The purpose of this study to describe (1) the meaning of song dolanan Java, (2) the values of local knowledge (local wisdom) in songs such as forming the national character, and (3) the renewal of the song is in the context of the formation of the nationâs character. Data in this descriptive qualitative study, collected through a literature review, interviews, and observation, from the sources, texts, and events. Data analysis was performed by inductively interactive models. For the meaning of Java dolanan song used method of reading a model consisting of a semiotic reading of the heuristic and hermeneutic (retroactive). The results showed that: (1) Tembang dolanan Java has the meaning that is loaded with moral messages that are important to the formation of national character, (2) The value of local wisdom in dolanan songs like âIlir-Ilirâ, âSluku-Sluku Bathokâ, âJaranan â, and others are noble universal values as in the nine pillars of character, (3) the value of local wisdom in the song is worth direaktualisasikan dolanan Java in order to character formation, which according to the nationâs cultural roots. That is an important issue, because our nation is known for friendly, tolerant, polite and religious as the prototype of the proud nation of East and West are contrasted with the selfish, individualistic, hedonistic, and secular, as if living myth. Noble culture of the nation is now experiencing a shift due to the rise of foreign cultures in a global era life. With the expectation that the investment value of local wisdom through song dolanan renewal to be effective, needs to be implemented through the Java language learning (local charge) at the school from elementary, middle to upper.

The involvement of politeness in directive speech especially at school environment is an interesting phenomenon to be studied. This study aims to assess the perception of politeness in directive speech by students of SMAN 1 Surakarta. This research involves the combination of descriptive quantitative and qualitative method. The data is collected through questionnaires and is analyzed by descriptive statistical techniques. The results show the orders of politeness from the most polite to the least polite as follows: (1) directive speech in the form of advice, (2) directive speech in the forms of question, (3) directive speech in the forms of a strong signal, (4) directive speech in the forms of subtle cues, (5) the form of directive speech in the form of mitigated statements, (6) directive speech in the form of imperative statements, (7) directive speech the form of expression of interest, (8) directive speech with explicit statements, and (9) directive speech with the imperative modes.

The study aims at descibing the relevance of literary works published by newspapers with the basic competence of Bahasa Indonesia subject for junior high school (SMP), and the levels of physchological development of junior high school students. This study involves research and development approach in which the first year project applies desriptive qualitative method. The data take the forms of words, phrases, sentences, and discourse of literary works gathered from two newspapers, Solopos and Kompas issued in January and February 2011. The data is analyzed by critical and comparative methods. The results show that (1) not all literary works found in Solopos and Kompas agree with the basic competence of Bahasa Indonesia subject for junior high school, excepts childrenâs story, poetry, short story, and picture story which comprise 64% of total data. Other works such as novel and poems comprising 36% of the basic competence were not found in the newspapers. (2) Not all literary works published by the two newspapers are appropriate to the psychological development of the students of junior high school. Only 49% of literary works were relevant to both basic competence and psychological development of the students. Nevertheless each newspaper provides different quantity of the relevance; as for Solopos, out of 54 literary works, 37 (69%) were relevant, and for Kompas, out of 131 literary works, only 40 (31%) were applicable.

In Javanese context, refusal tends to threat the feelings and self worth of addressees while in British, refusal is not normally face threatening or at least it is not as face threatening as it is in the Javanese context. This paper compares sequencing of semantic formulae and adjuncts of refusal to invitations phrased by native speakers of British English and Javanese learners of English. The data of refusal are elicited through written discourse completion tasks (DCT) involving nine scenarios. Refusal strategies are classified based on a modified version of refusal taxonomy by Beebe, Takahashi, and Uliss-Weltz (1990). Overall the refusal strategies employed by the two groups are similar. Few differences in sequencing of semantic fomulae and adjuncts of refusal are due to politeness function.

