Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out deeply the aspects of   equal gender on English textbooks for Senior High School by Indonesian and English writer in Serang City. The method used in this research is qualitative research with content analysis technique.The data collected through document review. The research finding shows that the perecentage of men are higher than women in the aspects of main character and historical event, the use of equal language, public and domestic role, and art talent, sport, and  intellectual competence on the books of indonesia writer in four language skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing.This description shows that women are inferior because of culture, misinterpretation of religion, and patriarchy system factor. Whreas the perecentage of men and women are gender equal on the book of English writer, especially in the main character, the  language equal, the public and  domestic role, and the art talent, but the sport and intelectual competence showed that the perencentage of men are high. It means that women have opportunity as men and especially domestic role is responsibility of both men and women. It can be concluded that the Englsh textbook is written by Indonesian that called curriculum 2013 can not be used as English lesson, whereas the English textbook of English writer can recommend as English lesson because it found the equal gender.

Abstract

Literature module in this research is regional literature module which is developed based on the previous module in teaching and learning Indonesia The aim of this research is to produce a model of module for Indonesia based on the thematic approach from folklore for the third grade students of elementary school in Lubuklinggau, In this research, further development was done based on teacher and students’ need analysis. Research and Development (R&D) method is used in this research. This research combined research model of Brog& Gall and development model of Dick & Carey. Therefore, research and development is a process of developing and validating educational product. Educational product in this research refers to the syllabus, module, and lesson plan/instructional design. Based on the data gathered from the application of developmental plan of learning model which consist of syllabus, lesson plan, limited try out test, large try out test, model effectiveness test, and module readability test, it can be stated that the teaching and learning model which is developed can increase the third grade students’ achievement at elementary school in Indonesian teaching and learning with the source of regional literature.

Abstract

Translation can play a role in the development of communicative abilities since speakers are often engaged in the work of sharing and negotiating meaning. It fosters speculation and discussion, apart from developing abilities considered fundamental for communication, such as interpretation, negotiation, and expression of meaning. However, there are views against translation in the ESL classrooms even though the method has been applied in the pedagogical process. As a result, ESL students who are weak in English are not given the opportunity to excel in the second language from their own bilingual strength. This paper attempts to study and disclose in what ways pedagogogical translation in rural ESL classrooms in Sabah is reflected into practice, thereby assessing whether the gap between pedagogical translation and translation pedagogy has beeen been bridged. In this case study, five primary teachers were selected and their knowledge and practice of translation were assessed through qualitative content analysis in pre- teaching, while teaching and post-teaching activities. A translation framework has been designed and used in assessing the teachers’ performances in using translation. This pilot study reveals that teachers have translated from the first language (L1) into the second language (L2) as a means to help students to understand the content of the English lesson. They did not have adequate knowedge on translation strategies. Thus, the designed translation framework may be used by teachers as a guide in using translation in the ESL context.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to understand comprehensively about implementation of direct and indirect speech act in Mata Najwa talk shows on Metro TV. It was a qualitative research with content analysis method. The data were collected through indirect participant using observation and some document study were video recordings of audio-visual from www.matanajwa.com pages. It was started of January 2014 to March 2014. The analysis and interpretation of data, indicated that direct speech act mode was more dominant than indirect speech act. Direct speech act was conducted through speech of interrogative, declarative, and imperative. Indirect speech act was conducted through speech of declarative and interrogative for imperative mode.

Abstract

"Bula Malino" (Quiet Moon) is a literary work found in Buton society and packaged in the form of poem. The manuscript is written in Wolio Language (Butonese main native language) using an Arabic-Wolio script modification, commonly called "buri Wolio" (Wolio writing). This article is yielded to report findings of a qualitative study which analyzes the humanity messages revealed in the poem using a content analysis and structuralism genetic approach. This approach follows some gradual procedures such as examining intrinsic elements of poem, reviewing social life of author, and giving a reflection to history and social background of Buton society. The findings show that the poem reveals messages and values for humanity in terms of sobriety or calm mind/heart and soul clarity for being prepared for death. The poem also contains advice addressed to readers. It was noted that the author of the poem was born in the late 18th century AD. At the age of 40, he was inaugurated the 29th sultan of Buton. At this century, Buton social condition was more than enthusiastic in learning science. This was marked by the establishment of a school named "Zaawiah".

