Abstract

This research aims to reveal the depiction of formation of the new identity of immigrant characters in four short stories written by two immigrant authors in contemporary German literature, Wladimir Kaminer and Dilek Güng?r. This study discusses how the immigrant characters build their new identities and their self-subjectivities in four short stories, namely ?Schlechte Vorbilder?, ?Deutsch-russisch Kulturjahr?,  "Geld oder Leben? and ?Blondes Barbie?. This study applies Hall?s (1990) identity theory and Bhabha?s (1994) hybridity theory. This study uses the qualitative approach with the descriptive-analytics method. The result of this study argues that the identity formation of immigrant characters is performed by imitating other cultures and presenting the past memory of the immigrant characters in their present lives as an effort to liberate the immigrant characters from their otherness and to build their self-subjectivities. In addition, the depiction of formation of the immigrant characters? new identities also shows that identity is a fluid concept, and a means of rejection of the two immigrant authors towards the essentialism concept of identity.

Abstract

Abstract: Parikan as oral literature is marginalized from its society in East Java and Central Java because the more rarely of habitat it emerges (ludruk, tayub, etc); the abundance of popular programs in TV electronic media; the vanishing satirical culture; the abolition of prostitution locality; the lesser of the amount of herbs seller in traditional market and vendors on layar tancap; the diminishing of the culture of cangkrukan/jagongan. Fortunately, yet there are two communities keeping on conserve parikan, they are pesantren community, which keeps parikan as the product of primary orality, and Javanese villagers and also Javanese urban community who conserve parikan as the product of secondary orality in electonic media packaging. Among the rest of parikan, there are plesetan parikan, merely for jokes which come from ludruk comedians, and serious parikan, as the official advertising media of public service by police department, politic parties, companies, and mass media, also as the social critique by ludruk comedians towards social injustice and despotism of public officers. Key Words: oral literature; revitalization; secondary orality; social critique; marginalization

Abstract

Abstract

The construction of traditional gender roles has affected the understanding of being feminine and masculine. This understanding seems to influence gender performance in the film Mrs. Doubtfire. This onehourandfiftysevenminute film was directed by Chris Columbus. This study is conducted to examine how gender performativity is illustrated in the film and what ideology lies within the film. Queer theory, especially gender performativity by Judith Butler is used as the framework of the study. The study is done by observing and analysing chosen scenes from the film focusing on the performance of Daniel Hillard as Euphegenia Doubtfire. Narrative aspect of the film is not only the main concern; the nonnarrative is also part of the analysis especially on costume, makeup, performance and color. The main finding of this study is this film in one hand celebrates traditional gender roles but on the other hand promotes gender as performance. Femininity is pictured as fluid. Therefore, it is also a performativity. The contestation between those two opposing ideas is smoothly wrapped through amusing film such as Mrs. Doubtfire. KataKata Kunci: konstruksi gender; performativitas gende; teori queer
