Abstract

The Pandemic is switching the teaching and learning process, which usually organizes face-to-face into a virtual setting. This condition initiated research to determine how the gadgets influence students' learning motivation and whether gadgets can manage face-to-face or not. The respondents were thirty-six addicted and seventy-four non-addicted gadgets of junior and senior high school students from five districts in North Kalimantan. The data collected was a closed questioner, and an interview was conducted virtually. The results showed that the gadget motivates the students since it enables all the respondents to practically access the material and minimizes respondents' anxiety in expressing the ideas. Discouragingly, the gadget could not take place in the face-to-face learning setting. Non-addicted and most addicted respondents claim that face-to-face learning builds direct interaction between peers and teachers, which cannot be found in online classes. Furthermore, the e-learning class supplies unmanageable assignments with the defective explained material. The class often holds asynchronously and gives fewer responses once the students ask for a detailed explanation. Furthermore, once the synchronous class is hosted, the internet connection distracts the class.

Abstract

As a source of the learning process, a teacher is expected to understand and be aware of the learning style of their students. Every student has a unique learning style. Some students prefer to auditory style, other students prefer to visual style, and another student may prefer the kinesthetic style. These are a few teaching styles, sensing– feeling (people-oriented), sensing–thinking (outcome-oriented), intuitive–feeling (intellectually oriented), and intuitive–thinking (innovation-oriented). This study aims to evaluate the correlation pattern between students’ learning styles and several teaching styles. The sample of this study is 133 senior high school students in Jakarta. The method used in this study is correspondence analysis. The result of this study shows that students with auditory type suit to the intuitive–thinking method and students with visual type suit to sense–the feeling method. Meanwhile, students with kinesthetic type have not suitable for any teaching method if the analysis is conducted by using correspondence analysis. Nevertheless, observation of the mean of the teaching method score has shown that it suits to the intuitive–feeling method

Abstract

Motivation is regarded as one of the major factors in language learning. Therefore, it is very important for teachers to recognize and foster individual students’ motivation as well as identify and respond to their concerns. This systematic literature review study aimed to portray students’ motivational level, orientation, and factors that are dominantly affecting motivation among higher education students in the Southeast Asia context. There are two stages comprised in this study—selecting the pool of review studies and discussing the outcomes of the review. Having thorough sorting and eliminating irrelevant and duplicate articles from three databases (Sciencedirect, ProQuest and ERIC), 15 articles derived from Indonesia, Thailand and East Timor were finally selected. This study, then, found that students’ motivational levels were generally high, and they were more extrinsically than intrinsically motivated, in which most students learn English for their future better job (careers). It was reported that the key factors motivated students in the learning process were friends, and teachers (personality, competence, teaching method), and somehow female students have a different motivational level and orientation from male students. Hence, the English teachers are suggested to reconsider using a method or anything which can improve students’ motivation for both female and male students, both extrinsically and intrinsically. further studies are recommended to include a broader search database and also area part of countries.
