Abstract

The performance of membrane separation processes can be generally expressed by membrane permeability and permselectivity. One of the important factors affecting membrane permeability in the filtration process of aqueous solution is membrane hydrophilicity. In this experiment, the effects of various soaking mediums, i.e. ethanol, isopropanol and butanol on the permeability of polysulfone membrane were studied. The results showed that soaking in ethanol gave the greatest effect proved by the drastic increase in permeability for membrane before and after soaking, i.e. from 263.57 L/m2.h to 645.49 L/m2.h. On the other hand, the membrane rejection against dextran T-500 before and after soaking in ethanol only showed a slight decrease from 96 % to 95 %. In addition, the contact angle between water and soaked-in-ethanol membrane gave the smallest value, i.e. 19.8°. The interaction between alcohol and soaked membrane is then considered as a reversible physical adsorption since the permeability reached its initial value after being soaked again in water for a long period. The experimental data showed that ethanol could enhance the permeability of polysulfone membrane by increasing the membrane hydrophilicity without giving any significant decrease in the membrane permselectivity.

Abstract

Pengertian filter pertama kali dikemukakan oleh H. Cartan. Pembahasan kekonvergenan yang lengkap dengan menggunakan filter dapat ditemukan dalam N Bourbaki. Dari konsep filter muncullah ultra filter dan ultraproduct yang belakangan memainkan peranan penting di berbagai cabang matematika khususnya topologi, aljabar, dan juga teori model.             Dalam makalah singkat ini kita ingin menyelidiki peranan dan pemakaian ultraproduct dalam teori model. Di dalam teori model konstruksi model melalui konstanta-konstanta, fungsi-fungsi Skolem, dan rantai elementer telah umum digunakan untuk membangun model baru dari model-model tersedia. T. Skolem yang mula-mula menggunakan ultraproduct di dalam teori model. Ia menggunakan bentuk khusus dari ultraproduct, yaitu ultrapower, untuk membangun model nonstandar lengkap complete nonstandard untuk aritmetika. Ini menunjukkan bahwa ultra product juga dapat berperan sebagai alat konstruksi model. Selain itu ultraproduct juga sangat penting dalam analisis nonstandard (nonstandard analysis).

Abstract

A study of three monthly solar-terrestrial indices of mean sunspot number, geomagnetic aa index, and Southern Oscillation Index during period of 1882 to 2000 was carried out to find any consistent short –term periodicities. We found 19, 22, and 26-month periodicities persistently occur in the above data, i nstead of 11-year pattern. We suggest that they might have solar activity origin.

Abstract

In this study, we used light microscopy to observe the structural and developmental pattern during direct somatic embryogenesis in rice (Oryza sativa L). Initiation of somatic embryogenesis revealed the origin of somatic embryo. It was unicellular origin from the epidermis of scutellum zygotic embryo. The polarity of somatic embryo established when the elongated embryo flattened at the apical end. On the onset of scutellum development, the scutellar notch was formed. In germinated somatic embryo, the shoot apex was connected with the root by the vascular bundle strands. This is an important characteristic of somatic embryo. The result led us to the conclusion that rice somatic embryos underwent the same structural and developmental pattern as that of rice zygotic embryo.

Abstract

A study on the reproduction aspect of Kapiek fish (Puntius schwanefeldi Bleeker) at three stations of the Rangau river in Riau – Sumatra was conducted in May – September 2000, by using a cast net and a gill net during trapping periods lasting three nights a month at each station for four months. A total of 375 individuals have been caught. The sexual ratio between males and females was not significantly different from 1. The first gonad maturation is at body weight of 115 g. The body length and body weight are proportional to the gonad maturation degree. The higher the gonad maturation index level, the higher the fecundity. Eggs which are ready to spawn are of diametre 0,27 to 0,40 mm. The distribution of egg diametre indicates that “ Kapiek” belongs to a kind of fish with a large fecundity and using a partial spawning type.

