Abstract

The Little Women by Louisa May Alcott is a fictional novel, the setting during the civil war period in America in the 19th century. This novel tells the story of the March family who face so many challenges in their life. This study aims to analyze the March family members’ characters and find out how the women in March family were struggling to solve the difficulties in their life using the liberal feminism theory, which prioritizes women's freedom in achieving their rights. Following the theory, the women characters in this novel were classified into two themes. The first theme is leadership which including being a leader and being an influential figure. The second theme is independence, which is also divided into being independent thinkers and independent to support themselves and family. Abstract

This study aimed to describe the defamiliarization in Paulo Coelho’s novel entitled “The Alchemist”. Lack of textual study and formalism use was become the common problem why this thesis were made. Formalism believe that meaning itself contained in form of text. Therefore, the author of this research take “A Defamiliarization of the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho” as the title. The purpose of this study were: (1) to know the use of defamiliarization, (2) to understand the meaning of defamiliarization in this novel. A qualitative descriptive method was adopted to conduct this study. Several data that has been gathered were archived. Using domain to recognize the data classify, then taxonomy to find the most frequent data and componential were used to make the conclusion. After separating and classify the word, the author uses Viktor defamiliarization to find the strange and interpret the meaning. Defamiliarization was used in Coelho’s novel and meaning that separated into two forms, connotative and denotative. As the conclusion, the researcher found that defamiliarization used to deceive the reader and perceive the reader from the common words or sentence or meaning. The most frequent data of the defamiliarization was strange and the most frequent meaning used were connotative. Keywords: Defamiliarization, Formalism, Meaning, Text, the Alchemist.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the types and the most dominant of interpersonal metadiscourse markers in speeches of the minister for foreign affairs of Indonesia. This research was designed by using descriptive qualitative method. The object of this research was 10 speech scripts of the minister for foreign affairs of Indonesia. The instrument in this research was a table checklist of the types of interpersonal metadiscourse markers based on Hyland theory 2005. The results of this research showed that all of types of interpersonal metadiscourse markers emerged in speeches of the minister for foreign affairs of Indonesia. Those types consisted of hedges (probably, possibility, possible, uncertain), boosters (of course, beyond, certainly, clearly, believe, indeed), attitude Markers (honored, biggest, important, agreed, interest), self-mentions (I, Me, My, We) and engagement markers (you, let, recall, question, thank you). Meanwhile the most dominant type of Interpersonal metadiscourse markers is self-mention. It is proven by the emergence of 137 self-mention in speeches of the minister for foreign affairs and particularly the use of first-person pronoun assisted the speaker to find accessible way for audiences to comprehend the context. Abstract

Lack of understanding of people about the analysis of poetry and considered analysis is a difficult thing. Researcher focus on three poems, love, and question; Fire and ice, and stopping word ins Snowy Evening. This poem is chosen because his poetry work and is Bild by various figurative language than any other poetry. In addition, the poem also give advice on responsibility and respect. They are four research questions in this study to discuss:1) the types of figurative language used in the chosen point 2) the meaning of the select poem. 3) the theme of poetry 4) the message that can be draw from the poem. The domina figures of speech used in Robert Frost’s poem is selected? To conduct this research, researcher used the theory of Roland Bathes and Julia Kristeva with a structural approach that analysis figurative language in Robert Frost poem. 1) the research finds the figurative language used in the select Robert Frost form; such as symbol, parallelism, climax, personification, metaphor, repetition, inversion, and hyperbole. In addition, researchers also found the dominant figurative language. The dominant figurative language the Robert Frost uses in poetry is a symbol. 2) the meaning contained in the poetry of Robert Esek Hs a certain meaning and purpose to be conveyed to the reader according to what is going on at that time. 3) Robert Frost’s poetries is Frost who stands at the intersection of 19th century American poetry and modernism. 4) Robert Frost’s poetries message to be conveyed in the form of how our attitude chooses the way of life.

Abstract

This study examined about metaphor and simile translation strategies in “The Jungle Book" novel. The objective of the study are: (1) To find out the metaphor and simile in “The Jungle Book” Novel (2) To know the translation strategies used by the translator in translating. The method of this study is descriptive qualitative. It is concerned with the description of the data in the form of conversation and naration. In analyzed the data, the writer used technique developed by Spradley and Newmark theories. The result of study indicate that most dominanat is found more than simile in “The Jungle Book” novel. While the translation strategies used by the translator in translatig in “The Jungle Book” novel are most dominant metaphor namely reproducing the same metaphorical image in the targer language and simile found is Literal translation (retention of the same vehicle/image). Abstract

