Abstract

The most difficult challenge for Indian Muslim societies is their compilation to confront their Muslim identity in the socio-political arena. Although there are many Muslim scientists there who claim that Muslims are part of India and India is their homeland. However India is part of Darul Safe (Muslim-friendly) where jihad is meaningless. It also opposes referring to Hindus as kafir (unbelievers), with its negative and exclusionary connotations. However, the struggle of Muslims in India is still long, both social-political, educational and Indian government policies towards Muslims who are still discriminatory. Although, what is felt by Muslims there, also felt by Christians in the arena of contestation with Hinduism there.

Abstract

In terms of history, waqf has played a very important role in improving the economic life of Muslims in all parts of the world. The main function of waqf which is closely related to worship practices must be followed by various and creative efforts in operating the economic functions it contains. The modern paradigm of management of waqf assets productively demands a more advanced management mechanism with all forms and spaces to innovate which ultimate goal is to carry out and run the economic functions. Some Muslim countries have succeeded in doing this. However, Indonesia, which has the most Muslim population in the world, does not benefit significantly from waqf. This article aims to offer a reformulation landscape on the concept of waqf that can be applied in Indonesia.

Abstract

The conversation regarding the above title by confessing my deep wonder about human’s continuing, never ending endeavor to grapple, to make sense, to find significance, to understand about faith and religion. For ages, since time of immemorial till today, we-humans, endlessly experience, and struggle to understand and to theorize special phenomena of important behaviors in response to significant questions of our lives: why we are here, where we come from, what are the purposes of our existence, why we cease to live, what happens after this, etcetera. These complex important phenomena come to be known widely in our todays’ world as faith or religion. The understanding and experiences on faith and religion, mine and others, are changing overtime, thus my talking points in this document are not my final narratives on the issues of interfaith relations. Hopefully such changes in experiences and understanding lead me to become a better human person, a better member of community, a better global citizen. All the data I use in this short paper is collected and derived from observation and documentation study. Having said these, I sincerely invite feedbacks and input from colleagues participating in this important academic event.

Abstract

This article confirms that popular Islam is an emerging Islamic phenomenon in Indonesia. The rise of popular Islam is due to the symbolic understanding of Islam. This kind of Islam leads to formalism  Islam, rather than substantial ones that lead to humanity and justice. Popular Islam has been influenced a lot because of the presence of celebrity preachers and their large-scale campaigns from social media such as Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin, and Whatshap. The biggest challenge of Indonesian Islam, in addition to the rise of popular Islam, is the growth of an Islamic spirit that uses identity in politics so as to arouse Islamic radicalism and extremism. Islamic radicalism-extremism is not actually a culture of Indonesian Islam, but later developed in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article is intended to analyze the role transmutation of religion occurred in the religious community in South-east Asia, especially in the Muslim community. Religion personally and collectively is usually believed as a form of the human obedience to the Almighty. Many activities either individual or collective are considered as manifestation of belief or implementation of God’s orders that the scripture contained. Often reading religious scripture like the Qur’an inspirited some radical groups to spread intimidation and violence for realization of their goal as be seen in several late decades. Meanwhile there are interesting phenomena take place in the Muslim community i.e. increasing memorization of the Quran besides its digitalization. In consequent, the former will emerge a generation of memorizers (ḥuffāⱬ) and the latter will facilitate the non-memorizers to deal easily with their holy book as such. Then, what is likely the impact of these phenomena in the future of the Muslim life. Are they will dominantly enhance radicalization or de-radicalization or other impact in accordance with development of technological and industrial era that so called the 4.0 era or the 5.0 era.

Abstract

This article seeks to provide a general overview of the picture of radical Islamism in contemporary Indonesia and relates it with the a more workable deradicalization project. The wrong measures taken by the authority in countering radicalism is due mainly to the fact that most of them understood the complex reality of radical Islamism from single monolithic approach wrong. The anatomy of radical Islamism forms two major parts; flesh-and-blood (soft-ware or ideology of radicalism as the spirit) and skeleton (as the hard-ware of radicalism). Based on such an anatomy, the deradicalization must be carried out in two major ways; soft approach and hard-approach. The soft approach of deradicalization must address two things as follows; 1). Mainstreaming religious moderation and; 2). Creating structural equilibrium in Muslims’ life.

Abstract

Abstract

This article is a research on the "people religion" that the Sedulur Sikep community of Pati, Central Java, considers as a belief pattern and value system that in fact constitute the unique identity of Islam. It starts with the existence of Sariddin, who later changed his identity to Sheikh Jangkung, and his struggle between Islam and local culture as an effort to actualize local cultural values in character-building education. The affirmation of Islamic teachings developed by Saridin with popular local cultural symbols and systems makes character education easy to digest and live with cultural awareness and cultural intelligence
