Abstract

In human life, culture is really important. Culture serves many functions, often overwhelming many things in life. It shapes the way we live, think, speak, act, relate to each other, and so on. Even within the framework of violence and peace, every culture projects ambiguity in its functions. It can either be a source of violence or a source for peace building. Starting from this ambiguity, forms of violence and/or conflicts in many places (especially in Indonesia) can be reduced by culture through cultural communities, in a frame of peace building. Our efforts for peace building in this case need to include internal and external cultures, sources of power, and how to foster independence from the agent of culture from the ambiguity and other factors which cause violence. This article will explore the role of some of Indonesian local cultures in building peace. In addition, it will show that education, as a source of power, is the most important way to raise people’s consciousness to live in peace.

Abstract

This article analyzes the relevance of Islamic lawimplemented in Aceh since 1999 towards a cosmopolitan societydevelopments. The study is based on the assumption that portraitsIslam as a religion that accommodates the development ofterrorism. This assumption is further strengthened by the numberof Islamic radical groups that are involved various acts of terror,both in Indonesia and other places around the world. Therefore,the term “enforcement of Islamic sharia” becoming a phrase thatraises concerns of many parties and considered as a part ofopening a space for the development of Islamic radicalism.Question will be answered is in what extent Islamic law in Acehrelevant to the cosmopolitan modern society. This question willbe answered by searching the relevant references, criticizing, andinterpreting them. Thus, the author discovered that theimplementation of Islamic law in Aceh does not directly providespace on the birth of Islamic radicalism that could bring upterrorism, but more to the Islamic reduction in normative level,dealing with private issues, and had no social vision. In a largercontext, this kind of implementation of Islamic law will be a badmirror of the Islamic law reality as a whole.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the origins of Nias peopleancestor based on anonymous stories (called hoho in Nias term)which were inter-generational inherited in Nias society. Generally,Nias people recognised three kinds of hoho that were always andcorrectly related to the creatures assumed as their ancestor: onombela, nadaoya, and lani ewöna. These anonymous stories have beenbecoming a buffer for the existence of Nias Culture which weremanifested on the custom ceremonies practice by Nias people untilnowadays such as mangani binu and stone jumping. In the otherhand, this article also tries to identify and describe the functionsof those rituals toward the daily life of Nias people. According tothe culture theory by van Peursen, this article proposes that therituals have three kinds functions for Nias society. First, it couldbe a means for human to deal with the supra-natural power.Second, it could be a current guarantee that humans’ effort in theirhistorical life will be a never ending process and repeatablesuccess. Third, it was related to the taboo that was existed in certaincommunity which is in fact, able to maintain the harmony ofhuman life.

Abstract

This articles aims to be a semiotics analysis towardsHanung Bramantyo’s movie Ayat-Ayat Cinta (AAC) and PerempuanBerkalung Sorban (PBS). This article starts from the fact that sincethis movie launched in 22 February 2008, AAC gained hugeattentions for audiences. Meanwhile, PBS gained negativeresponses by many criticisms toward this movie. Based on theanalysis, both movies have religious topics so that they consideredas religious movies, as the audiences identified them. Thus, onething that made these movies different was the portraying ofpolygamy in the movie. AAC focused on man as a polygamy actorwhich brought no issues arise. While PBS focused on woman as apolygamy victim that led to her suffer. However, AAC used manperspective that is called anti-feminist while PBS used womanperspective that is called as feminist movie.

Abstract

In consciousness or not, globalization and modernizationhas eroded the local culture. This article discusses the existenceof Lembaga Adat Melayu Jambi (Jambi Malay CustomaryInstitution) in preserving and maintaining the local culture. InJambi, the task was reinforced by Peraturan Daerah (RegionalRegulation) No. 5 of 2007. Therefore, this article also focuses onits effectiveness. As a result, traditional institutions have notimplemented their tasks and functions properly. Actual conditionsrecorded that this institution have no professional andindependent organization systems. They have very limitedfunction, merely ceremonial. This is mainly due to policyimplementation that has not followed the instructions of localregulations and an having adequate budget.

Abstract

This article discusses a classic book titled Minhaj al-Umniyah fi Bayani ‘Aqidah Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamâ‘ah by H. AbdulJalil bin H. Demang. This book was produced in 1346 H/1924 M.Philology is used as the method analysis. This article argues thatsomeone’s belief can be identified by the book she/he wrote. Theanalysis reveals that Minhaj al-Umniyah fi Bayani ‘Aqidah Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamâ‘ah discusses three main issues are: tauhid, fiqh(Islamic law), dan tasawuf (sufism). From the tauhid side, AbdulJalil follows ahl al-sunnah wa al-jama‘ah ideology that wasdeveloped by Abu Hasan Asy’ari, meanwhile, from the way hedescribes, it tends to follow Muhammad Yusuf al-Sanusi orSanusiyah ideology. From the fiqh side, most of Abdul Jalil articlesdeal with daily prays such as Shalat and less about Muslim fasting,zakat (donation), and hajj. While from tasawuf side, Abdul Jalilgives more explanation about its study that is closer tophilosophical tasawuf.

Abstract

Nowadays, many Islamic boarding schools (pesantren)start to involve in practical politics, turn out from their functionas Islamic education institutions. In fact, there are socio andpolitical impacts must be considered logically. This article basedon the research result in an Islamic boarding school in Yogyakarta.Using relevant theoretical frame, observation method, and depthinterview, this article tries to describe findings of politicalinvolvement in politics. Though this kind of practice giveeconomics material income, in the same time, decrease Islamicboarding schools legitimacy and impacts to community resistancetoward Islamic boarding school point of view.
