Abstract

As an essential institution to the practice of national payment flow, banks always confront with various risk exposures inherent in them. An interbank interactions through interbank money market might yield higher systemic risks that can lead to a default. This study aims at determining the contagion effects towards Indonesian banks. This study used 18 bank samples who provided annual reports from 2007 to 2016. The measurement of the systemic risks was performed by using financial contagion risk index and was tested using Vector Autoregression method. Results show that there was a one-way causality pattern between banks as the research samples, covering BCA with Bank Mayapada, Bank Maybank, Bank Mega, and Bank Resona Perdania and also Bank CIMB Niaga with BCA, BRI, BNI, BTN, Commonwealth Bank, J-Trust Bank, Bank KEB Hana, Bank Mega, and Bank Permata. Meanwhile, two-way causality occurs between Bank BCA and Bank Mandiri and vice versa. In addition, the impact of the risk pressure of a bank is not always positive, however, it is also negative in some cases, which means that the bank can take advantage of the shocked conditions experienced by other banks

Abstract

Corporate governance refers to policies and mechanisms related to how the company is directed and controlled and looks at the Board of Directors and their characteristics for example. The focus of this study will be to investigate the relationship of corporate governance and financial performance for Islamic Banks. The corporate governance variables and financial data was collected using the Orisis database and looking through annual reports of the banks from 2013 to 2017. The sample comprised 12 listed Islamic banks from different countries and used a panel data approach with a set of 60 firm-year observations. The corporate governance variables selected included, board size, CEO duality, board independence and Shariah Supervisory Board size to test their effect of a firm’s performance measured by ROA and ROE. Other firm level characteristics such as size and age of the banks were included to reduce the amount of external influence throughout the study. Results were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson Correlation Matrix, Generalised Least Squared (GLS) regression and the Random Effect Model. The concluding results proved that there was a positive relationship between some corporate governance variables and a firm’s performance. Board size was reported as the most significant factor which affects financial performance as measured by ROA. However, interestingly CEO duality was also noted to be a significant factor which affected performance. This was seen for both performance measures; ROA and ROE. The remaining independent variables and control variables showed no significant correlation to a firm’s performance and that there must be external factors which explain performance. The results showed that corporate governance was a necessary consideration for improved performance.

Abstract

Abstract

The abundance of water resources avails Indonesia an excellent advantage in terms of the development of the capture and aquaculture fisheries. In recent years, Indonesian fish production has shown an increasing trend. The capture and aquaculture fisheries reached 6.6 million and 16.0 million tonnes respectively in 2016. The growing trend was translated into an average contribution of 2.4 percent towards the national GDP in 2013-2017. However, the absence of forecasting methods and data on fisheries production's potential growth contributes to ineffective policy interventions that require optimum production. Therefore, this study's main objective is to find the most accurate forecasting method for Indonesia's fisheries production. This research utilized the quarterly data of Indonesian fisheries production in 2000-2018 obtained from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. A comparative analysis of the Double Exponential and Seasonal ARIMA (SARIMA) method was undertaken to arrive at the most accurate forecasting method. The study findings broadly revealed that Indonesia's fish production was on an increasing trend, with aquaculture fisheries' contribution outweighing the capture fisheries in recent years. Furthermore, the SARIMA method was found to be the most accurate forecasting method compared to the Double Exponential method. The findings are useful for the government and related stakeholders for enhancing fish productivity in Indonesia. In addition, SARIMA methods could be used to forecast the fish production in upcoming years for better policy, strategy, and decision-making in developing the fisheries sector in Indonesia.
