Abstract

Gender discourse does present particular problems within Muslim societies mainly for three reasons, (1) the strong presence of patriarchal culture within Muslim society (2) the strong literal tendency in interpreting religious texts, and (3) the strong sense of animosity toward the Western culture. There is a few however among Muslims in Indonesia who are willing to negotiate with gender issues not as a discourse but as a practical principles that should rather be applied in our daily life. For this group of people patriarchal culture and literal interpretation of religious texts are problematic. This group thinks that the idea of gender equality is an inherent part of Islam and must therefore be accepted. Among this few is the students of Ma’had Aly in the East Javanese town of Situbondo. These students are concerned with implementation issues of gender equality rather than with debating this problem as a discourse. This paper explores the ideas of these students and relates them with the general debate that takes place on the national level concerning the issue of gender equality.

Abstract

In Islamic thought, Mu‘tazilah has been classified as a rational form of current of thought. This paper is interested in exploring in a deeper manner this Mutazilite rationalism be referring specirfically to its concept of tauhid. We argue that Mu‘tazilah is concerned simply with presenting this concept in its purest form. Hence, they reject the notion of God having similarity with His creatures (tashbîh) and of Him having earthly body (tajsîm). Interestingly however, the Muktzilah is not always consistent with this general hypothesis, and argue for example that the attributes of God–like His words, the Qur’an–are created (makhlûq). We will try to expose that inconsistence as part of our critique to the Mu‘tazilah. The paper will also discuss proportionately the problems of tawh îd rubûbîyah and tauhid al-dhât wa al-s ifah, of which the Mu‘tazilah has given reasonably especial attention. With regard to tauhid ulûhîyah, the paper will only speak in general terms considering that the concept has not recived a clear explanation of the Mu‘tazilah. We understand nonetheless that this latter concept is about a rasional argumentation concerning the existence of God.

Abstract

In speaking of Islamic studies, we need to remember two things. First is the approach by which we elaborate certain point from certain perspective. In Islamic studies—like in any other studies—approaches vary. Different approaches would bring different conclusions. However, as long as an approach is academically sound and acceptable and meets all standards required, any conclusion resulted thereon is deemed correct and justifiable. Hence, no single conclusion is considered right while the other is wrong. Islamic studies should therefore acknowledge that academic truth is not singular but plural on the ground that there are many approaches toward many conclusions. It is this notion that we want to discuss here. We are interested in exploring the notion of intellectual truth. We hold that differences in opinion should be accepted as natural. Second is, that there is no fundamental differences in the basic value of sciences of any kinds. In other words, what is popularly known as Western science and Islamic science does not in principle differ. Science is science. There cannot be a dichotomy between Islamic or non-Islamic science. Dichotomy in science is not acceptable. Science belongs to all culture, tradition and religion. It does not know particularity. It is universal. Islamic studies should understand this, and use all tools, approaches, methodologies—albeit Western—for their improvement. It is toward these issues that this paper is destined.

Abstract

This paper deals with the problem of child protection from an Islamic perspective. It starts by discussing the Islamic teaching concerning family values and the function of family in child education as well as the responsibility of the family in protecting the children. By extension the paper is also concerned with the idea of marriage, its meaning and function in social life. We base our analysis on the Qur’ânic verses but also on the child protection law number 23 year 2002. We basically argue that it is up to the family to raise the children in a positive or negative manner. The very structure of family is very much relevant to the upbringing of the children and that their positive or negative attitude is dependent upon the nature of the surrounding in which they live.

Abstract

Violence in the name of religion often occurs because of the ideologicalinterpretation of religion. Well-formulated ideology is obeyed by its followers to achievecertain goals. Ideology may also be appropriated by its proponents to rebel against thestatus quo that they think is not in line with their belief system. A closed-ideology thatperpetuates intolerance is a latent source of conflict and violence. In addition, manyreligion-oriented violence is associated not only with religion per se as a source of inspirationand legitimacy, but also with such factors as social, economic, political as well aspsychological conditions of human being. One-sided explanation of violence in the nameof religion is therefore insufficient as religion is not monolithic phenomenon.

