Abstract

Maya Angelou’s poems entitled “Woman Me”, “Phenomenal Woman”, and “Seven Women’s Blessed Assurance” present a topic of woman’s captivating and overwhelming sexuality and beauty that draw men toward her. Using the expressive approach, these poems are studied and analyzed to reveal Angelou’s ideas and perspective of women’s sexuality. In contrast to Angelou, the women in her poems are very confident about themselves. They accept their physical traits, proud of the way they look, and manage to make it their strong point, defining themselves as very strong, confident women. Through her poems, Angelou represents the idea of sexuality completely the opposite of what she was like in her younger years.

Abstract

This research is aimed at studying about the character development of someone. The development character is based on a novel Bartimaeus Trilogy: The Amulet of Samarkand by Jonathan Stroud. The discussion of this research is limited to the analysis of Nathaniel’s character development as the main character.The study of character development of Nathaniel from ordinary little boy to ambitious boy is important in this story because he is the main character and to prove that someone’s personality changed because of his past. For this reason, an objective approach suggested by Abrams is applied in this research. The definition of character development by Griffith which is used as the reference is also used to know whether the dynamic characteristic of Nathaniel is in accordance with the theories suggested by Griffith. The Library research is used in collecting the data. It includes doing intensive reading on the novel and finding the evidences through the plot.By doing the analysis, it turns out that Nathaniel’s character has changed from ordinary to ambitious boy because of his past. This finding is actually in accordance with Griffith’s theory of dynamic characteristic.

Abstract

  This research entitled “Expressions of Disagreement in English by Indonesian learners of English and Australian learners” intends to study and compare the similarity and difference between Indonesians and native speakers of English in expressing disagreements. This research also examines the choice of semantic formulae that both groups used toward different interlocutors influenced by familiarity, status and age. To collect data, questionnaires in the form of DCT (Discourse Completion Task) are used. This research involves 40 respondents consisting of 20 Indonesian students of English Department, 20 Australian students from Indonesian Language and Culture Learning Service (INCULS) program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM. The data are analyzed by using Beebe’s Classification. Both groups share some similarities and differences in expressing disagreements. Both groups employ a similar set of strategy (semantic formulae) but they differ from each other in the ranks and frequencies of semantic formulae used. There are evidences of mostly semantic formulae used, ranks and frequencies of those in relation to the degree of familiarity, status difference and age difference.

Abstract

This paper was intended to observe the relationships that developed between the two main characters in Batman Hush based on certain parameters. The parameters are character’s environment, social life and their choice to adapt to it. Through the process of analysis, the characters came into differentresult of relationship even though their conditions are quite similar.The mean used in this paper are Theory of Psychosocial Development. It’s a theory promoted by Professor Erik Erikson which separated human’s character development into 8 stages.

Abstract

This study aims to observe the Materialism among the main characters in Alexandre Dumas’ novel, The Black Tulip. In the research process, the writer finds the data by reading books which related to the topic as well as the through the internet.This study basically adopts “Dynamic Structuralism” which includes three elements; the reader, the work, and the reality. The method of research is conducted through library research, with The Black Tulip as the primary data, and the references that support the analysis as the secondary data.The result of this study shows that the materialism exists in everyone. People need money in order to support their life. Money is indeed important and it is employed as the parameter of success in some aspects of life. However, the level of materialism in every single person is different. This paper shows how significant a black tulip is for certain main characters, including the ways they treat it. It is also the symbol of sadness in the Netherlands in 1672-1673 which was identical with the dark age. Besides, it is also as the symbol of Rosa, the prison keeper daughter who helps Van Baerle in revealing the truth over the black tulip.

Abstract

The novel by Rick Riordan entitled The Lightning Thief is written based on Greek Mythology. This mythology is The Greek’s manifestation of culture that ages thousands years. To reveal the representation of Greek Mythology in The Lightning Thief as a cultural manifestation, study and analysis is conducted through dynamic structuralism approach focusing on plot, characters and settings (factual structure) of the novel. The plot is originated from three Greek heroes’ stories. The characters involve four significant mythological characters out of twenty seven mythological characters in the novel including four demigods, five gods, one Titan and seventeen mythological creatures. While in the setting of place, there are two places related to Greek mythology.

Abstract

Dear John is a novel American writer Nicholas Sparks.The relationship between father and son in this novel is one of the most important element that makes the story develops. It is an interpretation of the intrinsic elements of the story.The objective approach is chosen because the analysis deals with the intrinsic elements of the story. The method used in the study is library research which focuses on the literary work itself and the written material found in the library and the internet to support the analysis. The final result shows that there are a lot of factors that influence the development of the father and son relationship. The communication and the ability of each person to understand each other are two of the most important factors that influence the relationship of the father and son.

Abstract

This study aims to discover and analyze the formula of fantasy genre that can be found in the seven books of Harry Potter. This is a qualitative study, focusing the research on the particular literary pieces only. This study uses genre theory as the approach in order to fulfill its objective. Genre theory is commonly used to analyze popular fiction which is appropriate to do formula analysis. As the result of this study, there are at least seven formulas of fantasy genre can be found in the series of Harry Potter. Most of those formulas are regularly appear in fantasy stories, especially in popular fiction.

Abstract

This research attempts to investigate Indonesian students' errors in the use of determiners in their English writing. More specifically, it is an attempt to identify Gadjah Mada University English Department students' errors in the use of English determiners and classify them according to the types of determiners and the structural change of determiners. The results of the research shows that most of the incorrect use of the determiners was in the form of articles with 71 cases (72.44%), followed by possessives 12 (12.24%), demonstratives 10 (10.20%), and quantifiers 5 cases (5.10%). The results seem to suggest that the students had the greatest difficulty in the use of articles in writing in English. However, they did not seem to have difficulty in the use of demonstratives, possessives, and quantifiers. The incorrect use of determiners \caused some structural alteration of the determiners. There are five types of stuructural alteration of determiners: addition, omission, misorder, misformation, and misuse. Most of them were omission with 29 (29.59%). All of them were in the form of articles, followed by misformation with 28 cases (28.57%), addition with 19 cases (19.38%), misuse with 14 cases (14.28%), and misordering with 8 cases (8.16%). The results suggest that most of the students tend to omit the articles in their writing.

Abstract

Florentino Arriza is the main character in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel, Love in the Time of Cholera. This main character experiences the change from an innocent young man to become an indecent man. This change is mainly caused by his love to a woman named Fermina Daza. Destiny makes him wait for more than half a century to finally win her love. This article results in several conclusions. First, Florentino Ariza fits the criteria of the combination of the dynamic and round characters. Second, he belongs to the group of Melancholy. In addition, there are two factors for his personality changes: lovesickness and environmental temptation.
