Abstract

Chinese settlement in Jakarta is a form of architectural products that affect the historical development of the city. Chinese descent people as immigrant communities have established a specific and unique built environment order that influenced by its culture, tradition and beliefs which are very strong in the Chinese society at large. Like other tribes in Indonesia, these communities also strongly apply their belief systems in symbols and architectural ornaments which of course is for the fulfillment of the good values according to their beliefs, such as acquiring wealth, happiness and prosperity. One of the unique architectural elements in traditional chinese house is a bracket system called Tou Kung. This system is a cantilever roof construction above wooden stuctural column. This research is aimed to explore the application of chinese believes in traditional chinese house architecture, especially in its Tou Kung construction. Abstract

In relation to  creative strategy on television advertising, currently many banking corporation in television advertisements often showing lifestyle in our society, for example, a credit card television commercial from Bank mandiri. Credit card products are generally considered to be very concerned with consumer culture that has become part of everyday society. In a closer look on Bank mandiri credit card campaign, there are messages addressed to a specific community to achieve appropriate communication with the target lifestyle. If the ad is using a lifestyle concept on creative strategy in approach, through the elaboration of creative strategies contained in the advertisement, it is possible to discover more about the viewer’s perception of the ad. The method used to examine the creative strategies are descriptive qualitative method and to determine the perception of the viewer on the research object are using quantitative survey methods to obtain a descriptive analisys about the audience perception towards the creative strategy in this research.Keywords: creative strategy, credit card, perception, television commercial.

Abstract

In history, fashion had been used as nonverbal language to indicate job, social class, gender, sexual status, richness, and affiliation to a certain group. Fashion can be used to analyze cultural developments or changes in a certain period or society, which represents their paradigms about beauty, values, and social dynamics. Other than designer’s creativity and market demand, contemporary fashion also influenced by trend, which can be judged by analyze repetitive aspects or elements in a certain season. One of the styles that appears repetitively in the last Spring/Summer 2011 runway is the using of  macramé technique. This old technique that began in Ancient Asia and America, also developed as sailor’s knotting technique in Europe’s Medieval Ages, widely known for its strong, masculine, yet rustic characters. But, in few designer’s collection, these images has been transformed to more soft feminine, even girly images, by using soft, light materials and more cherish colors. This article focused to analyze the cultural values behind the usage of macramé technique in some examples of Dior’s 2011 Spring/Summer runway collection, as retrospective to 1960-1970’s fashion. The key concept that differentiate the existing image of macramé fashion and contemporary image in Dior’s collection is the bipolarize of masculine-feminine. Deconstructivism of existing image of certain technique in fashion is the main concept. But behind those scenes, those designs can be viewed as the critic of dromology and simplicity principles of modern society that also can be seen as an irony related to the capitalism principles in fashion trend cycles.Keywords: macramé, fashion, trend, concept, dromology

Abstract

Proxemics is defined as physical distance in space for human interaction.  An individual could determine his/her level of interaction with others through proxemics. Other aspects than can be deter-mined by proxemics are personal space, surrounding environment and privacy. This research chose angkutan kota/angkot as public transport, which also serves as representation for public space. The main focus of this research is passenger seating choice in angkot as proxemics case and responses as forms of interactions. Field observation is used for gathering data and analysis was done using qualitative descriptive method. The outcome for this research shows angkot passenger who board alone rather chose to sit in corner to achieve more privacy.  Passengers who wish to build desirable privacy, non-verbal activities to reserve their privacy. Passengers who board in groups were usually sit facing each other with lower privacy level.  Verbal activities were more common among passengers who travel in group.Keywords : space, angkutan kota, interaction, proxemics, privacy

Abstract

Illustration for fashion become part of visual art that communicates fashion ideas, cloth’s finishing and trimmings, sewing lines and techniques, cloth’s colors and texture. Also it become a part of art and history, a part of social and culture in haute couture from times to times.  many scientists and artists have established canons of proportion according to the age where they lived. Fashion illustrators prefer to choose the Greek  Canon because its simplicity that adapted to fashion  purposes. the ideal principles  of human proportion used a  ratio mathematic that divided female figure into 8 units and a half. The theory has been changing from years to years until the ratio was developed  into 9,5 units or 10,5 units for getting the figure looked taller and more slender. So, to accentuate the height further the bulk of the body has been slimmed down. It should call the Code of the Fashion Canon. the other things which important to develop a good illustration is paying attention to balance line, Center Front, Center back, the Knowledge of Supporting leg and an endless practice to produce fluid and effortless stroke.Key Words: Fashion Canon, balance line, Endless Practice

