Abstract

The study aims to determine the level of beef consumption and the factors that influence the consumption of beef in West Papua. The data used in this study are monthly time series data of BPS, sourced from all districts in the province of West Papua from 1990 to 2004. Data were analyzed by using multiple linear regression equation by Ordinary Least Square method. The results showed that the average beef consumption per capita per year for people of West Papua is 0.79 kg. The increasing of population and income per capita affected the increasing of beef consumption significantly. Increasing the price of chicken meat, pork prices and the price of rice has significant effect of reducing domestic consumption of beef. Increasing the price of tuna, squid and sweet potatoes have a significant effect in increasing of the domestic consumption of beef.

Abstract

Pig keeping systems consisted of extensive, semi-intensive and intensive systems were studied to seek its performances on pigs and small-scale pig farmers. From six districts and 15 villages, 50 respondents were chosen. Characteristic of farmers and pig keeping systems were studied. Animal number used were 355 tails for measuring pig variables consisted of body weight, reproduction and herd size. Labor and experience were varied among the three pig keeping systems (P<0.05). Animal herd, farrowing rate, suckling piglet number and its body weight, weaned body weight and adult body weight were differ significantly (P<0.05) particularly on semi-penned pig keeping. Pig production efficiency and pig production productivity used as qualitative characteristic were not drawing animal efficiency and producivity.

Abstract

The Research intended to study the method of prediction of physical quality of corn kernel of feed stuff using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based on variables of image data. The image data was used as input of ANN, and the character of corn kernel was the output. The variable of image were index red index, green index, blue index, hue, saturation, intensity, entropy, energy, contras, and homogeneity. The characteristic of corn were intact kernel, broken kernel, damage kernel and moldy kernel. There are two phase of application of ANN; training and validation. The training intend to calibrate the relationship between the image variable and corn kernel characteristics. The validation intend to examine the accuration of prediction. The result of research indicated that the intact kernel less accurate (70%) be predicted by image data, whereas broken kernel, damage kernel and moldy kernel can be predicted accurately (100%). The average of accuracy was 92.5 %. It was conclude that it was need to be improved the quality of image before processing the data to be input to the ANN.

Abstract

An experiment has been conducted to study the effect of diets with different level of protein on the production performance of offspring (F1) crossbred between arab and kampung chicken. Fifty four crossbreed hens of 20 weeks of age were used in the experiment. The hens were divided into 3 feeding groups, each 6 x 3 heads. Treatment diets were formulated in three different levels of protein: 15, 17 and 19 %. The diets which an average energy content of 2850 kcal/kg were offered for 8 weeks. Variable observed included: feed intake, hen day egg production, FCR, egg weight and color index of yellow egg. The data were statistically analyzed by variance analysis in completely block design with 3 treatments and 6 replicates. The results indicated the protein level had significant effect on all variables. Diet with 19 % crude protein gave the best performance.

Abstract

The research was conducted to compare the quality of curd in powder processed by using natural (sun) and oven drying. Results showed drying processes did not give significant effect on the quality of curd products. Curd powder produced by using natural drying had acidity of 1.50 %, pH 4.02, total number of bacteria of 2 x104 colony /gram, water content of 7.02 % and protein of 14.4 %, while that of dried by oven had acidity 1.46 %, pH 4.04, total bacteria 1.5 x10 ³ colony/ gram, water content 6.8 % and protein 14.02 %.

Abstract

The research for predicting of carcass weight, percentage of carcass  and back fat thickness of male Duroc pig based on their age was done on one hundred and twenty male Duroc pigs.  The pigs were divided into four different groups of their aged: A (240-270 days), B (271-300 days), C (301-330 days) and D (331-360 days). Survey  method was done by using purposive quota sampling in Mabar Slaugther House, Medan. The variables observed were carcass weight, percentage of carcass, and back fat thickness of male Duroc pig. The prediction of variables which correlated with their aged were measured by using regression analysis. The result indicated that there was closely relation between animal age with carcass weight, percentage of carcass, and back fat thickness of male Duroc pig (P<0.01). The correlation coefficients were 0.989; 0.891 and 0.957 respectly.

Abstract

While it is not enough done in manual manner, recording is an important point to control the artificial insemination (AI) management. Then, there was an idea to carry out an arrangement of computerized AI recording and evaluation system. Its aim is to produce computer software in on-line system basis. Then it is useful in recording and evaluation of AI performance in 50 Kota district, West Sumatra as well as in decision support system. This survey and experiment combination methods used two questioners for two inseminators and four the Animal extension service officers. Secondary data were also collected from 50 Kota Animal extension services. Experiment used computers software of programming web (HTML and PHP) and database phpMyAdmin (MySQL). Variables consisted of several card, namely; (1) AI activity card, (2) pregnant inspection and infertility card, (3) Semen usage and liquid N2 stock card, (4) AI calving card which could be demonstrated by service/ conception (S/C), conception rate (CR) and calving rate indicators. The result showed that there was computer software in recording and evaluation of AI performance available for 50 Kota district. This system did recording of AI in a faster, valid, easy and qualified manner. After a local verification trial, a qualified system had been proved by using AI manual calculation comparison. Thus, this system will be more effective and efficient in AI recording and evaluation.

Abstract

The objectives of the study were to identify potency for development and possibilities for empowerment of small scale livestock product processing industries located in Bogor regency. A field survey has been conducted to collect information and data from some small scale industries which process different animal products of meat, milk, skin, bone, feather and slaughter house. Data collected included: human resources, capital, technology adapted, organization, product, marketing, government support, raw materials and market competitor. Data was analyzed by using the methods of AHP (Analytical Hierarchy Process) and Fuzzy NN – MCDM (Non Numeric Multi Criteria Decision Making). The results found that the most potency for development of small scale industry for animal product processing were the industries processing meat and milk. The most important aspect needed for empowerment was marketing.

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to evaluate the biological and economic performances in relation to farm sizes of broiler farms which participated under nucleus-plasma scheme program. The study was conducted through field survey to collect data from farmers in 2 x 11 Kayu Tanam District, Padang Pariaman Regency from December 2004 to January 2005. Twenty broiler farmers, members of the nucleus-plasma scheme of PT. Fajar Makmur Utama, were selected by stratified random sampling method as respondents. The farmers were divided into 2 groups based on number of broiler kept i.e., strata 1 which had < 10.000 broilers and strata II  10.000 boilers. Data collected included: farm size, farming practices, mortality rate, final body weigh, marketing aspects, production cost and revenues. The data were calculated to find out revenue-cost (C-R) ratio and profitability rate. Results showed that mortality and final body weigh were not significantly affected by farm size, but economic performances in terms of RC ratio and profitability rate were found better by the higher farm size. RC ratio of farms of strata I was 1.34 with profitability rate of 33.8 %), while that of strata II was 1.42 and profitability rate of 41.9 %.
