Abstract

In Malaysia, there is a question in term of intellectualism activities in the context of visual epistemology. Therefore, this paper revealed the problems that linger in the Malaysian contemporary visual art scene. In fact, Malaysian contemporary artists appear to have insufficient intellectualism values and less discourse activities. The lacks of scholars in the field of visual arts create a gap in the visual arts scene in Malaysia. The question of this study was to uncover the main problems in Malaysian visual arts that led to the problem of art intellectual development. In addition, this paper presents the awareness of the valuable contributions in the intellectual development that able to enhance the communication in the art object.Keywords: art knowledge; art object; contemporary art; interpretation; perception;

Abstract

Sistem pengelolaan sampah di tempat pembuangan sampah menjadi masalah lingkungan yang besar seiring dengan pertumbuhan industri pulp dan kertas di Indonesia. Konversi limbah padat menjadi bahan bakar pelengkap untuk industri kertas juga tidak memberikan hasil yang signifikan untuk memecahkan masalah pencemaran udara pada saat karbon aktif dibebaskan dari proses pembakaran. Masalah ini secara khusus menuntut sistem pengelolaan sampah yang maju dan efektif secara terus-menerus. Baru-baru ini, optimasi pemanfaatan serat-limbah menjadi alternatif khusus untuk mengurangi tumpukan sampah di tempat pembuangan sampah. Namun, tidak semua dapat didaur ulang. Karakteristik limbah padat berserat dari industri kertas tisu cenderung menurun gramaturnya, sehingga sangat disayangkan pemanfaatannya akan berkurang bahkan setelah proses daur ulang. Di sisi lain, struktur kimianya yang telah rusak selama proses produksi tampaknya menjadi semangat baru bagi industri tekstil di masa depan dalam mengembangkan teknologi daur ulang limbah padat berserat, yang menghasilkan benang tekstil generasi baru. Fokus dalam penelitian ini ditekankan pada penemuan tas yang terbuat dari bahan serat-limbah menggunakan metode eksperimental. Identifikasi karakteristik serat-sampah berbasis padat dikembangkan melalui teknik eksplorasi multi-ply yarns berdasarkan sistem interlace. Hubungan antara penciptaan produk dan forecasting  tren pada tahun 2013 akan menjadi analisis berikutnya sebagai salah satu cara untuk memecahkan masalah sampah.Kata Kunci: limbah; multi-ply yarns; sistem interlacing.The Potential of Solid Waste as Multiply Yarn Based on Interlacing SystemsSolid-waste disposal in landfills is becoming a massive environmental problem as a result of the growth of the pulp and paper industry in Indonesia. The conversion of solid waste to complementary fuel for the paper industry is also not giving any significant results to solve air contamination, as active carbon is released into the atmosphere by the burning process. This particular problem demands an advanced and effective continuous waste management system. Recently, optimized waste-fiber utilization has come forward as a promising alternative to reduce the waste pile in landfills. However, not all of it can be recycled. Fibered solid waste from the tissue-paper industry tends to decrease its grammage, which unfortunately will eventually reduce its utilization after recycling. On the other hand, its chemical structure, which has already been damaged during the production process, appears to be giving inspiration for a future textile industry based on the development of fibered solid-waste recycling technology, resulting in a new generation of textile yarns. In this research, the focus is on the invention of a handbag made from fiber-waste material using experimental methods. Solid-based fiber waste characteristics identification was developed through a multi-ply yarn exploration technique based on an interlacing system. The relationship between product creation and the trend forecasting for 2013 will be our next goal as one way of solving Indonesia's waste problem.Keywords: interlacing system; multi-ply yarns; waste.

