Abstract

The stereotype of Islam as an extremist religion is often associated with adherence in a good-looking character to the practices of ritual piety. This study aims to discuss the Hadith that allegedly refers to the presence of good-looking phenomenon from the prophetic period. The study uses a descriptive qualitative research design which relates to the basis of critical analysis through an interdisciplinary approach combining isnād-cum-matn and socio-religious phenomenology. The results indicate that the Hadith good-looking is ṣaḥīḥ (authentic) based on the review of its sanad transmission and examination on its matn. The good-looking trait is attributable to the emptiness of morality in the practice of Islamic spirituality. This vacuity is induced by religious insights focused solely on theological and normative viewpoints. The solution is to spread moral teaching and moderate religious values proactively through different methods and techniques, such as virtual proselytizing in social media.

Abstract

This research aims not only to understand the concept of peace in the Qur’an but also analyze Muslims’ contestation in Salatiga to lead to a peaceful life among religious believers. It requires an in-depth examination on dialectical perspectives between the ideal concept of peace in the Quran and the reality of a peaceful culture in the public sphere. Methodologically, this research combines literature review and semi-structured interviews to gather theoretical data based on social responses and literature of contemporary Qur’anic interpretation. The research subjects consist of (1) Muslims living with non-Muslim family members in the same house, (2) Muslims in a non-Muslim neighborhood, (3) religious figures, and (4) non-Muslims with Muslim family members. In order to interpret a special meaning of Qur’anic terms related to peaceful life, this research employs a hermeneutical approach of socio-thematic interpretation of the Qur’an. In conclusion, this research points out that Muslims in Salatiga play a significant role in building a peaceful life where some concepts, such as unity, freedom, honesty, and respect, are principles thriving vividly throughout society. Additionally, tolerance is a foundation of social interaction leading them to cooperate. Besides, several values, namely harmonization, tolerance, and coexistence, can be seen as dominant ideas within the communities, and practices such as cooperation and friendship can also be seen in their daily life. Thus, this research affirms that the Muslim majority can lead to tolerance and accommodate diversity as a way of life.

Abstract

This research reveals an important phenomenon in maintaining peace in religious diversity and different understandings. All countries yearn for a harmonious and stable socio-religious system without any religious conflict. However, the exact formula has not been fully reached, including in Indonesia. There were conflicts based on differences in religious understanding that led to social-psychological pressure and acts of violence that led to regional exile. This research explores the regularity pattern of the socio-religious system implemented by an Islamic Sufism order of Tarekat Shiddiqiyah in Jombang, East Java. Thus, it can become a role model for the theology of peace in the archipelago and even globally. Several significant research results were found in this research. First, spiritual teachings applied by Tarekat Shiddiqiyah focus on practicing riyadhah (inner movements) and eliminating the feelings of envy, fanaticism, inappropriate claims, and unkind self-righteousness, which potentially become the leading cause of religious conflict. Second, the spiritual teachings elements of Tarekat Shiddiqiyyah reduce and resolve religious conflicts through several principles, including 1) the aspects of humanity through the principle of peace, 2) the concept of balance through the principle of correlation, 3) the concept of comprehensiveness through the principle of Ihsan.

Abstract

This study examines the socio-political activities of the habaib in East Java, Indonesia, which are heterogeneous and have different tendencies for affiliation among them. This diversity of work also underlies the diversity of their respective sympathizers and followers. This type of research is mixed research (library and field), with a critical-qualitative design. The approach used in this research is political sociology. The theory used to analyze the data is the theory of political behavior. This study found, first, that habaib’s socio-political behavior transformed, from the driving force of the integration of the socio-political life of the community to being part of the cause of disintegration. Second, habaib’s socio-political network influences and shapes the views of its community, and is unable to reach the wider community outside. The conclusions of the findings of this study contribute to the enrichment of the study of political sociology, especially regarding the socio-political gait and behavior of the habaib, as a subsystem that determines whether or not the socio-political life of the people in Indonesia is turbulent.

Abstract

Tarekat or tarīqah is the Muslim spiritual path toward direct knowledge (maʿrifah) or ultimate truth (ḥaqq) of God. This paper aims to describe the Sufism school teaching of Tarekat Rinjani in Besuki Village, Banyumas Regency. This research is also to reveal laku batiniyah and lahiriyah (spiritual and physical practices) of Tarekat Rinjani. Cultural anthropology research was conducted to achieve the objectives through participatory observation and in-depth interviews for collecting the data. Tarekat Rinjani is one of the local Javanese tarekat that existed within Javanese communities. In this tarekat, the members must carry out Laku Kendalisada ritual consisting of two parts; spiritual and physical practices, to reach the love of God. Spiritual practices were done by managing hearts, minds, and reciting wirid, while physical practices were done by loving the Republic of Indonesia, helping others regardless of religion, groups, and ethnics, and making spiritual journeys to places called as wingit. In conclusion, Tarekat Rinjani is classified as a ghairu mu’tabarah, which is not a well-recognized Sufi order based on Sharia and included in the creed of Sunni Islam, since it is typical of Banyumas Sufi-syncretic tarekat with non-mutashil sanad that is not directly connected to the Prophet Muhammad.

