Muhammadiyah institutions, this research contributes to the larger conversation on Islamic education. It not only draws attention to the distinctive characteristics of Islamic education within this paradigm but also emphasises how it can help achieve the larger objectives of comprehensive and socially responsible education within an Islamic framework.
