Abstract

Tirtomulyo Village is located in the sub-district of Kretek, at the southern tip of Bantul District. Agricultural potential in this village is still widely open including their processed products, considering the productive lands are suitable for any kind of crops, i.e. corn. Corn is one of the most planted crops in this village. For extra earning, corns are also used as raw materials in processed corn products, i.e. corn chips. Corn chips industry in this village is quite well developed but the lack of packaging and labelling make this agroindustry a little hampered in its marketing. The method used in this research is to mentoring and educating the coummunity especially the agroindustry persons about the marketing strategy, particularly the packaging and labelling. Results from this service, the community succeed to make branding, labelling, and registration in the Department of Health and the Department of Industry, Trade and Cooperatives at Bantul District as a household industry based on processed agricultural products. By labelling the  products and has been registered at the relevant institutions, it is expected that the corn chips agroindustry is being stimulated and developed in a much broader scale.

Abstract

First year of three year plan of Community Empowerment Program through Student Community Services (SCS) of Gadjah Mada University was conducted in Pinogu Subdistrict, Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Province in 2013. Pinogu is located on top of hill and reserved as the National Park of Bogani Nani Wartabone and this protects some endangered species, such as Tarsiers and Megapodon birds. As the most remote area, Pinogu had not been touched equally by the central government, therefore it was less developed. Pinogu had been popular with coffee plantations since Dutch colonial periods. This plantations was now too old and became forest. This SCS Program was designed to empowered local people for agribusiness including rejuvenate coffee plantation and coffee production and to educate local people to be aware of local biodiversity and understand how to conserve the most endangered species, Tarsiers and Maleo. Twenty one of UGM students from different study programs had been coached and trained priorly by Field Instructure within 3 months with the SCS-thematic programs and leadership; then they were mobilized to Pinogu and stayed for 2 months conducting the program. Two main programs out of 7 SCS thematic programs were successfully conducted during SCS activity in Pinogu, Bone Bolango Regency. Coffee agribusiness programs from up stream to down stream processes were trained to local community who interested in coffee production twice a week by students and biodiversity conservation was tought to junior high school students. These SCS program achievements were including establishment of anursary, improvement of local people skills in manage coffee plantation, selection of mature seed, seed drying, and good coffee processing, and also establishment of a coffee producing community. Conservation education on local endemic and endangered species—Megapodon birds (M. Maleo) and Tarsiers (T. Spectrum)—to junior high school students was attracting some students who were really interested in learning more about fauna conservation and improve student awareness on endemic and endangered species as the main icon for foreign tourists who visited Bone Bolango. The success of the SCS-UGM programs were contributed by sinergy of university and the local government financial support and students and field instructure commitment.

Abstract

The role of technology is very important in supporting improvement of agricultural production. The high-tech strategic role was demonstrated by the success in achieving increased production of rice within the last 35 years is the contribution of the application of more advanced technology. Mosher et al. (2003) put technology as an essential condition for agricultural development. If there is no change in the technological development of agriculture was halted. Production halted the increase, it may even decline because of declining fertility tannic or because of damage increased by pest play an increasingly rampant. A view to changing the technology, can be interpreted as an adaptive technology on the condition of the biophysical and social environment of the local culture. Practical application of specific technologies by farmers, for example how farmers adjust to the conditions of cultivation of local agro-ecosystem forming a specific production system on irrigated land, rainfed lowland, upland, swampy areas, and tidal. Choice according to agro-ecosystem farmers are adapting cultivation is calibration-specific technologies. It’s caused each commodity grows well on climatic conditions, soil and culture-specific social support. Community service activities has been implementing the specific technology that is enriched with appropriate technology research team of the Faculty of Agriculture of UGM by utilizing site-specific conditions of Ponggok Hamlet, Trimulyo, Jetis, Bantul, which have ingredients that can be used for making fertilizer and also wisdom locations in rice cultivation which has been done by farmers for generations. Community Service Team of Faculty of Agriculture, UGM during 2013-2015 had engaged in community service based on the results of research and appropriate technologies in Ponggok Hamlet, for 2 seasons seen significant progress and participation of farmers. In 2013 the results of the demonstration plot tile average of 6.8 tons/ha, after continuous mentoring and counseling in 2014 the results of tile becomes 7.8 to 9.8 tons/ha. Activities application of appropriate technology in a farmer’s land is not easy. Although guidance and counseling has been done before, but not all farmers want and dare to carry out all of the technology that is recommended because it is still in doubt, especially with regard to plant spacing, seed age and the number of seedlings planted. In 2015, a technology package has been introduced covering healthy seedlings, planting system “footprint tiger”, “tajarwo”, homemade compost with waste around the site and biological fertilizers. The results of the application of specific technologies in the growing season of April to July 2015 showed an increase in rice production, but the farmer as a principal factor remains the key to successful application of the technology.

Abstract

Fermented complete feed (CF) based forage-fodder and agricultural by product as feed for ruminants can be implemented in the household and industrial purpose. Complete feed technology is one of alternative to solve the problems of stock and quality of feed. The nutritional value can be set by determine the number and type of mixture, livestock will not has an opportunity to choose so that it can minimize residual feed, practical, and can be stored for long periods. Fermented complete feed very much match to be implemented in the dry season or in the emergency situation. During Merapi Volcano eruption in 2010 was one of moment which is need CF technology. Rice straw can used for CF that can be socked during dry season, also the quality might improve (from 3—4% of crude protein content became 7—8%) with addition of rice brand or other ingredients. Fermented complete feed based on rice straw, forage-fodder or agricultural by product has a multifungtion in the emergency situation, reduce disaster risk, and feed security conservation.

Abstract

The State of Republic of Indonesia is an archipelagic Country which has 17,508 islands (large and small), and has a very long perimeter border adjacently to neighboring countries, either in the land and sea. One of Municipality which is directly adjacent to the mainland of other countries is Merauke at Papua province. As a border region, Merauke has several functions, namely legal functions, control functions, and fiscal functions. At that time, these three functions are not going well in Merauke, even face many obstacles andto be an isolated regions. Some problems occurred in Merauke, among others: (1) has abundant natural resources (wet tropical forests, mineral wealth of gold, and abundant water resources), but has poor public accessibility; (2) socio-economic conditions are still low, particularly in accessing the basic needs (education, health); (3) unstable security of peoples; and (4) development policy (local, regional, national) were not in favor of local communities. This article is a summary of the several previous activities has be done, i.e. action research and the implementation of the KKN PPM UGM programs. The method used in these activities are observation and field surveys, focus group discussions, and the implementation of the KKN. Based on the several activities as mention before, the results that have been carried out are the general profile of border region and the typology of border region problems. To overcome these problems, it may take a very serious political will from the central and local governments, due torealized Merauke not just a backyard of the Indoensian Country.