Tulisan ini mengkaji lokalitas dalam konteks keindonesiaan. Kajiandifokuskan pada bagaimana teks syair-syair dalam pertunjukan gandrungmengartikulasikan lokalitas dan keindonesiaan. Tulisan ini menggunakan metodeetnografi. Analisis dilakukan dengan inventarisasi data sampai interpretasi sistembudaya Using. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa makna representasi identitasmelalui teks syair-syair gandrung menjelaskan dua hal. Pertama, adanya wilayahpertarungan yang berlangsung dinamis dan tidak stabil. Dominasi sebagai posisiterpenting akan tidak dikenali ketika penetrasinya semakin meluas dan tekanandari kekuatan yang lain terus meningkat. Kedua, representasi identitasmerupakan wilayah pertarungan pemaknaan yang kemudian menyebabkanidentitas itu sendiri lebih merupakan konstruksi dan politik penciptaan. Sebagaisesuatu yang terbangun, identitas merupakan sesuatu yang diskursif, retak, danberubah-ubah mengikuti perubahan ruang-waktu, baik sebagai bagian lokalitasatau bagian dari keindonesiaan.Kata kunci: lokalitas, pertunjukan gandrung, etnografi

A research entitled âReading al-Mutanabbi> and Its relation to the Three Caliphsof Abbasid: A Semiotic Analysisâ aims to describe semiotically a relation betweenal-Mutanabbi> and the three Caliphs of Abbasid. The relation shows the role andsuccess of al-Mutanabbi>> as an outstanding Arabian poet. The research results inshowing the relation between al-Mutanabbi> and the three caliphs of Abbasid determinedby some factors, namely the character of al-Mutanabbi> , i.e. loyal, stiff,helpful, smart, polite, and arrogant; the characteristics of the poetries, i.e. diplomatic,contradictive, hyperbola, pars pro toto; and the pattern of the relation created,i.e. patronage, friendship, and mutual relation. Although the character is animportant element to maintain the quality of the relation, the special characteristicof the al-Mutanabbi>âs poetries is the most significant element to create the goodrelation with the three caliphs. In addition, the characteristics of al-Mutanabbi> âspoetries are needed by the caliphs to increase their image in front of their publicand enemies.

ENHANCING EFL STUDENTSâ WILLINGNESS TO COMMUNICATE: TEACHERSâ BELIEFS ABOUT THEIR ROLES AND STRATEGIES Sari, Funny Amalia

This study aims to investigate teachersâ beliefs about the scope of theirÂ roles in terms of interaction strategies in order to develop and maintain theirÂ learnersâ willingness to communicate (WTC). Four experienced teachers of twoEnglish courses in Indonesia were asked to answer an open self-completionÂ questionnaire that was designed based on the three interaction strategies proposedby Lee and Ng (2010). The study suggests any pedagogic interventionsÂ always depend on good teaching: one method alone does not promise success.Â This present study is expected to contribute to the comprehension of teachersâÂ influence to learnersâ WTC particularly to language teacher development.

The study described the devotion of Noah Calhoun, the main character in Nicholas Sparksâ The Notebook. It focused on its structural elements and the devotion of Noah to deal with inferiority feeling and compensation, striving for superiority, fictional finalism, style of life, social interest, and creative self that were explored through an individual psychological approach. This research was qualitative research with the primary data source of the novel entitled The Notebook written by Nicholas Sparks in1996. While the secondary data were other related sources. The data were collected through library research. The results showed that based on individual psychology analysis the major character, Noah Calhoun is psychologically affected. Noah fights hard to get his true love and shows her his devotion. He dedicates all of his life for Allie.Â Â Keywords: Devotion, The Notebook, Individual Psychological Approach.Â Â

UTILITAS BAHASA DALAM MENGKONSTRUKSI HEGEMONI KEKUASAAN PADA NOVEL RONGGENG DUKUH PARUK: PERSPEKTIF ANTROPOLOGI LINGUISTIK Sugiarti, Sugiarti