Abstract

Cultures change naturally when the heir do not have the same exact experience, background and interest. As time passes by, cultures adapt newer aspects to suit current community to survive, Wayang Kancil (Deer puppet) also facing this situation. Luckily adaptation in Wayang purposes and forms make us possible to see this kind of artifacts today. Different as Wayang firstly developed as sacred instrument in religious ritual, Wayang Kancil has more practical function. It’s general purposes now to entertain and become learning media, therefore in using this form of visual art, people should considering its general meaning to avoid biases and wrong interpretation. As further descripted in this essay, uses of characters in Wayang  Kancil also known worldwide, not always using ‘deer’ as its main character but focusing on it’s cunning and clever character named trickster. trickster character well received and everlast in Indonesian culture because this character assured resembling an ideal type of javanese people whom able to solve their problem meanwhile having their internal obstruction. Abstract

Capitalism has become one of the dominating ideologies of public life today. Proven by widespread advertising that communicates getting closer to the real life in its target audience. Ideology also related to semiotics in terms of communication. through Semiotics will be discussed the elements of communication through signs and codes which will be produce a meaning (denotative, connotative to myth). Advertisements use women as objects as well as the subject of advertising and trying to create a new myth in society in accordance with the standardization set up by the ad. Atelier Iris – The Azoth of Destiny is a Role Playing Game (RPG) game which has been developed by Gust and released by Atlus. This game is under the head of the sequel of Atelier series that contains a lot of alchemist knowledge.As there is in a RPG game, Atelier Iris – The Azoth of Destiny showing to us about fantasy theme with a lot of race variation on this characters such as: human, fairies, or even monsters race through the characters visualization. Those elements to get fused to the adventurous and strategic elements into the good yet compact storyline on it. Characters visualization inside this game, Atelier Iris – The Azoth of Destiny, reveals a lot of meaning, semantic and also semioticperspectives in it. Abstract

Numbers of children as talents in national television commercials tend to increase in 2008-2010,  those are not limited to children’s consumer goods such as snacks, milk, medicines, there are also  tendency of children are used as models of television commercials for adult‘s consumer goods, by utilizing the characteristics of their innocent and cute appeal to pose for the target audience. What exactly is the role of children’s figure which appears in advertisements for adult’s consumer goods? Purposive sampling to four TV commercials that aired on national TV broadcast in 2008 and 2010 is selected according to the criteria of the study such as, Television commercials that use children as model for adult‘s consumer goods in terms of narrative and its visual aspect is thought to contain the positive or negative values and the product is restricted from food products, cellular phone providers, cosmetics and cleaning clothes, represented a more dominant advertisements, deemed contains the values that want to revealed in the research and deserves represent one type of product which aired on national television stations like Indosiar, RCTI, SCTV, TRANS TV. Interpretive semiotic analysis of signification models through denotation and connotation, to gain an overview of the relationship between visual and verbal elements. Advertising theory approach, body language and cinematography are used to analyze the components contained in the ads, to find out the role of models and to reveal the raised values. The result finds that children had the role as the influencer, the originator of the idea, and advocating the product purchase decisions. The values contain in the fourth television advertisements are associated with positive values such as modesty, decency or fairness as well as negative values, contrary to prevailing norms in society such as lying and demeaning behavior of others. These results benefit for assessing and refining the things that can impact positively or negatively in television commercials.Keywords: advertising, children , talent artist, TV commercials, semiotics

Abstract

Nowadays human live in visual culture which graphic design holds a significant role in sculpting opinion, mind frame, perception and choices. Ironically, people’s understanding for graphic design is not as wide as design’s influence. most people have narrow and sectoral design knowledge. Graphic design output was only commonly known as logo or poster. public will need an open minded and wide knowledge to respond graphic design critically and proportionally. This journal entry will discuss graphic design in holistic approach. the relevance between graphic design with time and space will be the main point of view. the second point will be the graphic design relevance with material and media.  the last point will discuss personality who made influential design. In holistic approach all aspects of visual communication such as communicator, message, audience, media, momentum, context and communication effect are involved.  The influence of graphic design will also be discussed in holistic approach, such as attention, desire, interest, understanding, experience and behavioral change.keywords : graphic design, holistic approach, design knowledge