Abstract

Abstrak. Kegiatan menenun sudah melekat di setiap jiwa perempuan di Suku Baduy mulai dari umur tiga tahun. Rumusan permasalahan dalam penelitian ini adalah: 1) Bagaimana visualisasi tenun yang diproduksi Masyarakat Baduy? 2) Bagaimana pewarisan dalam hal membuat kain tenun ditransmisikan pada masyarakat Baduy? Penelitian ini menggunakan metodologi etnografi dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Data didapat dengan teknik observasi partisipan, tersamar, wawancara mendalam, Studi dokumentasi, dan Studi pustaka. Penelitian ini fokus pada visualisasi tenun Suku Baduy, meliputi filosofi menenun, proses pembuatan motif, teknik menenun, pola pewarisan tenun, dan faktor pendukung lestarinya tenun Suku Baduy. Filosofi dan tata cara membuat motif tenun Suku Baduy merupakan amanat dari para leluhur. Motifnya diambil dari pencerminan alam dan pikukuh Suku Baduy, dan ada juga yang merupakan kreasi sendiri. Teknik menenun berupa teknik buatan tangan yang menggunakan ATBM (Alat Tenun Bukan Mesin) atau dikenal dengan sebutan pakara tinun (peralatan tenun). Pola pewarisan dilakukan dengan cara patuh terhadap pandangan hidup atau pikukuh Suku Baduy, setiap ibu mengajarkan kepada anaknya, serta anak sendiri belajar dengan teman sebayanya di sosompang atau teras rumah. Tenun Baduy hingga sekarang masih bisa bertahan disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor, diantaranya penduduk Suku Baduy sangat taat kepada amanat para leluhurnya, untuk memenuhi kebutuhan sandang, faktor keyakinan dan filosofi Baduy, faktor geografi, keterbatasan interaksi, identitas, faktor ekonomi, dan kemitraan.Kata kunci: Baduy; perempuan; sejarah; tenun; visualisasi.Visualizing Baduy WeavingAbstract. Weaving is engraved in the soul of every Baduy woman, who start learning this skill from the age of three. The problem formulation of this study is twofold: 1) How can Baduy weaving be visualized? 2) How are the inherited weaving skills transferred by the Baduy people? The data used in this study were collected through blind participant observation, in-depth interviews, a documentation study and a literature review. This study focused on visualizing Baduy weaving, including the philosophy of weaving, the process of pattern making, weaving techniques, inherited weaving patterns, and factors supporting the preservation of Baduy weaving. The philosophy and procedure of Baduy weaving are inherited from ancestors. The patterns originate from reflection on nature and the Baduy way of life (pikukuh), and also own creations are produced. The Baduy people practice handweaving using a handloom (no machine tools), known in their language as pakara tinun. The transfer of inherited patterns happens through the adherence to the Baduy way of life. Every mother teaches her children, who then develop their skill by themselves together with their peers on a porch (sosompang). Baduy weaving until now has survived due to several factors, including the Baduy people being very obedient to the mandates of their ancestors with regards to clothing, their beliefs and philosophy, their geographical location which limits interaction with the outside world, Baduy identity, economic factors, and partnerships.Keywords: Baduy; history; visualization; weaving; women.