This study aimed at (1) explaining the author hegemonic power expressed in the literary texts by signi er system, (2) explaining the hegemonic power shown in the literary texts as a humanity representation, and (3) nding the basic concept to explain in the language, the system of power and culture in linguistic anthropology perspective. This research used descriptive qualitative method in order to explain that the language utility in linguistic anthropology perspective could formulate and reconstruct hegemonic powers shown in Ahmad Tohariâs novels entitled Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk. The research data included primary and secondary data. The primary data were in the form of literary texts (novels). While secondary data included: (1) various references or journals related to the research problems, (2) a variety of important information obtained from the author, cultural observers and readers are re ered from internet. The data collection was done by library research for in-depth understanding on the meanings. The Data analysis techniques required reading for meaning in a semiotic reading of heuristic and hermeneutic reading. The results showed that (1) hegemonic power shown by the author through signi er system could be considered in the use of signs / symbols that led to the meaning of power in linguistic categories associated with the community culture shown in the texts, (2) the hegemony of power indicated in the texts as humanity representation that sometimes, for certain interests, language could be used as a mean of justi cation to human behavior, (3) the language used in the text could not be separated from the public culture in giving meaning of power. Representation of power was clearly re ected in the use of markers to discuss and interpret the language that referred to the social reality. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan (1) memberikan penjelasan tentang hegemoni kekuasaan yang diungkapkan pengarang dalam teks sastra melalui sistem penanda; (2) memberikan penjelasan tentang hegemoni kekuasaan yang ditunjukkan dalam teks sastra sebagai representasi kondisi kemanusiaan.; (3) menemukan konsep dasar yang dapat memberikan penjelasan tentang bahasa, sistem kekuasaan dan kebudayaan dalam perspektif antropologi linguistik. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualityatif deskriptif sebagai upaya untuk menjelaskan bahwa utilitas bahasa dalam perspektif antropologi linguistik mampu menformulasi dan merekonstruksi hegemoni kekuasaan yang terdapat dalam trilogi novel Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk, karya Ahmad Tohari. Data penelitian ini meliputi data primer dan data sekunder. Data primer berupa teks sastra (novel), sedangkan data sekunder meliputi: (1) berbagai referensi atau jurnal yang relevan dengan permasalahan penelitian; (2) berbagai informasi penting yang diperoleh dari pengarang, budayawan, dan pembaca yang dirujuk dari internet. Pengumpulan dapat dilakukan dengan teknik studi kepustakaan disertai pemahaman arti secara mendalam. Teknik analisis data untuk pemaknaan diperlukan pembacaan secara semiotik yaitu pembacaan heuristik dan pembacaan hermeneutik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) hegemoni kekuasaan yang diungkapkan pengarang melalui sistem penanda dapat diperhatikan dalam penggunaan tanda/simbol yang mengarah pada pemaknaan kekuasaan pada kategori linguistik yang dikaitkan dengan budaya masyarakat dalam teks; (2) hegemoni kekuasaan yang ditunjukkan dalam teks sebagai representasi kemanusiaan diungkapkan bahwa untuk kepentingan-kepentingan tertentu terkadang bahasa merupakan salah satu alat jitu yang digunakan untuk memberikan suatu pembenaran terhadap perilaku manusia; (3) bahasa yang digunakan dalam teks tidak dapat dilepaskan dengan kebudayaan masyarakat dalam memberikan pemaknaan tentang kekuasaan. Representasi kekuasaan tergambar secara jelas dalam membicarakan dan menafsirkan penggunaan penanda bahasa yang mengacu pada realitas sosial. ANOTHER EVIDENCE IN SUPPORT OF THE EARLY INTRODUCTION OF EFL IN INDONESIA Suwartono, Suwartono

The English vocabulary mastery of Junior High School students had been in- fluenced by their previous experience of learning English in Elementary School. The study was aimed to examine the influence of the English learning implementa- tion in Elementary School towards the level of studentsâ English learning achieve- ment in the next stage, Junior High School. For convenience, four Junior High Schools were chosen as sample schools, i..e: SMP Negeri 1, SMP Negeri 8, SMP Al-Irsyad and SMP Susteran in the town of Purwokerto. This type of ex-post facto survey includes 142 students from the first year consisting of 73 students from Elementary Schools which had implemented the English teaching while 69, from schools which had not. To know their achieving of English, the students were given a test on vocabulary which was learned for the first four months. The result showsvalueÂ Â critical valueÂ that using the t-test statistical tool, t-is much greater than t-or 3.0692Â Â Â 1.
