Abstract

The study of gender is essential to the study of language. It is quite clear that male and female characters are different in many aspects. They not only different in their physical aspect but also in using a language. This research aimed to uncover the differences of a linguistic feature in the speech of male and female characters based on woman’s language theory revealed by Robin Tolmach Lakoff, linguistic features which are dominantly used by male and female characters and its implication in teaching speaking. Lakoff is a linguist who began the research of the feature of woman’s language. The data of this research were taken from conversations of male and female main characters in Pride and Prejudice novel by Jane Austen. Data collection technique used was documentation which was applied two steps they are reading the novel thoroughly and enlisting all speeches uttered by the main characters of the novel. The instrument of this research was Documentation Guideline. The researcher analyzed the data by using analysis technique according to Mile and Huberman, namely data reduction, data display, and verification. This research revealed that male and female character differs in their number of using of linguistic features. Female characters are stated use more lexical hedge, avoidance of strong swear word, rising intonation on declarative, empty adjective, intensifier, emphatic stress and super polite form than male do. Female characters use those features to show their uncertainty toward things; they tend to avoid strong swear word and use more superpolite form. Therefore, female expressions are considered more polite than male. Consequently, they can avoid friction in their conversation and build effective communication across gender. This result is in line with Lakoff theory. The researcher found that the feature which is dominantly used by male and female is an intensifier. Furthermore, the implication of this research in teaching speaking especially complimenting and interrupting expression as the functional expression is the student needs to exposed expressions of complimenting and interrupting appropriately.

Abstract

The opportunity to learn English should be given to all learners since English has been widely spread globally. Learners should be exposed to English as early as possible and be prevalent for all, including disabled students. Students who need special treatment in learning should also get equal opportunity to study, especially English. One type of disabled students who need special attention in English learning is those who have autism. Autistic students are in need of special treatment learning English since they have more difficulties in perceiving and producing language code. Therefore, English teachers should have awareness of the characteristics of autistic students concerning speech difficulties. It is highly necessary for autistic students to have intensive therapy and in other sides, they also have a right to learn foreign languages like English. Speech therapy as one of the therapies used to assist the autistic students in producing language codes is potentially in line with English learning. In this case, speech therapy can be done while teaching English to autistic students because speech therapy often requires graded language teaching.    This study focuses on how speech therapy is integrated with English teaching for autistic students in Second Grader of Junior High School students to improve their English proficiency and speech competence as well. The study is an ongoing classroom action research conducted in SMP Sunan Muria in Kudus Regence, Central Java, Indonesia.

Abstract

The term hybrid learning was used to describe online learning combined with face-to-face interaction in the classroom. There are two research questions the first question is how the development of hybrid learning in http://daviqr.com/ is. The second one is how the moodle-based hybrid learning of http://daviqr.com/ as a teaching model in the subject of teaching listening and speaking to the students of English Department of IAIN Walisongo Semarang in the academic year of 2013/2014 is. This research is a research and development, which has the population of all fourth semester English department students of the Faculty of Teachers' Training and Education, IAIN Walisongo Semarang that takes the subject of Teaching Listening and Speaking in the academic year 2013/2014, which consists of three classes. The number of population is 120 students. Regarding the research findings that there are some main reasons why most students agree that the hybrid learning course is an exciting course and why they prefer the hybrid online course or the combination between online and traditional classroom. First, the course outline and objectives were made clear. Second, they learned a lot from this hybrid course. Third, the reading materials were clear and informative. Fourth, the level of this hybrid course is just right. Fifth, the total study load of this hybrid course is in proportion to the number of semester credits is just right. Sixth, the amount of their interaction with other students is a little better. Seventh, the quality of their interaction with other students is a little better. Eighth, the amount of their interaction with the instructor is a little better. Ninth, the quality of their interaction with the instructor is a little better and about the same. Tenth, compared to a face-to-face (traditional) class of equal credits, the workload of this online course is somewhat more. There are some recommendations I should give. First, UIN Walisongo Semarang must design e-learning for lecturers as many students like hybrid courses. Second, the faculty must improve the quality of Wi-Fi hotspots.
