Abstract

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) image building can be represented through many ways, one of them reflected on his international speeches. On this way, argumentation phases in the speeches can form social construct, self image, public opinion, new meaning and world-view. Based on critical linguistic point of view, word choice, sentence arrangement, and sentence pattern on speeches show a language expertise. This research aims at describing grammar used of SBY international speeches related with self image building. This research uses critical linguistics approach proposed by Fowler (1979) via Young and Harrison (2004: 3) which focuses on two metafunctions of Systemic Functional Linguistics Halliday, ideational and textual function. The source of data are nine texts of SBY's international speech in the year of 2011 chosen based on some criteria; updated topics, variation of topics, and abundant data. Then, data are chosen, noted, and identified based on formulation of the problems. On data analysis, Norman Fairclough framework applied in analyzing the data. Based on limitation of Halliday's metafunction, only were two levels chosen; textual analysis and social practice analysis. Besides, relevant studies were done to get detail and complete explanation. Based on data analysis, the result that can be emphasized is the grammar seen from word choice, clause and sentence element, figures of speech, pattern of clause change are means to convey new meaning based on who is the speaker and psychological effect shown to listeners. Thus, it can reveal the speaker purpose extensively and help to describe argumentative phase on speeches. Those three results of research are efforts to build SBY self image on language expertise. On this way, SBY can attract sympathy, therefore international cooperation can run smoothly.

Abstract

Listening is one of the four skills that have an important role in mastering the target language, especially in the university level. This skill is very useful to help college students to do some academic activities that involve attending lectures or speeches, presenting materials or finding some resources to do their assignments. However, listening skill cannot be developed well due to some problems. Based on a research, listening problems include lack of vocabulary mastery, less understanding grammatical forms, e.g: speakers' utterances, unclear pronunciation and speed of speech, unclear contents of the passages, and physical setting including uncomfortable class; and lack of facility and background noise. The data is proven by the achievement of listening test that indicates that students who have listening problems tends to have low achievement in the class. To overcome this problem, lectures have to design specific instructional design to solve the listening problems. This paper will discuss more about listening problems and the appropriate learning strategies to solve the problems.Key words: instructional design, listening skills, college students

In previous research, this product had been validated by media and content expert and had been used to teach reading comprehension in English proficiency class. The result of the research, conducted in 2012, showed that the usage of product in learning English was good to improve students' achievement in learning. Therefore, some possible solutions are also presented in this paper in order to make the best use of its potentials while focusing every effort to minimize its harms.

It was also to find out the involvement of die subjective motive die readers possessed toward the production of their individual responses and the communal interpretations. The findings show that the readers produced individual responses along with the symbolization of their subjective motive, in terms of the personal experience of affair case in the marriage life, the personal belief about that affair and love, and the reading experience. In those individual responses, it was found both the identical and the various individual responses formed by the readers. The production of this identical  response involved the identical symbolization of the readers' subjective motive. The readers also had gone through the communal discussion and they approved two communal interpretations. Firstly, Angela's affair was common due to her unhappy marriage life condition. The reason was because the readers had experiences affair case similar to Angela's affair and her unhappy marriage life. This similar condition between Angela's affair and readers' personal experience influenced the readers to accept that as the communal interpretation. Secondly, the direct and indirect personal experience of affair case could cause a different position in responding to Angela's affair. It was because the distance the readers had. Another point was revealed that the readers had involved their subjective motive as the symbolization consciously.

Abstract

To comprehend that a language belongs to a dialect, one may examine its lexicon. As it is considered non-standard dialect, the American African English lexicon is assumed to have its own characteristic different from the standard American English. Therefore, to gain a better comprehension of the American African English dialect in the view point of lexicon features, the paper will elaborate Georgia Doyle Johnson's Frederick Douglas And Loraine Hansberry's A Raisin In The Sun. This paper is descriptive linguistics rather than a stylistic study as it does not focus on literary style. The data taken was classified into linguistic elements and was tested to the theories of informal English in general; African American English in particular and Standard American English rules of pronunciation. The research findings were summarized and discussed to conclude the research. The result of the research demonstrates that African American English, a variant of informal English, is different from the rules of Standard American English. In terms of lexicon, African American English employs local and rude words. The presence of slang and colloquialisms, taboo words and swearing make it distinctively informal.