Abstract

Seni lukis pernah menjadi medium bagi perkembangan dan kemajuan seni rupa. Namun setelah Narasi Besar ditinggalkan, praktek seni lukis tidak lagi berjalan berdasarkan narasi atau paradigma tertentu. Seni lukis sekarang berjalan tanpa paradigma tunggal, dilakukan dengan membangun narasi subject matter individual, dan menjadi salah satu faktor produksi dalam seni rupa kontemporer. Kemajuan sekarang ditemukan pada gerak maju proses kerja melukis atau produktifitas penciptaan lukisan (yang berhubungan dengan rekognisi dan demand terhadap praktek tersebut). Karya ini mempersoalkan 'kemajuan' yang terjadi pada praktek seni lukis sekarang, dengan 'membalik' kerja tiga orang pelukis yang berada di tengah mekanisme produksi-konsumsi seni rupa kontemporer: Radi Arwinda, R.E. Hartanto, dan J.A. Pramuhendra. Dengan persetujuan yang mereka berikan, kerja melukis mereka 'dibalik', dengan melabur lukisan mereka sampai kembali menjadi kanvas kosong. Narasi reverse hadir dalam video rekaman proses melabur yang diproyeksikan ke lukisan yang sudah menjadi kanvas kosong. Proses ini bisa dilihat sebagai perjalanan mencapai 'kanvas kosong' yang menggambarkan kepenuhan potensi dalam seni lukis, yang terbuka bagi kerja dan persepsi yang di-'proyeksi'-kan kepadanya.Kata kunci: kemajuan seni; kerja melukis; narasi; penciptaan seni; proyeksi; reverse.Reverse Narrative for the Advancement of ArtPainting was once become a medium for the development and advancement of the art world. However, after the Big Narrative being left, the practice of painting is no longer running by a particular narration or paradigm. Painting now practiced without any single paradigm, it is done by constructing a narrative of individual subject matter, and became one of the production factors in contemporary art. The progress is now found on forward movement of the painting working process or painting creation productivity (which is related to the recognition and demand for such practices). This work questioned the 'progress' that occurs in the practice of painting nowadays, by 'reversing' the work of three painters who were in the middle of the contemporary art production-consumption mechanism: Radi Arwinda, R.E. Hartanto, and J.A. Pramuhendra. With the approval from them, they gave their painting 'reversed', by whitewashing them to get back into a blank canvas. Reverse narrative present in the video that recorded the whitewashing process and then projected onto the painting that had become a blank canvas. This process can be seen as a way to achieving 'blank canvas' that illustrates the potential fullness in painting, which is open for labor and perception projected onto them.Keywords: progress in art; painting labor; narrative; art creation; projections; reverse.

Abstract

The archipelago of Indonesia has lots of historical buildings that were built during the Dutch colonization era, which lasted for approximately 350 years.  In 2011, there were 167 colonial architectural buildings in Surabaya city [1].  Due to their importance to the city as testimony of the history of Surabaya, and are a way to develop heritage tourism in Surabaya, the city government must preserve them.  A thorough research study has been done to support the city government in restoring a heritage building called PT Perkebunan Nusantara X (PTPN X).  It is a state-owned agricultural business office located at Jalan Jembatan Merah, Surabaya, and located among other historical sites. The PTPN X building was burnt down in 2005 with a damage level of about 60%.  In order to be able to build a new one with the original design of its past European architecture and details of its historical relics, the restoration acts require intensive consultations with many people such as the PTPN X employees, academic experts from Institute of Technology Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) and the city's cultural heritage experts who know all about it. In this paper, the approaches and final outcome of the building restoration will be described in greater detail. Abstract

Pesatnya perkembangan convenience store berkontribusi terhadap tingginya angka kejahatan pada toko. Pedoman convenience store dan teori-teori yang terkait menunjukkan bahwa visibilitas dari convenience store penting untuk menekan maksud kriminal. Namun, faktor yang dikembangkan untuk mendorong persepsi keamanan dan perilaku konsumen tidak jelas dijelaskan. Penelitian ini menguji variabel yang dapat menekan maksud kriminal melalui peningkatan persepsi aman konsumen dan perilaku dalam toko. Percobaan ini menggunakan 43 responden untuk mengevaluasi stimulus gambar simulasi interior dari convenience store. Data dari respon dianalisis dengan ANOVA. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa lokasi kasir jauh dari pintu keluar dengan kombinasi warna dingin dianggap aman oleh responden, sedangkan lokasi counter jauh dari pintu keluar memberikan efek positif pada perilaku konsumen. Sedangkan variabel muka bangunan tidak memberikan pengaruh yang signifikan dalam membangun persepsi konsumen dan perilaku. Hasil eksperimen diharapkan menjadi kenyamanan pedoman desain dari convenience store dan mengembangkan pengetahuan desain. Di masa depan, kita dapat mempelajari jenis lain dari toko atau fungsi lain dengan masalah yang sama.Kata Kunci: convenience store; pencegahan kejahatan; perilaku konsumen; persepsi aman.Influence of Façade Width, Interior Color and Cashier Desk Location on Security Perception and Client Behavior in Convenience StoresThe rapid development of the convenience store contributes to the rising occurence of retail crime. Convenience store guidelines and related theories show that visibility in convenience store interiors is important to suppress criminal intents. However, the factors developed to improve security perception and client behavior are not clearly described. In this study variables were examined that may suppress criminal intent through the improvement of security perception and consumer behavior in convenience stores. In the experiment for this study 43 respondents were used to evaluate a stimulus set consisting of simulated images of a convenience store interior. The response data were analyzed using ANOVA. The experiment results showed that a cashier location far from the exit with a cool color combination is deemed secure by the respondents, while the location of a counter away from the exit has a positive effect on client behavior. However, the façade variable did not contribute significantly to improving security perception and client behavior. The experimental results can be used in convenience store design guidelines and for developing design knowledge. In the future, other types of shops or public spaces with similar problems can be studied.Keywords: convenience store; crime prevention; consumer behavior; security perception.

