Abstract

Comparative literature study by Claudio Guillen has basic reason namely Weltliteratur. Guillen did criticism upon it to formulate his own method on comparative literature research. Goethe has inspired him to create the basic assumsion of  his theory; the one and the many and the universal and the local as well, upon which the internationality by socio-historical perspectives is conducted to identify the diachronic structure. It will reveal the supranationality within the primary data being compared. A researcher will stand on 5 principles, one of  which is thematology where a principle motif  of  a theme lies as a means of  dialog in internationality. Keywords: comparative literature, internationality, diachronic structure, supranationality

Abstract

This paper discussed about the construction of space in The God of Small Things novel by Arundhati Royusing post-colonial space theory by Sara Upstone to find out the representation of the West and the East inside andand outside the domestic space including the post-colonial strategy used. It was because The God of Small Things seemedto talk about the condition of the dualistic post-colonial Indian society. Then, India itself is one of the dualistic postcolonial societies which means that it still holds its own traditions and runs the culture left by the colonial. Both colonialand Indian culture had their own rules with their borders that controlled people’s life but they were repressive to the society. The result of this analysis proved that in the context of domestic space and its surroundings, The God of Small Thingsshowed the representation of the West and the East that caused transgression and chaos. The chaos led to post-spaceoutside the home. Once, the novel showed that the post-space could also be done inside the home. Thus, the novel wasdeconstructing the construction, including the construction of post-colonial itself. It happened since the problem began indualistic conditions of post-colonial Indian. Keywords: colonial, post-colonial, chaos, post-space.

Abstract

e-width: 0px; "> For the duration of the New Order era (1966–98), the position of Chinese Indonesians was considereda problematic question: they were not “Pribumi” (native), but also not entirely Chinese. This “Chinese Problem”was discussed by a variety of speakers and writers, including several authors of literary works. In Di Kaki BukitCibalak (1977), Ahmad Tohari presents two ethnic Chinese characters, Nyonya Wibawa and Mulyani, the first asthe employer and the second as the lover of the main character, Pambudi. By applying Goldmann’s theory of geneticstructuralism, we show that through his depiction of the physical and behavioural aspects of the characters, Toharipromotes an assimilationist approach as the only possible solution to the Chinese problem (if it can be solved): thedichotomies between ethnic Chinese and Native Indonesians must be erased. However, Tohari continues to differentiatethe ethnic Chinese by positioning them as persons who must only act to support the welfare of the Pribumi. Keywords: “The Chinese Problem”, Ahmad Tohari, position of Chinese Indonesians, Di Kaki Bukit Cibalak

Abstract

This paper is focused on the alienation which caused by nation in Rilda A.Oe Taneko’s short story entitled “Antara Den Haag dan Delft”. Independent nation which is simply a rewriting of what has been taken away by the colonizer created fixation of space which can not accommodate all interests. This circumstance forced ‘kakek’ (an old man) in the short story to imagine the ideal space outside the nation. However, in the utopia kakek feels alienated. This paper used the Postcolonial theory by Sara Upstone  which conceptualize that the independent nation and colonizer do the same act, they just covered the instability in the space of nation. In the attempt to achieve independence, nation used the slogan unity in diversity. The instability  led a journey to the utopia city where there is no limitations in place. Kakek in the short story feels alienated in the utopia city because of the cover of instability in the form of his love to the nation that given to him. Anything that is not a part of his nation turned into something strange.  Keywords: alienation, utopia, love to the nation.

This research uses a dialectic method. Thismethod has been used to analyse six short stories in the short stories compilation through social contextual aspects. This research uses Gramsci’s hegemony theory which emphasizes the importance of idea in social politics control andcritical discourse analysis to analyze text intensively through historical context. Short stories have a unique positionin its corelation to the country’s intervention in literatures. Short stories become a part of mass media or newspaperhegemonied by a country. On that position, short stories have some benefits and they are not hegemonied directly by acountry. Short stories hegemony helps mass media to balance news dealing with some mass media which get pressurefrom country. The six analyzed short stories prove that there is ideological plurality and complexity built in thecharacters relationships in the stories. Abstract

The Kanjeng Nabi Verses (Syair Kanjeng Nabi) is a pegon and Arabic lettered verse that tells us the story  about Prophet Muhammad when his hair was cut. The same story is also narrated in the Tale of  Shaving Prophet (Hikayat Nabi Bercukur) that was written in Jawi. Both texts tell the similar story despite their different geographical backgorund. This study enables the epigone theory as an approach to controvert the idea on act of  plagiarism between authors of  both texts then to propose the creator‘s creativity in producing texts. Identifications on texts‘ functions and themes methods, and interpretation on cultural perspectives and transcribing tradition are used in this study in order to demonstrate author‘s creativity in producing texts. Keywords: The Kanjeng Nabi Verses, The Tale of  Shaving Prophet, Epigone, text function identification, themeidentification, comparative inter pretation

Abstract

This essay explains about postcolonial space body in the poem Sakramen by Joko Pinurbo. In the Upstonepostcolonial context, body is the subject which being ordered the same with home, journey, nation, and city. Body becomesthe last space in colonialism, as a form of power and ownership implementation in supporting the existed systems. Bodybecomes part of colonial absolute definition target, but there is posibility of redefinition continuance. This researchfinds that body construction is found in Sakramen poem paradoxically presents dialiectic between body and soul whichrevolve in the matter of God as body. This construction in the end becomes self-deconstruction for the author whichontologically refers that body (material) is destroyed in impermanence, while spirit (idea) of Christ as God is idealizedin unity. In the end, this condition directs that the ideal contruction is in the spirit world, while in here, (the empirical, physical) is just irony.Keyword: space, post-colonialism, chaos, altenative body, whole budy, paradox, self-deconstruction, irony.
