Abstract

Local maize is the main food for Madura’s farmers. The initiation of superior hybrid seeds which causes the conversion of commodities from local corn to hybrid corn creates a lot of risks and losses. This study aims to 1) Analyze the level of access to livelihood assets of local corn farmers 2) Analyze the level of risk and level of adoption of local corn farmers’ adaptation strategies based on livelihood assets 3) The Effect of livelihood assets on strategy adoption. The research was conducted in Guluk-Guluk, Sumenep Regency. The analysis used is pentagonal assets analysis, descriptive analysis, and binary logistic regression. The results showed that the highest access of farmers to livelihood assets was access to social capital. The highest risk experienced by farmers is a technological risk. Meanwhile, the adaptation strategy chosen by the majority of farmers is hybrid crop diversification. Human capital, natural capital, and financial capital have a significant influence on the decision to adopt the adaptation strategy. So farmers need to adapt by maximizing their livelihood assets for better livelihood sustainability

Abstract

The research objective was to create a structural model to link social, economic, and environmental variables to the sustainability of the beef cattle business. One hundred twenty beef cattle farmers in Pati Regency were taken as respondents. The exogenous variables studied were social, economic, and environmental factors. Endogenous variables were taken, namely beef cattle sustainability. The model was created using Structural Equation Modeling. The results show that social factors have a positive and significant effect on sustainability, while economic and environmental factors have a negative and significant effect. The net income obtained is low, and the investment return period takes nine years, nine months, and nine days. The number of beef cattle farmers who process dung is only 27.2%. To improve economic and environmental performance, it is necessary to provide training to improve skills in processing feed based on local resources and training in processing livestock manure into fertilizer and biogas.

Abstract

Coffee as a strategic commodity in the world opens up opportunities for various producing countries including Indonesia and Vietnam. Both countries have a significant role to supply the US market as the main export destination. This study aims to evaluate comparative advantage and export performance of Indonesian and Vietnamese coffee. Quantitative method has been used by calculating the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), Export Competitiveness Index (ECI), and Export Product Dynamic (EPD) using secondary data from 2001-2019. In term of RCA, both Indonesia and Vietnam have a comparative advantage in US. Indonesia’s RCA valuewas lower than Vietnam’sones, i.e., 5.52 8.57. This result was caused by the lower Indonesia’s export performance rather than Vietnam’s ones. The ECI of both countries were dynamic but tended to decrease in international market. In term of EPD, Indonesia and Vietnam were both in the rising star position that indicated strong capability of both countries in supplying coffee to the US market. Therefore, both countries shared a similar big opportunity to increase their coffee export quantities.

Abstract

The worldwide COVID-19 epidemic has had a great impact on farming and socioeconomic institutions all over the globe. This study aims to understand farmer knowledge and perceptions of the impacts of the one-year COVID-19 pandemic on agricultural systems. We purposefully picked 400 farmers from four regencies in Madura Island, Indonesia. The survey was administered from April to August 2021. Maize, rice, peanuts, tobacco, cassava, and chili peppers are the five most cultivated plants, while chicken and cattle are the main livestock raised. Farmers’ perceptions, measured on a 5-point Likert scale (from 1—not affected, to 5—severely affected), showed that COVID-19 had an average minor to moderate effect (average score of 2.49±0.9) on the agriculture system. The greatest impact is on farm income (average scale of 3.76±0.79), while the ability to plant crops in the upcoming season is the lowest (average scale of 1.2±0.56).

Abstract

Madura has a corn farming area of approximately 300,000 hectares wide. However, its productivity is still low, about 2.15 tons per hectare. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of production factors and the efficiency of corn marketing channels in Pamekasan Regency. Research respondents are farmers, retailers, collectors, and wholesalers in Batu Kerbuy village and Pademawu village, Pamekasan Regency. The total respondents were 60 farmers who were determined using the random sampling method and 12 traders who were determined using the tracing sampling method. The analysis techniques used were the Cobb-Douglas function variables, farmer's share, marketing margin, and marketing efficiency. The results showed that five production variables simultaneously affected corn production. Partially, there were three variables with a highly significant effect, i.e. labor, pesticides, and fertilizers, while there were another two variables, i.e. land area and seeds, with no significant effect. There were five corn marketing channels in Pamekasan Regency, with marketing channel I being more efficient than the others.

Abstract

The study aimed to analyze the effect of the application of production inputs on rice farming production and to analyze the allocative efficiency. The study was conducted in Bantaeng Regency. The primary data employed were collected from 36 farmers who owned 82 rice fields in total. The FPCD Model and AE Analysis were applied for the data analysis. The model showed that there were five variables (land area, seeds, ZA fertilizer, NPK fertilizer, and labor) had positive and significant effects on the rice farming production. Meanwhile, the result of EA Analysis showed that the variable of land area, seeds, and ZA fertilizer had not been efficient yet and the labor was not efficient. In increasing the rice farming production, the farmers are encouraged to cultivate more rice fields, apply for more certified seeds, ZA and NPK fertilizers, as well as reduce the number of labors used for production’s efficiency.

Abstract

The most significant contributor to the increase in food waste in Indonesia is household sectors, mainly urban areas. One approach to reducing food waste is Food Consumption Management (FCM). However, the application of FCM at the household level is strongly influenced by various aspects. This study aims to determine the relationship between socio-economic aspects and food consumption management at the urban household level conducted in four major cities in Indonesia during the Covid-19 pandemic. Primary data was collected using a digital questionnaire distributed to households in Medan, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, and Denpasar. A total of 149 household respondents were obtained and analyzed descriptively. Meanwhile, the relationship between socio-economic aspects and the management of food consumption was analyzed using the Pearson correlation method. The results of this study reveal that household income and the number of family members are significant factors closely related to household food consumption management (FCM), especially in terms of providing, storing, and disposing of food waste.