Abstract

This paper discusses the views of Muslims on the nature and legitimacy of bank interest as far as Syari’ah law is concerned. Three views are presented here. First is the view of the neo-revivalists who argue that bank interest is legally illegitimate and that it is a form of riba. Second is the view of—among others—Fazlur Rahman who believes that bank interest is not riba. And third is the view that bank interest is in the state of legal doubtfulness (shubhat). We do not support particular view in this paper. But in principle it seems particularly legitimate to argue that Islam is a religion of social wellbeing in which any transaction should be free from such illegitimate practices as riba, gharar (cheating), and financial speculation. However, we also argue that bank interest is too complicated to be equated with riba. There are no accepted standards and qualifications by which the two can be said as the same. To this complex issue we dedicate our paper as a contribution to the issue at hand.

Abstract

This paper is aimed at articulating the Sufi concept of tawhid, God unity. Tawhid has always been an intriguing issue to tackle within the premises of tasawuf considering that it is this notion that has triggered controversies over centuries. The Sufis have often been accused of betraying Islam by presenting a distorted version of tawhid. This paper will neutralize this accusation and contend that the Sufistic concept of tawhid is categorically Islamic, Qur’anic and prophetic. Against all odds, tasawuf has survived from all sorts of onslaught. This means that tasawuf is just in line with the prophetic Islam, or else with the pure of Islam brought about the prophet Muhammad. The paper will consult the views of many leading Sufis to support its basic contention. The strength of this paper does not indeed lie in its basic premises, but in its data, line of argument and in its analysis. The paper will leave aside for the time being the views of the Sufis that belong to the periphery.

Abstract

In the historiography of Islam, female ulama did not as yet receive a sufficient attention from both the historians and the masses. It is this unfortunate thing that this paper is concerned with. It traces the origin of this marginalization—as it were—and finds out that all this is due to the domination of male ulama in the whole history of Islamic thought. While this domination might be acceptable for some, the unfortunate thing is that the male ulama in their turn will offer the patriarchal interpretation of Islam often at the expenses of women. This paper challenges this form of interpretation and calls for the necessity of methodological deconstruction toward a better and more humane understanding of Islam. It supports the efforts of Muhammad Arkoun whose critical method focuses on four stages of analysis in relation to the interpretation of religious text. These are historical analysis, anthropological, sociological and linguistic analysis. The first three are contextual while the fourth is textual. In its analysis, the paper employs an approach that represents a sound and acceptable balance between patriarchy and matriarchy. It believes that gender-based prejudices must be eradicated if we are to produce enlightened discourses of religion.

Abstract

This paper speaks of something unusual. Exlusive Islam has been commonly branded as untolerant, while the inclusive Islam has been identified as tolerant. This paper tries to prove the reverse that the exclusive Islam can be tolerant too. It addresses first the problem of religion-based conflict in Indonesia arguing it is this problem that provoked the birth of such liberal font of Islam called Jaringan Islam Liberal (JIL). Born to propagate the polite Islam, the movement turned out to be just another defect within the Muslim society. The fact is that, majority of Muslims in the country are not happy with it. The reaction of Muslims varied, and culminated in the issuance of the Indonesian Council of Ulama (Majelis Ulama Indonesia/ MUI) that such notion as religious pluralism that the movement is busy campaigning for is forbidden religiously. This paper is an attempt to reconstruct the pluralistic discourse in a way that would not iritate the conservative segment of Muslim society. It also tries to understand why majority of Muslims in this country rejected the idea of religious pluralism propounded by the liberals.

Abstract

A professional teacher not only serves as a teacher, but also as a coach, counselor, facilitators, and managers. In order to perform all these functions, teachers are required to have certain qualifications and competence. One of the competences is competent to apply the various approaches, strategies, methods, and techniques that teach creative learning in subjects taught. This paper attempts to offer an alternative approach that is independently developed by the author and has been tested in its application of PAI learning, which is reflective learning. Reflective learning can help learners improve their understanding and awareness of Islamic values learned through learning activities which involve the process of reflection. Application of reflective learning approach has been proven to improve the success of PAI learning in schools characterized by increased religiosity of students, both in terms of effectiveness, efficiency, and attractiveness.