Abstract

Pusat perbelanjaan yang berkonsep alam dianggap lebih diminati pengunjung. Penelitian ini mengkaji tentang pengaruh unsur-unsur alam terhadap minat konsumen untuk berkunjung kembali. Variabel yang akan dikaji terdiri dari variabel bebas, yaitu air (diam-bergerak) dan vegetasi (tanaman rendah-tanaman tinggi), dan variabel terikat, yaitu persepsi alam dan sikap berkunjung kembali. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode eksperimen stimulus-respon melalui pendekatan kuantitatif dengan prinsip between-subject factorial design. Simulasi gambar digital dari interior pusat perbelanjaan pada 4 kondisi sebagai kombinasi variabel tersebut di atas digunakan sebagai stimulus percobaan, di mana 4 kelompok responden, masing-masing 20 orang, akan menilai stimulus eksperimen dalam kondisi berbeda, atas dasar persepsi alam dan sikap berkunjung kembali. Data eksperimen dihitung dan dianalisa dengan statistik one-way ANOVA. Efek kombinasi variabel air bergerak dan tanaman tinggi ternyata tidak memberikan pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap persepsi alam responden. Efek kombinasi variabel air diam dengan tanaman tinggi tidak memberikan pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap minat responden untuk berkunjung kembali. Namun, efek kombinasi variabel air mengalir dengan tanaman rendah cenderung lebih mengundang persepsi alam yang baik dan minat berkunjung kembali. Hasil eksperimen ini diharapkan dapat menjadi rekomendasi bagi perkembangan ilmu desain dan sebagai salah satu referensi bagi desainer dan pengembang.Kata Kunci: mal; minat berkunjung; persepsi alam; perilaku konsumen.Effects of Natural Elements on Interest to Revisit a MallShopping malls with a natural concept are more attractive to visitors. This study examined the influence of natural interior design elements on client interest to revisit a mall. The assessed elements consisted of independent variables, namely water (still-standing/flowing) and vegetation (ground plants/potted plants), and dependent variables, namely nature perception and interest to revisit. In the experiment for this study, a stimulus-response method was applied, using a quantitative approach based on the principle of between-subjects factorial design. Simulated digital images of a shopping mall interior in 4 conditions with different combinations the abovementioned variables were used as experimental stimulus, while 4 groups of respondents, consisting of 20 people each, judged the stimulus regarding nature perception and interest to revisit. The experimental data were calculated and statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The combined variables of moving water and tall plants did not have a significant effect on the respondents' nature perception. The combined variables of stationary water and tall plants did not have a significant effect on the respondents' interest to revisit. However, the combined variables of flowing water and ground plants tended to be more inviting with a good nature perception and interest to revisit. The experimental results can be used as a reference for interior designers and shopping mall developers, and for the development of design science.Keywords: consumer behavior; mall; perception of nature; revisit interest.