Abstract

This study aims to integrate green learning into the curriculum and proposes a holistic conceptual framework for Islamic higher education. This study used a qualitative-thematic approach and collected data through structured interviews with four informants from Islamic higher education institutions with green campus programs who were selected through snowball sampling. The results revealed that the green campus had been implemented in several ways, including the vision and governance of the campus environment, the appropriate waste management, research, and community service, and the learning process in several courses, either explicitly regulated in the written curriculum or implicitly taught in the hidden curriculum. One of the goals of implementing a green campus is to provide insight to students, lecturers, and other higher education communities about the importance of a sustainable environment through the learning process as a provision when living in a society. In addition, Islamic higher education has budgeted funds for green campus development, although it is limited because it strictly competes with funds allocations for other required campus development. For this reason, the researchers propose Tawhid-Based Green Learning, a conceptual framework for developing Islamic higher education responsive to the natural environment, which is reflected in the vision, mission, goals, learning materials, quality assurance, and outcomes. The concern for the environment based on tawhid (monotheism) integrated into the curriculum is also a form of human piety, and Islamic higher education has the task of producing graduates who have insan kamil personalities. As an implication, Islamic higher education must contribute to reducing the impact of global warming through tawhid-based green learning included in curriculum and lecture materials.

Abstract

Environmental education plays an essential role in minimizing the alarming rate of environmental damage due to the limited understanding of the community about the benefits of conservation. The primary reason for this research is the exclusion of religious values in environmental education. This study aimed to determine the benefits of integrating religious values and environmental education to raise public awareness on this issue and comprehend the public response toward the integration between religious values and environmental education. This study employed a qualitative approach based on Participatory Action Research (PAR) which allowed the researcher to act as an interventionist, facilitator, and activist by collecting data through interviews, observations, and field notes to produce primary data. The study identifies three significant findings. First, government agencies responsible for environmental issues rarely involve religious leaders in environmental preservation discussions or activities. Second, environmental issues are not the primary topic in religious studies. Third, the community has a misconception that humans are the center of the universe. At the same time, the universe is only meant to satisfy human needs. The conclusion is that the religious understanding of the community has not yet touched on environmental issues. However, this study was limited to a community in Tambakromo, Pati Regency, Central Java. A study that involves more communities is needed. In addition, the use of survey methods and more participant involvement for future reviewers of similar topics. Thus, it can potentially obtain a comprehensive study result.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the trauma-healing process with a religious psychosocial approach to the children of the terrorists. Qualitative method is used to describe the trauma healing process analytically. The subjects in this study were 10 children of perpetrators of acts of terrorism in Surabaya, Magetan, Banten, and Bogor, who were cared for at the Islamic Boarding School, the Central Java Fostering House, Indonesia. Data collection techniques include in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. This study found that the children of the terrorists have traumas in the form of feelings of excessive threat, remembering repeated and continuous events, and feeling helpless. To get rid of this trauma, the Central Java Islamic Boarding School conducted trauma healing with a religious psychosocial approach through three phases. First, creating a sense of security and stabilizing emotions. Second, training the children to make peace with the trigger of the trauma. Third, training the children to naturally socialize with the pesantren, school, and community environment. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of psychological, social, and religious approaches in trauma healing. The implication of this research is to enrich the trauma-healing model of the children of the terrorists.

Abstract

This paper aims to reveal how religiousness is in the United States based on the ideas of Roger Williams. From various sources, there are three things that form the background of Roger Williams thinking. Those are when he was in England, where the seekers of truth burned alive in frontof his house, the indication of churches dominating on the people’s life and the using of their force on one’s beliefs; his acquaintance with the Indians who taught him that anyone can say honestly without having to swear in the name of the holy book, and that anyone can help eachother without having or within one belief. Religiousness in America in terms of the thinking of Roger Williams is that the people have freedom to show their belief through both deeds and symbols as long as it does not annoy the others. The good and tolerant deeds are actually neededin a multicultural society. Religiousness means someone more aware of his choice in choosing a belief; his worship to the Lord was not as something imposed because of the control of the authorities.
