Rapid urbanization and the concern for climate change have led to a growing trend to bring nature into the cities. Due to artificial urbanization, urban heat islands have become a serious problem. Greenery is expected to be an effective countermeasure, and much research is available regarding green roofs, green walls, street trees and parks. The intent of this paper is to present a synthesis of the literature review on the design and technology for cooling of building and surroundings by using vertical greenery system. Main climatic thermal problems in urban park in hot humid tropic area are how to minimize high solar radiation and to optimize the wind. Trees have potentials in ameliorating urban park microclimate. Trees configuration is one of determining factors to get benefit of vegetation potential in hot humid urban park.Microclimate simulation of 3 (three) different tree configurations in selected urban park model is carried out with three-dimensional numerical model, ENVI-Met V.3.1 which simulates the microclimatic changes within urban environments in a high spatial and temporal resolution. The simulation results show that an east – west orientation tree line configuration model has a higher temperature reduction compared with the base case model.Keywords: Urban park, hot humid tropic, tree configuration model

Background research is to see how many contemporary houses that much different from the Javanese house, contemporary house is usually attached to each other neighbor's house, do not have a yard, use half a stone wall, while the Javanese house has a large yard, far enough distance between the house and use a single wall stone. Objectives of this paper is to show natural differences in ventilation resulting from the use of materials, and types of homes are these different settings. Methodology used is to use CFD simulations to see how the difference and temperature difference. Using the measurement data base BMKG with winds measured at a height of 10m on the hottest and coldest months. Outcomes are the temperature and wind speed in Java proved to be more comfortable home. Summary The results proved that the traditional Javanese house more comfortable because it uses the hinge side windows, that make it easier for air to flow than the type of window (upper hinge) and one brick wall material further inhibit heat conduction than half brick wall.Keywords: natural ventilation, traditional house, contemporary house

Development of a sustainable city is a complex process with interactions of numerous aspects such as economic, environment, and social in urban living. Architecture is a major part in creating identity or character of the city and influencing quality of life of city community. In the context of architecture and urban design, sustainable architecture can be achieved if cultural aspects and ecological aspects are synergized as two connected entities. The study aims to identify and to analyse the application of Malay traditional architecture elements in contemporary buildings design in Pekanbaru. The assessment is based on two variables which are cultural aspect that shows application of Malay traditional architecture character as regional identity and ecological aspect that reflects application of Malay traditional architecture elements to respond the climatic condition. This research use qualitative methodology to analyse form and character of the buildings in term of application of Malay traditional architecture elements, and quantitative methodology is used with descriptive analysis to analyse the level of application of Malay traditional architecture elements in different categories and analysis. The research identifies that majority of contemporary building design use Malay traditional architecture elements improperly according to the philosophy of Malay traditional culture. The application of Malay traditional architecture character tends to show regional identity in the building design compared to respond ecological considerations. This study also identifies the different result between government buildings and private buildings in the application of Malay traditional architecture elements. The findings indicate the inconsistency of government policy enforcement in building permission to preserve the identity of Malay culture for the improvement of quality of life in Pekanbaru. The impacts of environmental destructions were felt in Indonesia. The irregular weather patterns, extreme temperatures, as well as floods affected many vulnerable areas in the Country oftentimes. Great numbers of environmental as well as man-related disasters were recorded such as: 12 earthquakes & tsunamis (in 2009), 8 volcanic eruptions (in 2008), 631 floods & landslides (in 2009), and 340 typhoons (in 2009). In total 416 lives were killed and 7,444 houses damaged. And the increasing numbers of environmental disasters was observed. Further, poverty and weal legal enforcement caused deforestation and severe biodiversity loss. All these challenges required real solution with Indonesian Sustainable Architectural Design Framework, not only the “green rating”. And the objective of the research was to find Framework of Sustainable Architectural Design Strategy in Indonesia responding to social economic conditions and addressing these environmental challenges. The framework was urgently needed by Building Construction Sector especially by Indonesian Institute of Architects (IAI). The population growth in the urban fringe area of developed countries is dominated by the urban sprawl and followed by “white flight phenomena”. In Indonesia, although the physically growth of settlements is similar, but the socially one is different. The modern housing estates have been built in the next to the rural settlements. In addition, the autonomous settlements have been emerged surrounding housing estates; the spread settlements will integrate in the following years. Vernacular architecture is not simply determined externally by the natural forces of its physical context. The poetic expression of Batak Toba house must have involved creative imagination in the mind of the people that may reflect the structure of mental models that constitute the thinking. This paper is intended to explore the presence of “generative concepts” of building’s form and its architecture, which is based on the figuration of relationship between man and the nature. This paper describes research regarding the relationship between wall material, heat energy, and floor area of simple house building with repulped paper-walled. Heat energy is energy utilized to reduce heat into the building. Goals of this research found design building types that have optimum to heat energy and floor area. This research used type of houses for low income as samples. Variables house is house type 21, 36, 45, 54 and 70. Methodology utilized the simulation and optimation. Pavements are found to be a significant contributor to the urban heat island. One of the strategies to mitigate it is by using permeable pavement. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of utilization of permeable pavement on air temperature above the pavement and building energy consumption. Simulation on five types of pavement (dense grade asphalt concrete/DGAC, permeable asphalt concrete/PAC, concrete, permeable interlocking concrete block/PICB, and grass block) using DesignBuilder software with concrete as the base for comparison shows that PICB has the highest air temperature reduction and energy consumption reduction compared to other type of pavements.Keywords: Permeable pavement, air temperature, energy consumption, DesignBuilder