Abstract

Abstrak. Karya penulis dalam proyek ini banyak mengambil inspirasi dari proses produksi konsumsi yang terjadi pada ruang. Konteks ruang pada karya penulis kali ini ialah format "white cube" yang menjadi standar bagi ruang seni. Dengan warna putih pada dinding, ruang seni menjadi bersih dan netral tanpa terbebani konteks ruang dan sosial sekitarnya. Format ini mengandaikan ruang seni sebagai ruang yang netral-dimana secara fisik dapat mengakomodasi kepentingan untuk menjadikan karya seni sebagai fokus utama di dalam ruang tersebut. Namun "whiteness" ini tidak bekerja semata karena cat putih sebagai perangkat satu-satunya yang berpengaruh terhadap persepsi sang pencerap, namun pula terdapat bagian pirsawan sebagai pencerap warna putih itu sendiri. Karya penulis menitikberatkan pada intervensi proses dalam mencerap warna putih tersebut. Intervensi tersebut dilakukan dengan cara menyasar unsur penting yang mempengaruhi kondisi ruang, yakni cahaya. Kemudian penulis menaruh peran pirsawan secara harfiah sebagai penentu penting dalam bagaimana kondisi ruang tersebut terbentuk. Caranya ialah membuat perilaku pirsawan di dalam ruang mempengaruhi cahaya yang ada di dalam ruang tersebut. Peran perantara tersebut dimungkinkan oleh perangkat elektronik yang dirancang oleh penulis dan tim. Perangkat ini akan menangkap reaksi suara pirsawan di dalam ruang untuk kemudian dijelmakan menjadi warna yang mempengaruhi persepsi pirsawan atas ruang yang didiaminya. Dengan cara ini penulis menempatkan karya penulis sebagai upaya untuk meremediasi persepsi pirsawan dengan ruang seni. Melalui eksplorasi hubungan presentasi karya seni di dalam ruang pamer, dalam hal ini menghadirkan kontras antara yang dicerap dengan bagaimana karya tersebut dibuat secara teknis, pirsawan menjadi subjek aktif, sebagai orang yang menghasilkan dan mengalami karya itu sendiri. Kata kunci: partisipatori; pirsawan; ruang; warna; suara. Listen to Your Color (Experiments of Viewers and Art Space Relations)Abstract. The author's work in this project takes a lot of inspiration from the consumption of production processes that occurs in space. The context of space in this author's work is that of the "white cube" which has become the standard format for art exhibits. With white colored walls, art exhibits are imagined to be clean and neutral, detached from the surrounding space and social context. This format assumes the art exhibit as a neutral space that can physically accommodate a work of art as the main focus in the room. However, the "whiteness" does not work simply because the white paint is the only medium affecting the perception of the perceiver; there are also viewers who are perceivers of the white color itself. The process of perceiving is an active process, where the viewer's body plays an important role in what is perceived. The author's work focuses on the intervention process of perceiving the white color. This was done by intervening the light setting, which is crucial in the perception of white. Then the author placed viewers as important determinants in shaping the condition of space. The trick is to make the behavior of viewers in the room affect the light in the room. The role of intermediaries is made possible by electronic devices designed by the author and the team. The device will capture the viewers' sounds in the room, which is then converted into a color that affects the perception of the viewers of the space they live in. By doing so, the author places his work as an attempt to remediate the viewers' perception of art space. Through exploration of the relation with the presentation of works of art in art exhibits, this work presents a contrast between what is perceived with how the work was created, then viewers become active subjects, as people who produce and experiencing the work itself.Keywords: participatory; viewers; space; color; sound.