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the effect of learning technique and Locus of Control on students competence in translating from German Text into Indonesian. The research was conducted at the fourth semester on German Study Program in the academic years 2013/2014. It was an eksprimental study with 2 x 2 factorial design. The sample was 40 students. It was divided into two groups, each group experiment consisting of 20 students where 10 students had Internal Locus of Control and 10 others had external Locus of Control. The data was collected by using two kinds of test : Locus of Control test and test of translating from German Text into Indonesian. ANAVA and Tukey test were used to analyse the data. The results of this research concludes that generally Jigsaw learning technique was more effective than STAD learning technique, that is : 18,65 > 17,35. The result of this research also conclude that, the students who have internal Locus of Control when following lectures with STAD learning technique is higher ( 20,2 ) than Jigsaw learning technique ( 17,1 ). On the contrary students with external Locus of Control showing that Jigsaw learning technique (20,2) is better than STAD learning technique ( 14,5 ).The finding that Jigsaw and STAD learning technique can be used in teaching translation, however in choosing the teaching technique students’ Locus of Control should be considered.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discover the values of education in the novels "Series of Anak-anak Mamak" by Tere Liye. The novels are more appropriately analyzed by using structural semiotic studies because the sentences used in the author of four novels consist of language styles and idioms. "Series of Anak-anak Mamak" also contain quite a lot of educational values. This study used a qualitative approach with content analysis method. The focus of the research is: the value of education in terms of structural and semiotic theories contained in the novels "Series of Anak-anak Mamak". The finding of this study is a description of the values of education in the novels entitled "Eliana", "Pukat", "Burlian" and "Amelia" by using a semiotic approach. The whole chapters in the four novels contain the values of education when viewed from the structural theory. Total percentage of the values of education contained in the four novels are: (1) honesty amounted to 18.33%, (2) fidelity amounted to 12.50%, (3) tolerance amounted to 8.33%, (4) confidence amounted to 47.50%, and (5) affection amounted to 13.33%. Semiotic studies in this novel are based on the styles of language and idioms, included connotative meanings. The whole chapters in the novel contain the values of education from the semiotic standpoint. Total percentage of the values of education from the semiotic standpoint of the four novels are: styles of language amounted to 57.25% and idioms amounted to 42.75%.

Abstract

Research on the study of the use of greeting in Banjarese which stay in Kapuas District of Central Borneo.This Research focused to describe the greeting word used by the people, particularly the greeting word in Banjarese used by the first generetion in Kapuas. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. Data collection by observation with a look at, involved notes. Sources of research data used is the preference of all speech that is displayed by 1) Aged over 30 years, 2) Native language studied. 3) Knowing its own culture, 4) The Banjarese are the first generation derived from Banjarmasin, 5) The Banjarese who had lived in Kapuas. Based on this research shows 1) Greetings kinship to greet our parents (father + mother) → (+ Uma Abah); Greetings kinship parents to greet our father and mother (grandfather + grandmother) → (kai + nini); Greetings kinship to greet parents our grandparents are corrected; Greetings kinship to greet both parents protested was waring; Greetings kinship to say hello (brother + sister) → (kaka + ading). Greetings kinship to say hello if our children have children (grandchildren) → (grandchildren); Greetings kinship to say hello if we have children and grandchildren is a great-grandfather. And 2) The system of daily greeting, to call people who may be called ikam lifetime, lives. I use the word, unda to appoint themselves. As for honor or call older used the word pian, and said ulun to appoint its own self.

Abstract

English classrooms process of teaching and learning is an important aspect of successful English teaching and learning. The analysis of classroom discourse is a very important form which the classroom process research has taken place. The present study focuses on SMA (high school) English classroom discourse. The microethnography of Spradley was the research method deployed. Through a detailed description and analysis of the collected data referring to Sinclair and Coulthard’s classroom discourse analysis model, the problem of patterns of the classroom discourse is made clear. On the basis of the discourse patterns problem found, a few strategies for high school English teachers are put forward through the teacher training in order to improve English teaching and learning at high school in Indonesia. The research results showed that teacher talk highly dominated the English classroom discourse; 94% of teacher-students talk. IRF Model of Sinclair and Coulthard was not found in the English classroom (only IF pattern) and no lesson achieved.

Abstract

When students begin their undergraduate studies, they will need to adjust to the demands of the undergraduate studies with regard to academic English at university level. Dudley-Evans & St. John (1998, p.37) maintain that “their English tuition up to the tertiary level will generally have been in the area of General English, and is unlikely to have included specific preparation for study at university level…” Barker (2000, p.8), in his study on first year students’ perception of writing difficulties, found that the students “come to realise during first semester that they are not adequately prepared for the writing demands required at university”. Pecorari (as cited in Phakiti & Li, 2011) found that Asian ESL students had problems in academic writing; “the students begin their aca-demic writing from ‘copying’ which implies a lack of training in academic writing and arouses accusations of plagiarism in their writing” (p.232). Being an English-medium public university in Malaysia, MARA University of Technology (UiTM) poses challenges to both its students and instructors, as a good command of English is essential. In its attempt to equip its undergraduate students with language skills, UiTM has introduced credit-bearing English courses. This paper presents the findings from a research project to identify the academic writing needs of first-year Diploma in Public Administration students in UiTM Sabah. A total of 110 Diploma in Public Administration students and six instructors responded to the questionnaires. The research examined the students’ and instructors’ perceptions of the importance of academic writing skills the students need in order to complete their undergraduate programmes, assessment of the students’ academic writing skills, and the difficulty of academic writing skills. The findings indicated that there was consistency of response between the students and instructors. The follow-up interviews and focus groups with instructors and students confirmed this. The findings from the needs analysis are then used as the basis for developing academic writing materials to complement the existing English courses in UiTM.
