Abstract

Children with autism have difficulty in terms of social interaction, communication and language, behaviour, imagination, emotional disturbances, sensory perception and motor aspects. Causes common understanding in children with autism, namely difficulty in brushing teeth. More than 60% of parents reported that their children with autism could not brush their teeth. They only brushed their teeth once per day. Another study revealed that 57% of autistic children did not want to put a toothbrush in their mouth, 37% of children were afraid to brush their teeth, and 55% of children did not like the taste or texture of toothpaste. Nearly 47% of children with autism do not understand the importance of brushing their teeth, and half of these children cannot stay still while brushing their teeth. Yay's Dental Education model is an alternative to developing a dental and oral health education model that can be used at home by involving the role of parents. The educational model consists of the Tell-Show-Feel-Do (TSFD) method, Visual Pedagogy, PECS media and Positive Reinforcement (PR). The method in this research is Research and Development with a Quasy Experiment model with a control group pre and post-test design). Based on the results of statistical tests, stated that this model was effective in increasing the mother's knowledge (p = 0.004), attitudes (p = 0.000) and actions (p = 0.001) about maintaining oral health in children with autism. Mothers' knowledge, attitudes and actions can change habits to apply excellent and correct tooth brushing techniques in children. Guidance and mentoring of mothers to maintain dental and oral hygiene are necessary so that children can get used to brushing their teeth and keep healthy teeth and mouth independently.

Abstract

Children with special needs have limited intelligence and motor skills that cause a lack of dental and oral health maintenance. Children with special needs are at risk of developing dental and oral diseases. Therefore, it is very necessary to assist parents in maintaining the dental and oral health of children with special needs. Assistance for parents of children with special needs has been carried out 4 times in a period of 2 years on an ongoing basis. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the length and quality of maternal assistance on behavioral changes and the debris index of children with special needs in Meteseh. This type of research is pre-experimental with a pretest and posttest one group design. The sample in this study were 30 parents and children with special needs. Data analysis used univariate and bivariate analysis, Wilcoxon test to determine differences in knowledge and attitudes of crew members and debris index before and after treatment. The Mann-Whitney Test was used to determine differences in the knowledge and attitudes of parents of children with disabilities to changes in debris index of children with disabilities. The results obtained indicate an increase in the knowledge and attitudes of children with disabilities Sparents. The debris index of children with disabilities Shas decreased but is still not enough to change the children with disabilities 's actions in maintaining dental and oral health into a good category. Assistance to parents of children with special needs needs to be carried out further and children with special needs still need more parental participation to achieve good dental and oral health measures.

Abstract

ABSTRACTSalele Timor Leste people have long known betel leaf, betel nut, and lime as ingredients for betel or toothbrush. The behavior of brushing teeth with betel nut peel is one way to take care of teeth which was believed by the ancestors. There are positive and negative effects on dental health. From a positive point of view, it inhibits the process of caries formation, while the negative effects of brushing teeth with betel nut peel on the teeth and gums can cause discoloration of the teeth (stain), periodontal disease on the oral mucosa, lesions on the oral mucosa, poor oral hygiene,  atrophy of the tongue mucosa and can cause abrasion. This research is an analytic observational study with a cross-sectional approach. The sample size used is 25 respondents with purposive sampling technique. The data were analyzed by univariate analysis (frequency distribution) and bivariate analysis (rank Spearman correlation test) to determine the relationship between the traditional habit of brushing teeth with betel nut peel on the incidence of abrasion. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between the tradition of brushing teeth with betel nut peel on the incidence of tooth abrasion. The frequency of brushing your teeth with betel nut peel more than twice a day can have bad effects on oral and dental health.

Abstract

Caries is a dental and oral disease with the highest percentage. One of the groups that are susceptible to caries is children. Caries is a dental and oral disease that has several causative factors, including the acid-base state of the oral cavity and also the status of oral hygiene. Prevention of caries can be done by controlling the pH of saliva by gargling a solution of raisins containing flavonoids, tannins, and triterpenoids which can control salivary pH. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between gargling 60% raisin solution on salivary pH in children aged 13-16 years. This type of research is analytic research, namely true experimental research. The sample consisted of 32 children, consisting of the intervention group (gargling with 60% raisin solution) and the control group (gargling with distilled water). Data analysis was performed using a dummy independent variable linear regression test. The results of statistical tests showed that there was a relationship between gargling 60% raisin solution on the pH of saliva with a unidirectional relationship and the strength of the relationship was sufficient with the R coefficient value of salivary pH = 0.384. Further research is needed on the effect or relationship of raisin varieties or other types on salivary pH with different target characteristics, as well as the manufacture of mouthwash preparations made from raisins.
