Al-Jamiah, a journal of Islamic Studies published by Al-Jami'ah Research Centre of State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta since 1962, can be said as the oldest academic journal dealing with the theme in South East Asia. The subject covers textual and fieldwork studies with various perspectives of law, philosophy, mysticism, history, art, theology, and many more. In the beginning the journal only served as a scholarly forum for the lecturers and professors at the State Institute of Islamic Studies. However, due to the later development with a broader readership, the journal has successfully invited scholars and researchers outside the Institute to contribute. Thus, Indonesian and non-Indonesian scholars have enriched the studies published in the journal. Although not from the beginning Al-Jamiah presents highly qualified scholarly articles, improvement—in terms format, style, and academic quality—never ceases. Now with articles written in Arabic and English and with the fair procedure of peer-review, Al-Jamiah continues publishing researches and studies pertinent to Islamic studies with various dimensions and approaches.

Abstract

Hampir sebagian besar ahli ilmu agama, jika bukan seluruhnya, tentu akan sepakat dengan definisi agama sebagai buah hubungan manusia dengan sesuatu yang dianggap suci. Dalam sepanjang sejarah, agama dalam pengertian seperti itu memang selalu dapat ditemukan dalam kehidupan masyarakat manusia. Tetapi, mereka akan berbeda-beda pendapat ketika berusaha mendefinisikan dan menjelaskan agama sebagai sebuah konsep. Sungguh, agama sebagai sebuah konsep, memiliki pengertian  yang berbeda-beda. Agama adalah sebuah konsep yang ambigu, sebuah konsep yang mempunyai banyak pengertian, seperti diperlihatkan oleh tulisan ini.Perbedaan pengertian seputar konsep agama itu telah menyebabkan pemahaman tentang agama menjadi semakln kompleks dan rumit. Semua agama yang ditemukan dalam sejarah diklasifikasikan berdasarkan sekurang-kurangnya tujuh kriteria, mulai dari kriteria yang bersifat paling subjektif hingga kriteria yang dianggap paling objektif. Ketujuh kriteria tersebut adalah normatif,Geografis, etnografis-linguistik, filosofis, morfologis, dan fenomenologis. Berdasarkan klasifikasi ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa secara akademik konsep agama mencakup sebuah fenomena keyakinan dan perilaku manusia yang sangat luas yang tidak terbatas pada apa yang disebut " agama-agama besar dunia". Agama-agama mempunyai persamaan  dan perbedaan seperti secara singkat diperlihatkan pada akhir tulisan ini.

Abstract

Sahabat adalah orang-orang muslim yang hidup sezaman dengan Nabi Muhammad saw dan pernah bergaul dengan beliau secara langsung dan ketika mati mereka itu masih tetap sebagai orang yang beiman. Mereka ini merupakan generasi awal yang beriman kepada ajaran Nabi Muhammad dan yang menerima ajaran Islam (hadis-hadis Nabi) secara langsung dari beliau. Mereka ini sangat taat kepada Nabi sehingga tidak mungkin mereka itu berani berkhianat dan berbohong dengan sengaja dalam meriwayatkan hadis Nabi. Mereka pada umumnya bersifat ‘adil, ṣiqah dan .dābiṭ. Akan tetapi karena sahabat Nabi itu adalah sebagai manusia biasa maka kemudian jika ditemukan sekelompok kecil dari mereka yang tidak ‘adil, ṣiqah dan .dābiṭ  karena menurut data historis mereka ini terbukti termasuk golongan orang munafik atau fasik, maka periwayatan hadisnya harus ditolak. Hal ini dimaksudkan tidak lain untuk menjaga kemurnian ajaran Islam yang berasal dari Nabi. Jadi dengan demikian kaidah al-Ṣaḥāba Kullahum ‘Udulun tidak berlaku secara umum.

Abstract

Islamic thought develop rapidly as the progress of Islam in the classical era especially when Islam facing modernity nowadays. In general, the discourse of Islamic thought ranges from the “left” to the “right”. The term "left" is used for political movement and changes which defends the right and interest of poor individual, i.e. vulnerable and oppressed people. This mainstream fight against social in justice caused by economics and politics, such as the tendency of elites to support certain communities in any forms and to neglect others. In general it can be stated that leftist movements aim to develop society, toward freedom of thought and civilized, and also employ logic as a way of life and thinking method. Although it seems very excellent for the society, however it also has some disadvantages such as it could harm personal freedom. Meanwhile the “right" is used for political movement and changes which demand for private freedom. It seem that the "right movement more flexible than the “left” one to protect personal freedom of thought especially freedom of faith, freedom of thought etc. To conclude, the "right" movement is more conservative to protect tradition.

Abstract

In Indonesian society, mudhārabah is one of sharīah economics systems that have been performed since long time ago in rural society. One example of mudhārabah is that landowners give the authority to other people to manage their lands and to share their crops. In fact, the prophet Muhammad has also done in his time of a such kind mudhārabah system in his society. In doing so, two parts are involved, the investor (shāhih al māl) and the manager of the land (al-mudhārib). Nowadays, mudbārabah is an Islamic economics system that is offered by sharīah banks to attract more customers. In applying this system, mudhārabah can be seen in two ways, as a system and as a product. Mudhārabah as a system is when it is used as guidance by a bank in its transactions. i,e., Partnerships agreement between the owner of the capital and the manager of a business is based on outcomes sharing. Mudbārabah as a product was applied in two ways in sharīah banks, i.e. the bank as the owner of the capital and the bank as the manager of a business. This article illustrates the way that nudhārabah is applied in sharīah banks in the perspective of fiqh.

