Abstract

This paper deals with the feminism voices as reflected in selected poems of Audre Lorde. In this study, the researcher used the descriptive analysis with a lens of black feminist concept. The main focus of this study is the study of women oppression due to the power patriarchy in society and domestic area. This study will be materilized with the selection of Audre Lorde’s poems such  as A Woman Speaker (1968), For Each Of You (1968), Now (1968), Love Poem (1973), Coal (1976), The Black Unicorn (1978), Who Said It Was Simple (1978), and Power (1982). The result of analysis showed that Audre Lorde challenged patrirchal oppression and supports his women to define their status and freedom under determination of male.  Keywords: Audre Lorde’s poems, feminism, black feminism, women   oppression.

Abstract

Imperative sentence is sentence that used to express command, request, direction, and prohibition. Imperative sentence often be seen on many media, one of them is guidance for using on medicine product. Guidance for using medicine product is a horde of sentence that used to give guidance to the consumer in order to decrease the misuse of the medicine product. The existence of the guidance to use of medicine product is being the source of this analysis is supposed to bring us the classification of guidance of medicine product those are divided by several kinds of them, imperative as a command, request, direction, and also imperative sentence that used to give prohibition. The process of classifying of this analysis is helped by the descriptive qualitative method in order to make the analysis to be sharp enough and easy to get the aim of this analysis that will peel off the purpose of imperative sentence on medicine product by classifying on what type they are mostly formed consisted. After having analysis over the entire related source in the imperative sentence, the researcher found that there is a tendency at almost of the sources is included to imperative sentence as a direction with totally amount 20 cases, 15 cases are included to imperative sentence as direction, then 4 cases of imperative sentence as prohibition, the last is 1 case of imperative sentence as command. As said by Swan that the meaning of direction is guidance or guideline, the instruction to do something, Imperative sentence as direction is used to give some guidance to someone else to do or to use some product in right way. Abstract

Literature has close relationship with human’s life. It could not separate with society as the writer is member of society. It represents the life and life itself is social fact. Feminism theory has purpose to know the nature of inequality and focus on power, gender politics and sexuality. While generally feminist theory also concern to analyze women’s right, interest and issues. The themes usually explored in feminism such as oppression, patriarchy, discrimination, etc. One of that is libertarian radical feminism that related to patriarchy is characterised by power and propose detrimental for men to exhibit only masculine traits and women to exhibit only feminine traits. The aimed of this study are to know Rie’s life toward tradition with domination of man power and to find out libertarian radical feminism characteristics that possessed by Rie in the scent of sake novel. From the finding of the writer found about Rie’s life as the main character in The Scent of Sake novel, she occurs many oppression from patriarchy which domination of men and women become passive just take care to her husband, house and children. She must receive her parents decision to marring with man who didn’t love her, she is sacrifice herself to get heir from that man consider to business family. Then she still survive with the act of her husband and the last she knows that her husband has been cheat to geishas and has babies whereas she can’t has it too. Because of that, her libertarian radical feminism characteristics rise up. It also caused by her parents died and make her aware that she must take control in her family, she can’t depend her life to her husband that waste much money to geisha. She changes become independent and androgynious women by her education. However, Sake business and the other business that her family become more successful in Rie’s leadership. Abstract

This study investigated the transition signals appeared in education articles of Edarticle and short stories of O.Henry. The objectives of the study were to find out the types of transition signals, the frequency of each transition type, the diffrences  of those that were used in education articles of edarticle and short stories of O.Henry. The population of this study are two articles and two short stories and all of them were selected as the sample. The data were collected by using primary data, the secondary data, and data analyzing technique is descriptive qualitative. The data were gathered by identifying the transition signals which inherent with Oshima and Hogue’s theories. The data were classified into three classification following theory; in which transition signals classified into connectors, coordinators, and subordinator. The result of this study show coordinators frequently used (93 items in articles and 132 items in short stories), the second was subordinators (35 items in articles and 38 items in short stories), and last was connectors ( 28 items in articles and 18 items in short stories).  A suggestion was transition signals in any kind of hand writing (fiction or non fiction) can help reader to understand and to follow what writer’s thought. Abstract

This study aimed to investigate: (1) Indonesian vowel pronunciation difficulties faced by Thai speakers, (2) Indonesian consonant pronunciation difficulties faced by Thai speakers, and (3) Causes of Indonesian pronunciation difficulties faced by Thai speakers. This study used a descriptive method. The data were taken  from recorded Indonesian pronunciation by four Thai exchange students at the University of Bengkulu. The data were analyzed through the transcription of the recorded pronunciation in the form of International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), the data were reduced to pronunciation difficulties by Thai speakers by drawing a conclusion and verification of data. The results of this study revealed that: (1) Thai speakers found it difficult in pronouncing some Indonesian vowel sounds (such as /a/, /u/, /e/, and /ǝ/) and diphthongs (/au/ and /oi/), (2) Thai speakers found it difficult in pronouncing some consonant sounds (such as /g/, /v/, /ŋ/, /r/, and /ñj/) and clusters (double and triple consonants), (3) The difficulties in pronouncing Indonesian vowel and consonant are likely to occur due to the language transfer (interference), simplification, reduction, over generalization, and addition. These are developmental errors which may reduce as they study Indonesian further by practicing intensively and interacting with the native speakers of Indonesia. Keywords: Pronunciation,  foreign speakers, language transfer, interference, simplification, reduction, overgeneralization, addition, developmental errors.

