Abstract

This study aims to observe the development of translation studies through three concepts of descriptive translation studies; product-based, processbased, and functional-based translation studies. The readers are introduced to some famous translation scholars including their view of translation studies. At the further discussions, this study lets the readers acknowledge the main issues on translation studies, focusing on the debate of equivalence versus variations in intertextual texts analysis. Some tendencies of variations, such as different grammar and sentence structure, diglossia leakage, and pragmatic consideration are also presented to present to what extent variations occur during investigation processes. Therefore, regarding those tendencies, this study is closed by the description of Matthiessen's proposals about points of consideration to construct a parameter to measure meaning variations. This study may help those who are interested to conduct translation researches and help them by giving options of which theories is beneficial to their analysis.Key words: translation studies, variations, intertextual texts analysis

Abstract

Communication by using spoken language cannot be separated from human's daily life. Every day, a person uses various utterances or illocutionary acts- part of speech acts, in order to communicate what he/she has in his/her thought to others. One may use the speech act to give a compliment, make a request, refuse an invitation, ask for an apology, etc. The knowledge required by an addresser (speaker) to perform illocutionary acts constitutes part of his/her communicative competence. An appropriate illocutionary act will be delivered if the addresser has a good communicative competence of his/ her language. Thus, in discourse studies of a language, it is important to set up units of analysis called speech act sets (Olshtain and Cohen, 1983). In this paper, the speech act set that will be discussed is the speech act set for apology. The community involved in this research is Chinese generation in Pondok Village, Padang, West Sumatera. The research is done in situ – the actual place where one can see people realistically in the language being studied. The aims of the research are to describe and analyze speech act set for apology as demonstrated by Chinese generation in Pondok Village, Padang, West Sumatera. Keywords: speech act set, apology, Chinese generation, Pondok Village, Padang, West Sumatera

Abstract

Teaching and learning languages involve more than targeting grammatical and lexical knowledge. To achieve communicative competence in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context, EFL learners need to develop their pragmatic competence which is better taught explicitly in the classroom. This essay argues that while the implicit instruction is reasonably applicable, the explicit pragmatic instruction is more effective to facilitate EFL learners in developing their pragmatic competence.

Abstract

This article describes and explains how literary competence for the teaching of literature in English as a foreign language (EFL) context can be achieved by taking Culler's (1997) poetics in the study of literature as a theoretical framework. The implementation of this approach is discussed by using one of the famous drama scripts in American literature: Death of Salesman written by Arthur Miller. Following Culler's poetics approach, the analysis focuses on one of the themes found in the drama script: the disappointments faced by Willy Loman (the main character) which make up most of the plot with a dramatic ending: Willy's decision to suicide. This article aims to encourage EFL teachers who use literature as the object of study to take Culler's side by using poetics as the starting point in a literature study in order to improve the learners' literary competence.Key words: literary competence, poetic approach, teaching literature in EFL context, the study of a drama script, Death of a Salesman

Abstract

Pragmatics is considered to be the component of language which is hard to teach for beginner learners of English. Highlighting the argument on the model of language competence proposed by Bachman's (1990), this paper discusses how the definition of pragmatic competence in the field of TESOL should include illocutionary competence in Bachman's model. Taking the stance on functional grammar's perspective, a brief analysis is presented how explicit pragmatic instruction can improve second language learner's ideational metafunction of the target language. Keywords: explicit pragmatic instruction, ideational metafunction, functional grammar

Abstract

This paper discusses a black woman character named Nancy in Faulkner's “That Evening Sun” who experiences trauma as the accumulation of her constant fear. The analysis is conducted by using Fanon's theory of psychological trauma in colonial society. The researcher used descriptivequalitative method as it is a qualitative research in which data are nonnumeric. The analysis examines Nancy's unconsciousness resulted in a trauma. It also highlights Faulkner's technique to compare fear experienced by Blacks and Whites. Based on the analysis, Nancy's fear is sourced from her husband's harsh treatments because she is pregnant with a white man's child. Her husband's violent treatments are the manifestation of his disappointment and anger towards his racist surroundings. Nancy's acute fear is worsened by her surroundings' treatment that mostly consist of white Southerners and are apathetic towards her fear. The crippling fear accumulates into trauma. Faulkner's method to contrast the fear experienced by Whites and Blacks are effective to show that the level of fear felt by Blacks is greater than that of Whites.

Abstract

When Martin Luther King, Jr. mentioned that “We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character that is the goal of true education”, he must have completely understood that education is never enough without educating the students' characters. Nowadays, characterbuilding-based curriculum has been promoted throughout the country to educate students' character building. It also soon becomes the government's concern and urgency to teach character building to students of any level as it is mentioned in the Decree of National Education Ministry number 045/U/2002. However, there are some problematic matters in designing its teaching materials whether it is between didactic and non-didactic or implied and vice versa method of teaching. To propose a prospective solution of teaching character building to students; therefore, this paper aims to probe and to share a case study from the readers of O. Henry's After Twenty Years who happen to be the students of Book Report class at English Language and Literature Department of Jenderal Soedirman University in Purwokerto Central Java. The short story is given to the students as the teaching material to seek the most efficient way of teaching them character building as it is reflected within the short story. Given the short story, read it, responded and finally answered the questionnaire, those students are able to identify the character building embedded in that particular literary work and to learn them from the story. Besides, derived from the students' questionnaire, it can be concluded that students can educate themselves the character building through the story by mentioning those learned characters, and they also can show their selfreflection after learning it. In conclusion, there is possibility of using literature as prospective teaching material in educating students' character building by analyzing the qualities embedded in the literature e.g. novels, short stories and poems, and doing this is also a way of empowering literature for a greater life benefit.Keyword: Character building, Teaching material, and Literature empowerment

The work further posits that the white America's popular and mass culture has ingrained and legitimately shaped the way Afro-American see and value their own culture and self identity, and that its spread and control is both political and materialistic. This paper is seek to put forward that Willis' idea can be visibly viewed through and associated with Gramsci's theory of hegemony in understanding the underlying agenda advocated by the more superior group (white) towards their subordinate counterparts (Afro-American).Key words: white mass culture, afro-American, hegemony

Abstract

This paper aims to show the use of deconstruction theory by Jacques Derrida to offer other possible meanings in a short story entitled “The Lame Shall Enter First” by Flannery O'Connor. The researcher shows the flaw in the binary oppositions constructed by the text and reveals the failure of the logical arguments of the oppositions by redefining qualities of the opposite characters in the story, Sheppard, Norton, and Rufus. The researcher used descriptive-qualitative method as it is a qualitative research of which the data are nonnumeric. The researcher finds three binary oppositions that become the center of the story. The first pair of binary opposition is religion and logic. The second are selfishness and compassion, and the third is ignorance and sympathy. The oppositions are represented by characters Sheppard, Rufus, and Norton. By closely reading the text and attacking the basic premises of the text, the researcher finds that the binary oppositions no longer serve as the foundation of the story since the story proves that all those binary oppositions eventually show otherwise. Keywords: deconstruction, binary opposition, character
