Abstract

The present study is concerned with mixed languages in the speech of a bilin- gual child, in Indonesian and Javanese. It is a cross-sectional study. The data of this study are in the form of sentences containing mixed languages. There are 50 sentences used as the data that are collected through observation and note taking. The collected data are then analyzed using descriptive method. The data analysis has revealed that the child’s speech does contain elements from both languages: Indonesian and Javanese. The language mixing occurs at mostly all linguistic lev- els. The syntax, the morphology, and lexicon are formed or taken from both lan- guages. The analysis also reveals that the child is still at the initial level of a bilin- gual. He has one lexical system with words from both languages. He also uses a mixed syntactical system. Both are evidence that he is a simultaneous bilingual, a bilingual from the start. Such language mixing is so common among normal bilinguals. A child who grows up simultaneously learning two or more languages usually goes through such a phase. This also makes possible that the child has been exposed to a mixed language input. Key Words: Bilingual children, language mixing, mixed languages.

The main focus is to see the factors influencing Bugis practices ofpoliteness such as social status, age, gender, and familiarity. This paper is a part ofmy study on politeness in Bugis society, conducted in 2005 in two different Bugiscommunities in South Sulawesi: the first was in Awangpone, a rural area a fewkilometres north of the regional peninsula of South Sulawesi; the second was inParepare, the second city of the province located on the west coast, about 155 kmnorth of Makassar. The result of the research shows the significant influence ofthose above factors in the practices of Bugis politeness. There is a high tendency toact and speak with a high degree of politeness to signify their high status. However, other factors such as age, gender, and familiarity counteract each other to performhigh level of politeness of Bugis people.Key words: Politeness, Social Status, Age, Gender, Familiarity, Bugis Society

Abstract

This study describes prosodic features which marked the emphatic meaning in Indonesian from Indonesian speaker whose mother tongue is, for instance, Javanese, Sundanese, Betawi, Bataknese, Bugisnese, Minangnese, Ma’anyanese, Balinese, and Mandailing. This study is conducted by applying experimental phonetic approach that is by selecting imperative sentences Tutup pintu! ‘Close the door!’ as a target sentence. The data are collected by asking a subject to commend and to repeat the same command to a child or someone who is of the same age of his child to close the door. All collected data are measured in terms of its frequency, intensity, and duration. Those three features are then analyzed statistically to find out the significance differences of acoustic feature difference on every level of utterance emphaticity. The results of this study shows that frequency, intensity, and duration are significant markers which differentiate emphaticity level. In terms of frequency, the higher the emphaticity level ofthe utterance is, the higher the frequency of the base pitch, final pitch, and pitch range of that utterance will be. From the sound intensity point of view, the emphaticity of utterance is marked by base intensity and intensity range. The utterance with high emphaticity level is marked by high base intensity and wider range intensity. From duration point of view, the utterance emphaticity is marked by the duration of all vowels. The height of emphaticity level is marked by the length of time needed by the vowels to be uttered. The emphaticity markers show meaningful correlation. Keywords: acoustic phonetics; experimental phonetics; speech perception; andprosodie feature

Abstract

Abstract

Pieter Elberveld is a story written based on the historical facts of the revolt of an Indo-German descendant against the Dutch colonial government in Batavia. The revolt got a lot responses from different writers, either local, Dutch, or Chi- nese, including Tio Ie Soei. Giving the focus on the representation, this article at- tempts to give answers, based on the postcolonial perspective, to the following questions: (1) how was the revolt represented by the author, (2) what did political identity the author have, and (3) what were textual and political strategies em- ployed in the story. In order to answer those questions, this article gives the focus on the image of the indigenous people, space structures, and text purposes in the representation framework of the postcolonial study. Key words: representation, Tio Ie Soei, Pieter Elberveld, and pascakolonial

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The study describes subordinators indicating temporal relations of equivalenceand sequence in which their existence in compound-complex sentences are obligatory. The distribution method and its five techniques (Immediate Constituent, deletion, permutation, substitution, and expansion) are used to identify the types anddistribution of the subordinators within the Indonesian sentences. The result showsthat subordinators indicating equivalence of temporal relations are saat, ketika, waktu, sewaktu, kala, tatkala, selama, and selagi. Meanwhile, subordinators indicatingsequence of temporal relations are begitu, usai, sesuai, sesudah, selepas, andsehabis. The distribution of the two kinds of subordinators in the cimpound-complexsentences vary; they can be placed initially, medially after the main clause, and after subject of the main clause.