Abstract

Warna dan bidang merupakan bahasa dasar yang dimiliki oleh setiap zat yang tampak di muka bumi ini. Warna dan bidang juga menjadi bahasa yang utama dalam memahami suatu karya seni rupa. Melalui jurnal ini, persepsi warna dan bidang pada manusia dipaparkan lebih lanjut. Kandinsky, seorang penteori warna, memaparkan bahwa warna tertentu memiliki kecocokan dengan bentuk tertentu. Menurutnya hal itu sudah ada dalam persepsi alam bawah sadar setiap manusia. Dia melakukan percobaan untuk membuktikannya pada beberapa orang secara acak di tempat tinggalnya. Dalam jurnal ini, penelitian yang dilakukan Kandinsky kembali dilakukan, namun objek penelitian dialihkan pada anak-anak. Hal ini dilakukan agar data yang diambil lebih dapat mewakili persepsi awal manusia. Tujuannya untuk membuktikan teori Kandinsky akan warna dan bidang dengan persepsi awal manusia.  Dengan mengetahui persepsi warna dan bidang pula apresiator dapat memahami dan memandang sebuah karya seni dengan persepsi berbeda.Keywords: bawah sadar; bentuk; kolektif; persepsi; seni rupa Kandnsky; warna.Collective Subconscious of Color and FormAbstract. Color and form provide the basic language for every substance on earth. Color and form are also the main language for understanding works of art. In this research, color and form perception in humans is further investigated. Kandinsky, a color theorist, stated that certain colors match a particular shape. He said these matches exist in the perception of the subconscious of every human being. In order to prove this, he conducted an experiment on a number of random subjects in his residence. In this paper, the research that was conducted by Kandinsky was replicated, but the research object was changed to children. This change was made so that the collected data may represent the initial perception of human beings. The goal was to prove Kandinsky's theory that color and form belong to the initial perception of human beings. By knowing color and field perception, art appreciators can also understand and look at works of art in a different way.Keywords: the unconscious; form; collectively; perception; Kandinsky art; color.

Abstract

Abstrak. Selama beberapa tahun terakhir, restoran bertema "nostalgia"menjadi populer di Bandung. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi unsur-unsur lingkungan yang disukai konsumen di restoran yang dapat mempengaruhi respon pengalaman nostalgia konsumen di restoran. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif eksploratif untuk menentukan variabel yang dapat digunakan sebagai stimulus eksperimen berikutnya guna mendapatkan respon persepsi, emosi, dan sikap. Data hasil eksperimen dianalisis menggunakan ANOVA, menunjukkan bahwa (1) elemen interior restoran yang paling mempengaruhi pengalaman nostalgiakonsumen di restoran;(2)meskipun gaya modern dapat membangkitkan respon persepsi, emosi dan sikap nostalgia, elemen dekoratif dan furnitur kolonial paling efektif dapat membangkitkan pengalaman nostalga; (3) ditemukan juga hubungan antara persepsi, emosi, dan sikap kaitannya dengan proses persepsi, emosi dapat mempengaruhi sikap konsumen di restoran, hal ini  sejalan dengan mekanisme persepsi dimana kontribusi pengalaman masa lalu dapat membangkitkan emosi sehingga mempengaruhi persepsi dan munculnya sikap konsumen di restoran.Kata kunci: elemen interior; gaya kolonial; nostalgia; pengalaman konsumen; restoran.Effect of Restaurant Interior Elements on Consumer Nostalgic ExperienceAbstract.In the last few years, 'nostalgic' restaurants have become quite popular in Bandung. This study was aimed at exploring interior elements that may evoke a nostalgic experience in consumers in a restaurant. In this study, an exploratory descriptive method was applied to determine the variables to be used as stimulus in the experiment to get perception, emotion, and attitude responses. The data of this research were analyzed by ANOVA and showed that: (1) interior elements of the restaurant influenced the nostalgic experience by consumers; (2) colonial decorative elements and colonial style furniture, even if other interior elements have a modern style, can evoke nostalgic perceptions, emotions, and attitudes; (3) a link was found between perceptions, emotions and attitudes and the perception process. Emotion can influence consumer attitudes in the restaurant in line with the mechanism of perception where past experiences influence consumer attitudes that are formed in the restaurant.Keywords: consumer experience; colonial style; interior elements; nostalgia; restaurant.
