Abstract

Gilles Deleuze is a post-structuralist philosopher whose viewpoints have a postmodern and post-structuralist atmosphere that transform any solid and stable structure into dynamism, oppression and fluidity. In the twentieth century, several developments occurred in the arts and technology. This brought about the emergence of new art forms, including interactive art. In this research, we deal with interactive art from the viewpoint of Deleuze based on the interpretation of two examples of works of an interactive artist, i.e., Maurice Benayoun. We looked specifically at the role of the audience in this art form. The research methodology used was descriptive-analytical and the method of information analysis was qualitative. The results of this study show that in interactive art, in as in Deleuze’s view, stagnation and one-dimensionality do not make sense. The audience finds himself/herself in between the work and the personal. However, the meaning of the artwork and its transmission among the creator, the work, and the audience is always in progress, a fluid flow happening in the middle of the potential and actual task.

Abstract

People generally prefer to work or spend leisure time under natural light rather than artificial light. Direct sunlight that enters into leisure places interrupt guests when having a meal or are enjoying the surrounding natural environment. Bamboo curtains are commonly used in Indonesia to control natural light but they do not allow people to look outside. This research was aimed at solving this problem by developing three sets of colored glass curtains"“cool colored, warm colored and combined (warm/cool colored) "“ and testing them in a real situation, which involved test subjects having a meal in a café with a natural view, to find out which alternative had the best effect on the subjects' visual comfort and mood. Forty-two student respondents participated voluntarily in the experiment. The one way repeated measured ANOVA statistic results showed that there were significant differences in visual comfort and mood response in the same space between a number of manipulated conditions. The subjects had a significantly different visual comfort and mood response when the cool colored glass curtain was used compared to using the warm colored glass curtain or the combined glass curtain. This research concludes that bamboo shades and cool colored glass curtains are preferable to satisfy customers' visual comfort and that all the spatial conditions contribute to the customers' mood during dining.

Abstract

In Malaysia, the curricular subject of visual art, especially at secondary school level, pays little attention to the aspect of artistic knowledge development. Students are assigned to the arts stream based on their Level Three assessment results, which ultimately causes problems in the visual art learning process in the classroom. On the other hand, formal art education is absent among students in the science stream and visual art is perceived to be only for underperforming students, when in fact visual art can be a valuable subject for all students. This study used a qualitative triangulation method to assess the similarities between data from face-to-face interviews, observations and literature study. Visual arts education is duly needed at the upper secondary level of education in Malaysia to cultivate future generations with creative and critical minds. However, does the art education offered in the arts stream actually benefit the students who are assigned to this curricular stream based on the existing student placement system? This study aimed to investigate problems and issues in Malaysian visual arts education based on the system of student placement into curricular streams.

Abstract

The tradition of weaving fabrics by the local community in Tuban, East Java, Indonesia began in the 11th century and until now is considered an important part of the identity of the community. In the current conditions, the tradition of making traditional woven fabrics has persisted without improvements in terms of design, technique, function and products. However, the modern context has brought about a new lifestyle in Tuban that is no longer entirely traditional. Therefore, traditional woven fabrics also need a new identity that is compatible with the current conditions while still being connected to the original identity. This was done in the current research by developing visual novelty for the traditional woven fabrics of Tuban using an experimental method. Alternative processes and techniques of weaving were used to produce weavings with a variety of textures. In the development process, keeping elements that are traditionally valued by the local community was a major concern in order to retain the original character of the fabrics while adding novel elements.

Abstract

Sarawak Borneo has long been known for its diverse culture and multi-ethnicity, which is reflected in its arts and crafts. Pua Kumbu and Orang Ulu are famous visual motifs that can be seen on many products from Sarawak, including textiles and paintings, which could potentially be integrated into furniture design as cultural elements. The purpose of this study was to identify the perception, issues and challenges of cultural concepts embedded in furniture design from the perspective of manufacturers, designers and the public. In-depth interviews, surveys and observation were the three qualitative research methods applied in this study at MIFF 2018 and MIFF 2019. In general, the findings from the surveys done in 2018 and 2019 show that manufacturers, designers and consumers agree that cultural elements can be a unique feature and a competitive advantage for furniture design. A range of furniture designs that feature different cultural elements, such as local materials, colors, stories and history, are discussed in this article, which is expected to inspire designers and manufacturers to experiment and explore this approach in furniture. However, to achieve this, manufacturers and designers have to have their own views and strategies on how they interpret cultural-related elements in furniture, based on their consumers’ interests and global market needs.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to assess the reliability of the Art Reception Survey (ARS) in measuring the aesthetic experience of a Pua Kumbu cloth among visitors who visited the textile museums in Kuching Sarawak. Using this instrument with 28 items grouped into 6 factors, the reliability was assessed by measuring its internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. Thirty (30) visitors served as respondents in this study, who were from various age groups and different geographic backgrounds. The results from the reliability analysis revealed that the factors had good internal consistency. Cronbach's alpha coefficient ranged from α = .672 to .978. The results also indicate that Negative Emotion, Expertise and Positive Attraction produced a low intraclass correlation coefficient. Negative Emotion and the first items from two other factors revealed poor item-scale correlations. This study suggests the removal of the Negative Emotion factor, which was revealed to be irrelevant in measuring the aesthetic experience of the Pua Kumbu cloth, and of items 1 of both Expertise and Positive Attraction, making the remaining 21 items in the instrument reliable to measure the aesthetic experience of the respondents towards the Pua Kumbu cloth.

Abstract

An important aspect of the future of fashion design is eco-fashion. The first aim of this study was to understand how personal attitude affects fashion designers in pursuing eco-fashion design in their work. Secondly, the designer's behavior toward eco-fashion design was investigated. This study applied the theory of reasoned action (TRA) as the foundation for understanding the designers' behavior. A mixed-method two-stage solution was used. Data were collected through qualitative open-ended questions distributed among eight sustainable fashion designers and 98 fashion designers who were selected as the research subjects for a survey. Direct logistic regression and MANOVA were applied for statistical analysis. The model was tested via structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The most important findings of the research were that a positive attitude toward eco-fashion design could predict the designer's intention toward sustainability better than social norms. Further, the participants confirmed that environmental knowledge, perceived quality and price, perceived functional and aesthetic values, and the perceived usefulness of technology in the application of eco-fashion materials affected their attitude towards eco-fashion design. Furthermore, corresponding policies are proposed to facilitate clothing waste minimization in design through the use of eco-fashion materials, which could gain widespread attention and become a new trend in fashion.