Abstract

Cermin Raja-Raja (Mirrors for Princes) merupakan salah satu jenis karya terpenting di dunia Islam. Jenis karya ini berbicara mengenai etika pemerintahan yang Islami yang dimaksud sebagai pegangan bagi para penguasa. Dengan demikian ia berbentuk ideal dan didaktik. Seiring dengan berkembangnya Islam ke berbagai penjuru, jenis karya ini juga menunjukkan perkembangan yang variatif sesuai dengan kondisi dan kebutuhan tempatan. Ṭāj al-Salāṭīn merupakan suatu varian jenis karya ini yang memperlihatkan warna Asia Tenggara.Ditulis di Aceh pada tahun 1603, karya ini merefleksikan kondisi sosial, politik, trend agama dan intelektual  pada masanya. Yang menarik dari karya ini adalah ia tidak hanya berbentuk ideal dan didaktik, akan tetapi juga menyentuh berbagai persoalan legal keaagamaan dan politik yang relevan di kerajaan Aceh abad ke-17. Dl sinilah peran signifikan Ṭāj al-Salāṭīn dalam membantu sejarahwan dalam mewujudkan rekonstruksi sejarah Aceh abad ke-17 secara komprehensif. Meskipun ia tidak menawarkan peristiwa-peristiwa historis, namun karya ini sarat dengan konsep dan pandangan dunia yang melatarbelakangi berbagai perilaku dalam sejarah, khususnya Aceh.

Abstract

The quran is the great miracle of the prophet Muhammad saw. The book is absolutely holy, far from any distortion as underwent by other holy books. The Quran book is the most authentic source book ever given to human civilization. Nowadays no scholars or linguist could imitate the beauty and then compact quality of the Qur’an. In addition, the Qur’an has also made a significant contribution to Arabic language and also its eternity. Thanks to the book, the Arabs became one community, and Muslims could unearth on knowledge. Therefore, the Qur’an has become the central point for Muslims from the time of the Prophet to our recent area. A number of religious scholars, researchers, and writers have focused their attention on the holy book, from way how to read, write, memories, interpret, and study its miracle. This writing elaborates on the way how to teach skill about the Quran i.e., listening, writing, reading, and memorizing-all in relation to various theories of education.

Abstract

As one of the Islamic sources of law, hadith is always confronted with two challenges: reinterpretation and origination. Either of these two will appear any time the teaching it contents considered fail adjusting to social need and change. This holds true, for instance, in the matter of bequest to an heir. As is well-known, Islamic law of inheritance prescribes two restrictions upon bequest: first, a bequest may not exceed one-third of the estate and second, a bequest may not be made in favour of an heir. However, modern Muslim personal law, like in Egypt and Sudan, shows the contrary especially to the second restriction. Muslims of these two countries may legally make a bequest to whom he will, whether heirs or non-heirs. This directly runs counter to the hadith: "la waṣiyyah li-wārith" (no bequest to an heir). But the reforrners argue that the hadith is poorly attested. David S. Powers even suggest that the hadith is a false one. The hadith scientific approach Proposed in this article to the hadiths, as shown in al-kutub at-tisah, proved to corroborates the argument, albeit differs slightly with Powers suggestion.

Abstract

Perdebatan tentang penerapan syariat Islam di Indonesia memiliki sejarah cukup panjang, Bermula dengan ‘Piagam Djakarta" yang memuat tujuh kata "dengan kewadjiban menjalankan syari’at Islam bagi pemeluk-pemeluknja", pasca kemerdekaan. Pada Orde Lama (Soekarno) dan Orde Baru (Soeharto) perdebatan penerapan syariat Islam tertutup, terutama setelah keluanya Dekrit Presiden 1959 serta kebijakan negara (Orde Baru) untuk menjadikan Pancasila sebagai satu-satunya asas bernegara. Di kalangan muslim sendiri penerapan syariat Islam di perdebatkan. Sebagian mendukung dan sebagian menolak. Dukungan terhadapnya disuarakan oleh Islam garis keras, sedangkan Islam liberal menolaknya.

Abstract

Buku ini tengah dalam proses diceak, pada waktu Black September melumatkan bangunan WTC (World Trade Center) di New York. Peristiwa 11 September 2007 telah mencuatkan nama Osama bin Laden. Wajarlah apabila September Hitam tidak sempat diulas buku ini. Apalagi tragedi September Hitam mempertanyakan kehebatan Amerika Serikat (AS). Dengan mudah lambang kehebatan puncak kapitalisme, WTC, berhasil dihancurkan dengan biaya sangat murah, seharga tiket yang dibeli para pelakunya, dan merupakan tamparan hebat bagi AS apabila sebagian gedung Pentagon, sebagai lambang kehebatan pertahanan AS, mampu dihancurkan.