Abstract

Acute toxicity test of water extract of “gandarusa” (Justicia gendarussa Burm F.) leaves in Swiss Webster mice and oral median lethal dose (LD50) determination by four methods had been performed. Results showed that “gandarusa” leaves have toxic effect on central nerveus system. Oral LD50 by Miller-Tainter method, Reed-Muench method, Kärber method, and calculation method of Farmakope Indonesia 3rd edition in male mice had the same value as that in female mice i.e. 21.00, 21.03, 22.50, and 21.60 g/kg body weight respectively. Miller-Tainter method produced the lowest LD50 value.

Abstract

Pharmacokinetics and relative bioavailability of ketoprofen in capsule, enteric coated tablet and suppository, following si ngle dose administration (50 mg for capsule and tablet, and 100 mg for suppository), had been studied in six healthy Indonesian volunteers with three-way crossover design. The drug concentrations in the plasma samples were assayed by a TLC -densitometric method. The results showed that ketoprofen was rapidly absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract after administration of capsule with peak plasma concentration of about 3.7 mg/ml, which was reached in about one hour following the drug administration. Mean peak plasma concentrations of about 4.3 and 4.6 mg/ml were attained in relatively delayed time, i.e. about 2 and 1.5 hours, respectively after administration of enteric coated tablet and suppository. Ketoprofen was eliminated rapidly from the body with an el imination half-life of about 2.5 hours. The highest absorption efficiency was showed by the enteric coated tablet, followed by the capsule and the suppository.

Abstract

Structure and bonding properties of some quarternary pyrochlore oxides, BixY2-xTi2O7, 0.2 £ x £1.63, have been determined by analysis of powder neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction data. These oxides form a series of cubic pyrochlore type of oxides, where the cell size increases with Bi content. The expansion of the cell size is accompanied by decreasing of the electron densities of Bi cations and significant shift of Bi-O charge transfer. The refinements indicated that at high Bi contents, the Bi/Y and O sites are not fully occupied. This results indicates that the smaller Ti2O6 network in titanate pyrochlores can not fully accommodate the large Bi cations. There is no indications of any pyrochlore formation from the reaction of (Bi2O3:2TiO2). Temperature dependent studies on this compositions revealed that neither phase transitions nor pyrochlore phase were observed in the temperature range 25 £ T £1100°C.

Abstract

This work concerns the technique of rotating membrane cell (RMC) as an absolute technique to study the kinetic of solute transfer between liquid-liquid phases and its application to investigate the effect of an inert electrolyte on transfer of acetic acid (AA) from aqueous phase containing various concentrations of added salt into isopropyl myristate (IPM). Testing of the method using a fast transfer system and a set of autodiffusion experiment confirm its validity, and show an excellent control of hydrodynamics. For the case of acetic acid transfer, it is found that the added salt plays a significant role in the process occurring at the liquid-liquid interface, leading to an expression of Brönsted`s kinetic hypothesis type.

Abstract

An isolation of pathogenic Enterobacteriaceae bacteria has been done on spiced foods with turmeric and without turmeric ingredients. Food samples were taken randomly from 8 traditional food vendors at a traditional market in north Bandung during three seasons for 6 months. Next step was extraction of turmeric rhizome with sequential extraction method using n-hexane, ethyl acetate and ethanol. Those extracs were applied onto 4 chosen bacterial isolates using Kirby Bauer method, cylinder/hole plate method, and dilution method. There were 8 bacterial isolates which always present in all season. Also there were 4 isolates only found in rainy season. Eight isolates among them were pathogens. Total frequency of bacteria in samples with turmeric ingredients was lower than that without turmeric ingredients. The effect of extracts on all tested bacteria (Escherchia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus), showed that n-hexane extract could inhibit the growth of Escherchia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus at concentration of 50.000 ppm on solid medium. However in liquid medium, all tested bacteria were inhibited at the concentration of 1000 ppm.