LGBT is a group of people who has sexual disorder compared to common people. LGBT normally living like usual people, they have community and interact like normal people. But in term of sexuality, they have different view. Like other community, Most of LGBT are hiding their sexual disorder and want a freedom to express their presence. This thesis focusses on defense mechanism on main character in the novel. The novel which is used is in this research is Simon vs The Homo Sapiens agenda written by Becky Arbertalli. The Main character is Simon who hides his identity as a gay and he is being threatened by his friend because his friend knows his secret. This research purpose is how Simon defense himself and what of reaction and impact of his counter measures. This research also focusses on what kind of defense mechanism which is used and what is the impact of defense mechanism. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. Data are collected by reading the novel and collecting any expression which showing the main character conducting defense mechanism. The theory which is used is from Anna Freud about Defense Mechanism. Data are analyzed by using Spradley’s analyzing theory. This research is analyzed by using Spradley’s. the result of this research shows that there are 25 defense mechanism in the novel which divided into 7 Denial, 6 fantasy, 5 Displacement, 3 projection, 3 reaction formula and 1 compensation. The impact of defense mechanism on character mostly are negatives, it means that the main character doesn’t really express his feeling. Keywords: Defense mechanism, LGBT, psychoanalysis

Abstract

This thesis focusses on the translation comparison between amateur translator with machine translator in translating swear words in Big Stan movie. The movie contains a lot of swearing because it describes about prison’s life and the prisoners and also politics in the prison. Most swearing contains racist swearing and also sexual contains. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. Data are collected by watching and taking a note. Data are analyzed by using Spradley (2007) analysis. According to data and analysis, there are 40 swearing in the movie. The translation technique which used by amateur are different, amateur translator mostly uses adaptation translation technique (35%) while machine mostly uses literal translation technique (53%). The raters also rate the translator accuracy for amateur translation (68% and 73%). It means that amateur translator has moderate accuracy. Abstract

This study aims to describe the hoax statements from 2019 Indonesia‟s presidentialcandidate in debate using propositional meaning. The purpose of this study were : 1) Toinvestigate the statements which have indication of hoax. 2) To describe propositionalmeaning behind the statements by presidential candidate in debate. 3) To find out theinfluential factors that make hoax spread. The data were collected through the conversationfrom the 2019 Indonesia‟s presidential candidate debate and analyzed using domain andtaxonomy analysis. The researcher findings showed that 1) There are seven indicated hoaxstatements (9,8%) 2) There are 97,26% statements which have propositional meaning. 3) Themost frequently factor that make hoax spread is factor A (social identity).Keywords: Propositional Meaning, Statements, Presidential Candidates

Abstract

Humans need a language to communicate to each other, whether it is in spoken or written language. Human beings can better interact with each other and in compliance with social norms with an awareness of sociolinguistics. The researchers of this study concentrated on sociolinguistics in this review, especially pragmatics, which includes social deixis. This research aimed to investigate the role and the function of social deixis in “The Dressmaker” movie. This study is a qualitative descriptive study by collecting data from the conversations in “The Dressmaker” movie. The data were analyzed based on Levinson's theory of the type of social deixis and Hollinghead’s theory of the function of social deixis. Furthermore, the data were also analyzed by using Spradley's theory. There were three steps taken in using this theory, namely domain analysis, taxonomic analysis and component analysis. After analyzing, the reseachers found 2 types of social deixis in the movie "The Dressmaker". Types of deixis found are 1) relational social deixis (97.26%) and 2) absolute social deixis (2.74%). It is also found 3 functions of social deixis in the movie, namely 1) kinship markers (95.37%), 2) indicates social status (3.79%), 3) implies empathy (0.84%). The types and social functions of deixis found in the movie describe the relationships and characters of the characters when interacting and socializing. Hopefully the results of this research will enrich the science of English literature, especially pragmatics about social deixis

Abstract

This thesis concerns the analysis of Protagonist Analysis of The Birthmark. The research question of this thesis was how the protagonist of the Birthmark short story by Nathaniel Hawthrone is. The design of the research was a descriptive design. A short story titled “The Birthmark,” written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1843. The plot centres around a prominent birthmark. Aylmer, the main character, is an intelligent, retired scientist whose passion of science is only rivaled by his love for Georgiana, his stunningly gorgeous new wife. Aylmer becomes preoccupied with a crimson, hand-shaped mark on his bride's left cheek shortly after the two marry, a mark Georgiana had deemed a "charm" prior to Aylmer's mention. With each passing day of her husband's devotion, Georgiana's perception of her mark becomes more disgusting. Aylmer is convinced that he can free his wife from this mark, her one imperfection, and he spends the entire novel looking for a way to do so.