Abstract

Stream of consciousness is one of ways that is used by the narrator or the author of some literary works in directing the story. Atonement is one of great literary work that is created by Ian Mc’ Ewan in 2001. In this novel shown that the stream of consciousness technique is used as the tool in presenting the story. This way is important to make the story to be understandable for the readers especially for novels and short story. Such confusing thing when we are reading some literary works without having understanding about what we read. By using descriptive qualitative method, the researcher tried to find the kind of stream of consciousness that is used by the author in presenting the story of the novel. Classifying the quotation of the story of related novel is one of many ways that is chosen by the researcher in helping the analysis of this research to determine what kind of stream of consciousness technique that is commonly used in the story of Ian Mc’ Ewan’s Atonement. After having analysis over all of the related source in the story, the researcher found that there is a tendency of the author of Atonement in using the stream of consciousness technique in presenting the story. The used technique of stream of consciousness is included to the indirect interior monologue. As said by Bickerton (78), indirect interior monologue the type of interior monologue in which an omniscient author presents unspoken material as if it were directly from the consciousness of a character and, with commentary and description, guides the reader through it. It means that, the intervention of the author of Atonement is highly abided in the story line of the novel. Keywords: Stream of Consciousness, Atonement, Indirect Interior Monologue.

Abstract

This research titled is “The Study of Speech Act on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Novel Titled Anne of Green Gables”. The purpose of this research is to analyze speech acts and meaning based on Austin terms that found on dialogue on novel story line. Research method is research library and supported by all information on internet. Speech act is a symptom of communication process and according to Austin divided into three categories, locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary. The type of speech act that the most used in Anne of Green Gables novel is illocutionary of order. Abstract

The research entitled is The Struggle of Scarlet O’hara to Find Pure Love in Margaret Mitchel Gone With The Wind (1936). The aim of the study is exploring  the most dominat of Scarlet O’hara needs appering Gone With The Wind (1936) and to know the struggles of Scarlet O’hara in finding her needs in Gone With The Wind (1936). This research applied qualitative method. In this research the writer will describe the collected-data. The writer explore the protagonist character in the novel and use the concept of Abraham Maslow’s five basic hierarchy of needs especially focused on the struggle for love, affection and belongingness also self actualization needs. Based on the analysis, the researcher finds that Scarlet O’hara struggles to love, affection, belongingness and self actualization because she needs a man to be love, family’s affection and get many friends. The finding research can be stated that the most dominant of Scarlet O’hara needs  appering   Gone With The Wind (1936) is the needs of love, affection, and belongingness to make her life full of joy and happiness. Keywords : Struggle, Love, Affection, Belongingness

Abstract

This paper explored various forms of address in Bengkulu which may help in understanding the culture of the people and also in knowing the reason why the people behave the way they do in an encounter with others in different situations. The address terms examined in this paper are limited to names only. Pronouns and other forms were not included. The study entails an approach namely collection of data by means of questionnaire and introspection by native speakers from within their own circle of friends and relations in both nuclear and extended family. Twenty participants assisted in collecting the various forms of Bengkulu address terms from their friends and relations by means of audio-recording and notes of peoples address behavior. The findings showed that the titles vary from those derived from kinship terms, chieftaincy, age, and social as well as distance of the people. Address forms such as last name is rarely used. Indeed, first names are often used when addressing a person who is junior or to show intimacy among them. At last, this study also found that the address term teknonym appears to be a infrequently feature of address in Malay Bengkulu. Keywords: Address forms, culture, titles, first name, last name.

Abstract

The purpose of this analysis is to find out about how the influence of the Id, Ego and Super Ego of the teenage characters in the novel and to know that there is a kind of juvenile delinquency in the novel The Casual Vacancy (2012) Sigmund Freud. Theory about the condition of the human psyche is one theory which is often used, this theory helps in analyzing the psychological condition of a person in the face of the challenges of life in adolescents. By using qualitative descriptive methods the authors tried to explore any form of juvenile delinquency by Fagan (2006). Then the writers also delve more deeply about the psychological impact of juvenile delinquency by Sigmund Freuds theory that the id, ego and super ego. After analyzing the data, which in getting various quotations within the novel, the writers ultimately conclude that the dominant juvenile delinquency, are the use of cigarettes and drugs. Adolescent mental condition is always influenced by the presence of the id, ego and super-ego as it had been by Sigmund Freud describe through the theory of psychoanalysis. Juvenile delinquency largely influenced by his ego. It can be seen from the surrounding adolescent measures contained in the novel The Casual Vacancy (2012).
