Abstract

This paper highlights trends in the development of contemporary visual art in China through a parallel analysis of two of its components: painting and enamel art. The focus of the research is on the work of artists whose works combine a ‘western’ style with ‘eastern’ tradition. It was found that in the 21st century, the layer of Chinese cultural heritage was successfully transformed into new forms of expression, such as art objects, enamel sculptures, brightly colored paintings and more. At the same time, it has preserved the symbolism of color, plasticity of lines, narrative and figurative components, which is typical of the centuries-old traditions of the Celestial Empire. Artistic analysis was carried out on specific pictorial and enamel examples, distinguishing common and distinctive features in the concepts of the artists and their embodiment in the material. The way in which contemporary art enters the urban space of megacities and the interior of public institutions was analyzed. In conclusion, it is emphasized that the combination of ‘traditional’ and ‘recent’ trends in one work help to rethink the role of classical images in today’s art, as well as to identify Chinese artists in the globalized intercultural space.

Abstract

Sarawak Borneo has long been known for its diverse culture and multi-ethnicity, which is reflected in its arts and crafts. Pua Kumbu and Orang Ulu are famous visual motifs that can be seen on many products from Sarawak, including textiles and paintings, which could potentially be integrated into furniture design as cultural elements. The purpose of this study was to identify the perception, issues and challenges of cultural concepts embedded in furniture design from the perspective of manufacturers, designers and the public. In-depth interviews, surveys and observation were the three qualitative research methods applied in this study at MIFF 2018 and MIFF 2019. In general, the findings from the surveys done in 2018 and 2019 show that manufacturers, designers and consumers agree that cultural elements can be a unique feature and a competitive advantage for furniture design. A range of furniture designs that feature different cultural elements, such as local materials, colors, stories and history, are discussed in this article, which is expected to inspire designers and manufacturers to experiment and explore this approach in furniture. However, to achieve this, manufacturers and designers have to have their own views and strategies on how they interpret cultural-related elements in furniture, based on their consumers’ interests and global market needs.

Abstract

Recently, Indonesia has been rapidly developing public transport infrastructure. However, many people still prefer using a private vehicle for their daily mobility. This study explored the design direction of an electric bike sharing system (EBS) for the first mile/last mile (FMLM) as part of an integrated public transport system to attract more people to public transportation. A focus group interview (FGI) was performed with ten Indonesian students currently studying at Daegu City, South Korea. All of them had experience using public transportation in both Indonesia and South Korea. From the FGI, the data on user needs related to FMLM was analyzed to understand the gap between expectations and reality as well as to enhance the feasibility of the design and development of EBS. In the next stage, based on the various needs and expectations of the participants about ideal public transportation in Indonesia, design strategies and elements were achieved and optimized specifically for EBS. Furthermore, we propose two usability scenarios in order to meet the user requirements. This study will be proposed to traffic policymakers for use in developing a design strategy and direction for an eco-friendly EBS formulation.

Abstract

Deterioration in urban areas requires revitalization efforts to reuse vacant buildings. This is essential because abandoned buildings are known to have a negative influence on the situation and public activities in their surroundings. To reduce negative impact and prevent further damage to such buildings, a first step that can be taken is to activate these spaces with a variety of temporary functions. Creative activities with their flexible and experimental character are ideal solutions for temporary use of abandoned buildings. Artists are considered capable of inspiring society, including policymakers, in responding to this issue. In addition, abandoned buildings can be seen as ‘spatial experiments’ that can be a good source of creative ideas for the city. This paper discusses an artist’s approach to creating works of art in response to a specific abandoned building. Furthermore, the realization of a temporary creative activity, its background, its initiation, and impact on the stakeholders and the community was studied as a possible model for a re-activation strategy towards abandoned buildings in urban areas involving various parties. The Dian Lentera Budaya exhibition by Tisna Sanjaya was used as a case study. The exhibition took place at Bioskop Dian, a historical building in the city of Bandung that is currently not in use.

Abstract

The concept of soundscape aims to provide a more holistic understanding of the acoustic environment by taking several aspects into account, such as human perception, the acoustic environment and the context of the space. The soundscape concept is primarily concerned with the human experience and is considered more effective to access the acoustic quality of urban areas than traditional sound measurement. Soundscape analysis was used in this study to determine the relationship between various activities occurring in urban areas and their associated sound sources. This relationship can be used as design guidance for urban soundscape. The interaction was analyzed using the soundscape expectation approach, which is based on people’s memories of urban areas. The participants of this study were requested to compose an ideal acoustic environment according to their expectation for doing four activities: reading, relaxing, talking with friends, and playing with children. According to the data of the participants’ composition there is no significant difference in the overall sound levels between various activities. As a result, the appropriate acoustic environment cannot be determined solely based on the overall sound level. Individuals have varying expectations of sound sources when engaging in various activities.

Abstract

Education plays an important role in human development. Through learning, humans are enabled to write, speak, and create. The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted education, especially for those who depend on free educational programs that rely on volunteers for day-to-day operation. Children in the golden age are the most affected. Online learning can never cover the social interaction provided by offline learning. This research was done in Rumah Langit, which is a free community learning center for children, located in Rusunawa Urip Sumoharjo, Surabaya. After several months of getting to know the people involved, their surrounding environment, and participating in their daily activities, it could be clearly seen that Rumah Langit was lacking learning media. Especially learning media for children in the golden age who are often very curious and are in the stage of developing their five senses. OTTM (One, Two, Three, More?) is a modular furniture unit specifically developed for learning media at home for preschoolers, designed using the six steps of the design thinking method (Understand, Observe, Define Point of View, Ideate, Prototype, and Test). With its endless configurations, OTTM can be used as an open storage, a table and chair set for preschoolers, a seating chair for adults, and learning media for kids. It was inspired by the Montessori method of learning, which allows children to be creative and learn at their own pace. OTTM offers an easy and fun way of learning at home for children, especially for children in the golden age. By using OTTM, children can learn about basic counting, colors and how primary colors create secondary colors, and about shapes, from geometric to organic shapes.

Abstract

Therapeutic uses of art have been acknowledged since even before the emergence of art therapy as a discipline and profession. Over the last couple of years, the Psychology of Art course managed under the Visual Art Study Program ITB has included discussion and therapeutic artmaking practice for students from all over the university. During the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, the delivery of therapeutic artmaking practice in the classroom had to be adjusted. Therefore, a video guide was created to help the students to follow the course activities. This paper describes the process and the theoretical background of making the video guide as well as discussing some of the students’ reports using the self-concept framework and the effectiveness of distance therapeutic artmaking activities. The preliminary study used a quasi-experimental approach, specifically a pre-experimental design, towards Psychology of Art students in 2020. The data used included verbal reports and images, which were analyzed qualitatively using codification and content analysis with two raters to discuss the findings. The results showed that the activity was impactful towards students’ self-concept. In some findings, the participants elaborated how the activity had impacted them positively. In the future, this model of distant therapeutic artmaking can be further developed and distributed to give benefits to a larger audience.
